  1. I know the market in Eden Center carries them frozen. FWIT, they don't stink when frozen (but I didn't lean in to get a whiff).
  2. That is one of very few things Andrew could not stomach. I also recall he barely touched the really stinky tofu in Taiwan.
  3. That was poorly worded. Invitee was the wrong word, I meant attendees. This was meant for a small group and we have reached capacity based on those who first expressed interest.
  4. I'm gonna sound like a douchebag but this event is no longer open. All invitees will receive a confirmation pm from me a week before the event. With sufficient interest, I think DR himself may lead one of these jaunts or he knows of others who would. My personal goal is to eat like it's a Bizarre Food episode and drink like it's No Reservation (which may not be your cup o' tea).
  5. Don't they eat durians too?
  6. Ordered half spicy and half mild yesterday for take-out. While waiting, I enjoyed a nice cold Miller Lite and ate some Japanese rice cracker snacks. The chicken took 15 to 20 minutes to cook. The spicy chicken was indeed very spicy - spicier than any dish I've ever had at Hong Kong Palace. We liked the chicken but it wasn't something earhshattering. Will have to try Bon Chon still. I went to the branch in Centreville as I was golfing next door at Twin Lakes. I didn't realize how many Korean restaurants are in that shopping center. I will drag a Korean friend along next time and see if any of those restaurants serves something special.
  7. I think I'll bring a big bread knife and a cutting board so we can split things up. As for places to eat, I'm okay with sitting on the curb if it need be. The tofu tasting sounds good. I think the idea is to wonder around and we'll get whatever looks interesting to anyone in the group.
  8. 11 out 16 savory dishes were available on the regular menu. I just don't think a whole lot of thought went into planning these 20 bites. I suppose if you want to sample most of Poste's menu in one fell swoop, then this is for you. $75 is a great price for the quality and variety of food. I think it's actually 12 out of 16. The salmon tartare is not on their online menu but it was served so frequently it probably was a special that night. I think the flavor of the tartare was spot on. I didn't bother eating the creme fraiche on the bottom though. I also left out a pic of the seared salmon with brussels sprouts (very nice fish). If you order a la carte, I would highly recommend the salmon or the halibut.
  9. Grilled Capretto Medjool Dates Strawberry Rhubard Pudding (not pictured) Warm Chocolate Bread Pudding (not pictured) Petit Fours I believe the meal took about 3 hours and there were no dilly dallying on our part.
  10. Fried Clam Chickpea Crusted Halibut Blood Orange Granite Vodka shot (not pictured...I really didn't need a shot of vodka) Crispy Pig Trotter topped with Quail Egg Veal Schnitzel I had to drive home. I started with a beer and then had 2 glasses of pinot noir. The Saturnes with the foie gras was appreciated but I really didn't need a shot of vodka in the middle of the meal (would've preferred another glass of wine). So let that be a warning to other diners.
  11. 20 Bites - no molecular gastronomy going on here at all. The focus is on fresh vegetables. Hot & Cold Oysters Pickled Veggies Pea Soup with Fried Burrata Herb Salad with Carrot Soup
  12. Actually, there are candid employees and owners who would tell you some things in the store in fact sucks. Same thing happens in restaurants - some servers will tell you not to order certain things. I see it on Kitchen Nightmare - chefs will say that everything they serve is good - well, that's just blatantly not true.
  13. That's what I'm tryiing to ascertain given these facts, i.e., what is reasonable and would not ruin someone else's good time. There are two different issues. One is talking too loudly at a restaurant - the response to that should be a polite request to lower the volume. I'm only concerned about the other issue - one's gratuitous opinion about someone else's conversation. Is it reasonable to offer your opinion about their topic of conversation? What does that accomplish anyway? Telling others their conversation is revolting is likely to impinge on their ability to have a good time, no?
  14. So you don't mind if I tell you that your conversations are stupid if I were to overhear it? That if one overhears a conversation, one ought to interject their own personal opinion? P.S. Please don't get offended personally. I'm not saying you're stupid or your conversations are stupid. I'm just using an extreme example.
  15. So it's okay to tell someone you think their topic of conversation is revolting? What if I think someone's topic of conversation is stupid? Also, the poster never explained why the other person is loud, perhaps because the restaurant is loud and one must be loud to be heard?
  16. Great! I think we got: Sthitch Kmango KtMoomau and her man Merry Marry Me What if we meet at the Seaside Crab House...we can get a beer (or a pitcher) and some spicy softshell crabs (or whatever V.H. recommends) at a not so seedy looking place to start the tour! I'd like to do some bahn mi tastings, and whatever else you guys are interested in.
  17. I didn't know there are verboten topics at dinner. I don't think I would appreciate someone telling me what I can or cannot discuss at dinner. Telling someone they're too loud is one thing, but telling them that their discussion is revolting?
  18. Thanks for stepping up. What's your availability the next couple of weekends? Kate: what works for you?
  19. Maybe we can find a place that serves cats or squeezel. BTW, I loved the episode of No Reservation where he goes up to the Central Highlands of Vietnam (except the part where he eats what appears to be a large cockroach).
  20. I've read others extol the virtues of the hawker's menu at the Dupont location (mostly on CH) and I've heard it sucks. Does anyone have an updated report?
  21. Actually, maybe mid-afternoon is more conducive to imbibing adult beverages.
  22. I've wandered thru Eden Center on my own. There are pickles and condiments in the market that I know nothing about. There are gelatinous rice treats that I dare not try. There are take-out places with lots of great smelling food that I would like better explained. I'd like a better understanding of Vietnamese food and I think Eden Center is a good place to start. I'll pay $50 per hour for a guide. I only expect 2 hrs of work at most and I'll even buy drinks at one of those bars that's cranking out music at 10 a.m. on a Sunday morning. Incidentally, I think I'd like to take this tour either Sat or Sunday morning. Looking for a guide as well as anyone else who wants to explore and help defray the cost (I can pay for the guide but you can help chip in on the food and drinks).
  23. The Serbian Crown has this on its menu: Nevertheless, I've never been there while they had the lion meat (I've only been 3 times, in the last 7 years). ETA - I see KMango has already posted.
