  1. What do you think about the author's criteria for selecting the best Chinese restaurant (outside of China/Taiwan/Hong Kong)? I believe she selected a restaurant in Vancouver as the best because despite it being upscale it was able to draw in Chinese clientele. I think if you can induce the generally frugal Chinese expats to eat high priced fancy Chinese, then you've done something right. On a tangent, I looked at Zentan's menu and I have no desire to eat there.
  2. I didn't know that so I looked it up and found this: We probably weren't going to Borgata on account of the parking fee, now that does it. I like Danny well enough as a contestant but I don't want to eat his food.
  3. Went by Sakulthai for lunch today. Ordered 3 dishes (similar to the ones I had a Nava Thai and Thai Square). Started with the Floating Market Noodle Soup. This version was a little sour, a little sweet, chock full of sliced beef, meatballs and noodles but not the least bit spicy. Luckily they give you condiments to heat things up yourself. The other two dishes were sauteed Chinese broccoli with salted fish, and breaded fried catfish in a spicy coconut curry sauce with basil. The sauteed Chinese broccoli was crunchy, flavorful (with oyster sauce) but a little on the salty side. The catfish was fantastic - could use a little more fish though. Better flavor than Thai Square but fewer selection of dishes.
  4. Finally booked our trip to Atlantic City. Haven't been in years. Do casinos (especially Showboat where we're staying and Borgata where we want to check out) have free parking? Any opinion on Stephen Kalt and his Fornelletto in Borgata?
  5. I thought Carman did. Shallal wants to cater to middle-aged black women and don't think they eat pork. Newsome thought middle-aged black women love pork. I'm with Newsome on this one. There's plenty of pork in soul food. Disclaimer: I'm not a middle aged black woman but I did spend the night at Holiday Inn Express.
  6. Maybe the ribs weren't marinated....wasn't sure since we were stuffed silly eating the sirloin and filet. We were also tossing back beers playing golf.
  7. Afterwards, would you like to help become a part of McLean history by cleaning my garage? (just kidding)
  8. Went to Han Gang this afternoon with a Korean friend. He ordered assorted BBQ meat that turned out to be a piece of sirloin, a piece of filet mignon, and some ribs. He says he's never seen it at a Korean restaurant. The steaks were cooked whole to medium rare and then cut up with scissors. The ribs were marinated but the sirloin and filet were not but they were really tender. With two beers and nothing else, the tab was $73.50 (tax but without tip).
  9. Stopped by 2 Amys last night around 8 on the way to a party. The restaurant was packed so we did not bother stopping. At 9:45, on our way home, the restaurant did have a few tables open so we finally got a taste of 2 Amys. We ordered 3 pizzas - margherita, vongole, and the calzone-like Ripieno Extra. They served sparking wine but in a normal water glass. The pizzas were terrific. Nothing gloppy about them but I'm still not sure if they really needed the last second drizzle of olive oil. Loved the thin, chewy, and well seasoned crust. Loved the fresh basil on the margherita pie. The best pizza I've had in DC (much better than Pizza Paradiso or Bebo, but we haven't been to many of the highly touted pizza joints such as Comet or Pete's).
  10. Easiest thing to do is just walk it. It's not that far from Foggy Bottom to G'town, may 10-15 minutes walking.
  11. Funny how everyone went latin - taco, menudo, quesadilla, and tripleta. With beef heart, I thought of anticuchos. Tongue - tacos. Tripe - stew. I couldn't think of a good pig ear street food dish. I've had plenty of pig ears but none are really street food. Ludo got hosed.
  12. Anyone had the omakase here recently? Has the omakase here changed at all? My last time here was probably in 2005 or 2006, with a 7 course omakase where you pick one main course (between fish, chicken, and beef, IIRC).
  13. I had a salad for lunch yesterday and still managed to gain 1 pound from eating basically just protein (okay, there were 3 kirin drafts too).
  14. The omakase here is nirvana (or as close to nirvana as you're going to get in DC) for raw fish lovers. For your choice of sashimi and sushi, they had 6 trays of fresh seafood to choose from, each tray bearing 3 to 4 types of fish. Naturally we said we want to try them all, other than 1 tray which had salmon roe, sea urchin, steamed baby clams and boiled octopus leg (had them all before). Other dishes included your choice of fried fish (we chose a small Japanese rockfish which is edible in its entirety after the chef cleaned out the innards), your choice of grilled fish (some other kind of Japanese fish - presumably flown in from Japan), your choice of soup (snapping turtle for us), a steamed prawn topped with sea urchin. The order of the courses were - 4 appetizers (sea urchin served on top of tofu, small marinated mackerels, a small piece of grilled fish with bok choy, abalone with steamed vegetables), sashimi, fried fish, grilled fish, soup, steamed prawn, and then sushi. Not every course was delicious but enough to vault this place to the top on the Japanese restaurant foodchain. Maybe Makoto will respond by changing their omakase?
  15. What is wrong with Teddy? Multiple personality disorder? Now I have no desire to eat at Granville Moore's knowing that he's a pyscho.
  16. I will take recs for restaurants in DC or NOVA that does good fried clams (other than Black Salt).
  17. A dungeness crab here cost $44 (big live one right out of the tank), but it's so delicious stir-fried with ginger and scallions. The last time I ordered a whole crab was at Mark's Duck House, maybe last year or two years ago, and it was $30. I don't know if crab prices have gone up or Miu Kee is just more expensive. Most families I saw last night were chowing down on lobsters, which is cheap in comparison ($21, IIRC). The place was packed from 7-8, mostly with Asians (more Vietnamese than Chinese). Ema, is Miu Kee better than Canton Cafe and Sampan?
  18. Why are you ordering sushi at Woo Lae Oak? What do you mean by 3 or 4 quality notches below Passionfish on the sushi? Please elaborate. What did your companion order (soup of tofu, chicken and shrimp, is it spicy, does it come with noodles, what is it)?
  19. The hostess looks like a raccoon with a jutting chin.
  20. We can do this at Hong Kong Palace or China Star. Just pick a date!
  21. Never even heard of Barker Black. I've heard of Psycho Bunny... http://www.psycho-bunny.com/servlet/StoreFront
  22. That's because you have to, otherwise your wife will kick your ass
  23. When the restaurant has a dress code and you don't follow it, as Mrs. B points out above, that is disrespecting others. So you talk out of both sides of your mouth?
