  1. I thought that it was interesting that a month or so ago they moved emeril live from its 8pm time slot to the 7pm and were running repeats of Alton Brown during the 8-9pm time slot...guess now we know why!
  2. Yes the general consensus here is that Banana Cafe on Captiol Hill is crap...so why start a thread you ask, because there is new found proof that even crappy restaurants can produce a good dish and I have found that dish at Banana Cafe: The plantain quesadilla! The tortilla was perfectly golden brown and crisp, the plantains meltingly soft and delicious...a light smear of sour cream set it all off. Conversely the stuffed yuca with chorizo, carrots and olives off the "tapas" menu was a disgusting mess.
  3. btw, it appears Cafe 8 Mediterranean Eatery has indeed opened, I saw some people eating lunch there on Sunday. Menu was posted outside, lots of apps with a Middle Eastern bent as well as a selection of pizzas, all appeared to be priced reasonably. I swung by later to try them for dinner but they had closed by that hour...it was rather late.
  4. Noticed a sign recently for a new store called Hill's Kitchen, everything for the cook, "opening soon" on Capitol Hill next to the Kinko's located at the Eastern Market metro plaza. Anyone have any other info?
  5. Just got back from lunch at Restaurant K...overall good first impression. The decor and layout is on the corporate cookie cutter side, but there is a nice bar space with plenty of seating. The menu is friendly for having a reasonable lunch at a fair price. I had the soup and sandwich combo (approx. $12) and started with a cup of the smoked corn and green chile chowder, which on a chilly day like today was perfectly creamy and rich with a pleasent heat from the green chile. Then had the lamb sausage sandwich with baby arugula, goat cheese and grilled onions, which came across as a take on a Greek gyro kinda thing in flavor, I would have liked some sort of sauce spread on the bread, it was served with a heaping pile of potato chips. The place was full and the serve was friendly and efficient. I would definitely go back again for lunch.
  6. Last time I was drunk cooking I mistook the end of my thumb for the cilantro...and yes going to the emergency room 24 hours later to get it stiched up doesn't work either
  7. For what it is worth, I believe the early buzz on the restaurant was that it would feature "signature dishes inspired by Chef Ripert’s own family traditions and recipes."
  8. well they do have an Eastern Market salad on the menu...though somehow I doubt the veggies for the salad actually come from Eastern Market!
  9. congrats...just keep her away from blueberries...
  10. well I was going to blast you all with a rant about how dare you judge a menu before you try it...if you give a casual read of Central's menu much if it sounds plain (fried chicken, hanger steak, tuna burger, lamb stew) but we all know differently...etc. etc. But holy crap. fried calamari, chicken soup, tuna carpaccio, warm chocolate cake...ok, ok, let's hope the mini pork pies are to die for and the calamari is a revelation is frying. I'll go with an open mind. except for the beer list...what is this a Ruby Tuesday's, no wait even Ruby Tuesday's has a better beer list (Ruby's Beer List)
  11. Yeah, if you get your ass up to catch an 8am match at the Lucky Bar and you are NOT drinking beer then you have serious issues.
  12. only having had ceviche at a couple places in DC (I'm a fan of the dish in general) would I rate Oyamel's "Best in Show-DC" I don't know, but it definitely had that one bite, damn that's good factor...it's top with slices of avocado and mixed with some finely minced jalapeno so by the time you have finished the dish your mouth has a pleasent tingle. I would certainly order it again.
  13. Stopped into Oyamel after viewing the Turner exhibit at the National Gallery (that dude must have stumbled upon a treasure trove of pastoral "mushrooms" late in his career...wow!) anyway I digress...while it was an enjoyable meal, I would have to rate it my least favorite of the Jose Empire. Nothing in particular was wrong, and I would certainly go back again, but just given the choice I would go with Jaleo or Zaytinya first, perhaps my palette is just more tuned toward Spanish and Middle Eastern cuisine. We were seated at a table for two yet I was sitting closer to the woman at the table next to me than the woman across from me, so we decided to cozy up to the bar instead. we started off with a pitcher of margaritas and a round of tacos, the duck confit were ok, surpassed by the BBQ pork tacos. The early hit was the red snapper ceviche...yum! The next round was a quesadilla with cheese and Mexican truffles aka corn fungus, which was decent, the little side cup of green sauce was HOT, followed by the braised short ribs which were excellent. Dessert was a cafe olla, basically a chocolate/coffee pudding topped with a really tasty star anise ice cream. The bar staff was friendly and very eager to discuss tequila and mezcal...they poured a sample of the mezcal and it was damn good (I should hope so for $50 a bottle!), much like a single malt whiskey in fact, not quite as pungent but similar flavor notes. I could imagine a very pleasent evening sipping away at a bottle! If I remember correctly they are doing a free tequila tasting happy hour on Halloween...they are really trying to push tequila as a high end sipping alcohol rather then a low end chugging alcohol and said that they have over 50 bottles of tequila in stock.
  14. 1) where will this wine bar be located? 2) I'll start the complaints early...do something about the noise already
  15. Haven't seen this posted yet...Wash Post business section article on Prince George's County cracking down on "illegal" food trucks run by Latinos. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...7102402574.html
  16. Well, I think the "nature of the beast" of any new, hip, hot spot in Dupont Circle prime time on a Friday is crowded and loud. So try it, say, on a Tuesday night...or perhaps on a Sunday after a day at the Phillips.
  17. After aimlessly driving around Reston* looking for an asian restaurant that, although given a thumbs up in the 2007 washingtonian cheap eats dining guide, has since closed...my friend and I ended up in "lovely" Reston Town Center and Busara Thai. While not horrid, the ingredients were fresh tasting and the pickled garnishes where delish, my friend perhaps best summed it up when she declared that the kitchen must have only one sauce which resembles molassas and is incorporated in every dish. The duck breast was nicely cooked and the left over drumstick sure will be tasty for dinner tonite...but I'll try my best to never go back to Reston Town Center. * Note to urban planners -- please include some street numbers from time to time so one can figure exactly where they are on the Reston Parkway, because, ya know, at night, all those darn strip malls look exactly the same.
  18. Walking into Regent Thai, I had one of those I've been here before moments...I believe it use to be that piano bar/lounge place, but now all decked out in Thai artifacts. It was completely dead at 12:30 on a Friday for lunch, like we were the only two people there...which is a shame, because while I'm no expert on Thai food, this was some of the best that I've had in the boundaries of the District. Most of the Thai standards are here, and we went with them, the spring rolls were perfectly crisp, the penang chicken curry was ok (the chicken was dry and the sauce on the sweet side) however the star of lunch was the seafood drunken noodles...rated on the menu as 3 chilis it was not dumbed down for the western palate, littered with those little thai chilis that linger with you for hours. Nice!
  19. Dined at Montsouris last night...not sure if it was because it was a Tuesday night or the Plea for P syndrome, but the place was quiet with only a handful of tables occupied. we went with the salmon gravlox which were very good, 4 large slices with a dollop of creme fraise and some grilled bread. Spinach salad with pears, blue cheese and walnuts which was fine, nothing wrong with it per se but I guess a spinach salad can only be so exciting. I had the butcher steak (discussed multiple time aboves) and it was very nice, the mashed potatoes might actually be the star of the dish! and sampled the Toulouse sausage with lentils, the sausage was great and the lentils were nicely cooked, but it is a big heaping plate of lentils and sausage and nothing else which got a little repetitive after a while. All in all a pleasent dinner was had.
  20. Ended up at Veritas last night...overall the place is very nice. I can see how some might gripe over the wine prices and you can quickly run up a large tab...but there seemed like plenty of selections in the $8-$10 range, which isn't completely out of line for wine by the glass prices at a nice restaurant. We also went with a selection of cheese, 3 for $11 (I think) all very tasty, although I'll have to agree that the bowls with the accompaniments are challenging for the thick fingered! A welcome addition to the DC scene, and a good spot to know about for impressing a date or drinks after dinner etc.
  21. Corduroy has plenty of pork less items on the menu and the chef is more than willing to work around any other dietary restrictions you might have plus the room is quiet enough for a good business dinner.
  22. and while I don't what time you are doing this meeting or what their coffee policy is, the lounge at Firefly could be an alternative option.
