  1. A restaurant whose ambience is suited for a city that purports to be a world capital. Big and beautiful so that the noise seems appropriate and justifiable. Expensive but everyone seems happy to pay. The clientele may be mainly lobbyists, government staffers and paid interns but you can easily imagine that they have glamorous jobs. The drinks are delicious, the food is good, the service is friendly and attentive. Go here to impress out of town relatives, and bring along friends from Paris or New York without apology.
  2. Read the Post article on living the Portlandia lifestyle, so we went to brunch at "Tasty n Sons" on N. Williams Avenue. Short wait amongst the tatooed, then courteously seated. We split a chocolate potato doughnut with creme anglaise ($1.50), the vegetable frittata ($9) with peas, caramelized onions, mint and feta, and the Morrocan chicken hash with potato, harissa sauce, asparagus, broccolini, cauliflower, red pepper, olives, and over-easy egg ($12). Excellent.
  3. Stopped in at the Laurelhurst Market on East Burnside one afternoon before Thanksgiving after reading Sietsema's Post review. It's a bar and butcher shop with tables. People were lined up to place their orders. We just tried two half sandwiches [$4 each]: rillette on baguette and porchetta on ciabatta. That was fun to write. Excellent.
  4. Went to Ted's Bulletin for the first time last night. We had reservations and I was quickly seated even though my companion had not yet arrived and the place was full. The waiter was pleasant and professional. I had a half-rack of ribs for $17.99. They were extensive, meaty and flavorful. The sides, coleslaw and mashed potatoes and gravy, were adequate. My $10.29 cocktail (name forgotten and drinks are not listed on the website) indicated that it was made with Laphroig scotch. It tasted like it. I probably won't order it again. The room is handsome but very noisy. Why must so many nice restaurants be so noisy? Is it because design trumps comfort? Ted's has high tin ceilings and hardwood floors. Or is it because successful busy restaurants have determined through market research that most diners enjoy hubbub? Or is it because successful busy restaurants have determined through market research that most diners will vacate their places after a certain period of time because they can no longer stand the noise?
  5. Hi, I'm Bob and I eat food. I went to a very good Filipino restaurant in Gaithersburg this month. It's called "Lumpia, Pansit, atbp" which basically means "Eggrolls, Noodles, etc" in Tagalog. It's in a mall that's kind of hard to find 213 Muddy Branch Road. Phone 301/527-7788 when you get lost. The food is very fresh, the setting is pleasant, the owner is eager to please. I also ate at Ray's the Classics, which, of course, was excellent. My mother, identified in another person's blog as the inhabitant of Salveworld, pronounced the crab imperial "excellent," and she is hard to please. OK, am I supposed to "Upload" now?
