  1. I hit up Central for the first time Friday...took the parents and we were all suitably impressed. Being a holiday weekend I would say the place was busy without being packed. We tried the mussel soup, onion tart, tuna burger, hanger steak, side of green beans, and lamb stew...and of course the Kit Kat Bar. Honestly every dish was very good to excellent. the soup, tart, hanger and lamb in particular. I've heard rumblings of poor service quality lately and would say it was professional if not overly friendly...but then again I wasn't expecting Pieces of Flair. I guess my one issue was I thought some of the pricing on the appetizer section was a little pricey, with a lot of items floating into the teens, but the entree prices where what I expected (high teens to mid $20s)...however, the quality was well worth the price. and you are certainly not getting short changed, I had enough hanger left over for a lovely sandwich the next day!
  2. I ate some McDonald's a couple weekends ago for the first time in maybe 5 years. The Days Inn by the Ohio State Fairgrounds shares a parking lot with a 24 hours MickeyD's. Catch was only the drive thru was open after midnight, hey we decided to try walking through the drive thru, nope we were told that was breaking McDonald's Laws. We eventaully flagged down a car of young lasses who appeared to be as equally inebriated as us and convinced them to buy us some food. 20 piece nugget at 1am when you are drunk mighty fine eating. Best part was when I went back up to the drive thru window and demanded more sweet and sour dipping sauce from the manager. He gave it to me and I told him that he just broke his own fucking law. Drunk and harassing the overnight McDonald's manager...priceless.
  3. I was introduced to a woman 2 weeks ago, she was nice, rather cute, maybe a little high strung corporate lobbyist for my taste, but hey can't always be picky these days. Then I found out she was a vegan...could I really date someone that doesn't eat bacon or cheese. I don't think so.
  4. I'll keep the Sonoma thread going...last week I finally went upstairs and had drinks in the lounge...sexy! Very sexy. Understated hip, with couches and arm chairs that says class without being over the top snobby. A few complaints For a wine bar, only 4 red and 4 whites by the glass seems a little weak. Beer selection by the bottle and not very good, Peroni was the best offering. They recently (according to the waiter) started offering a handful of small plates which came across a little pricey. $8 for a plate of olives, ok, you get a lot of olives and they were tasty, but the other offerings were in the $10 plus range (we didn't sample so not sure how much bang for your buck you are getting)...we went with the meat board, which was lusty as always. Bottomline: Class place to go for some drinks and snacks. Great for a date, great for a hip happy hour, great for meeting the parents. Great for avoiding the drunk Hill staffer scene of the neighboring dive bars
  5. White square plates now being used at the Capitol Lounge...even the bartender was ashamed...toss them on the garbage heap of triteness.
  6. Another option: King Size room at Hotel Topaz (if you like the boutique hotel thing) and a stroll to Komi (which is about 4 blocks away). Brunch at the Tabard Inn the next morning.
  7. Jimmy T's on the corner of East Capitol and approximately 5th. (or maybe it is 4th or 6th, but right around there.) Greasy spoon joint with attitude.
  8. I spoke to Senior Canales over the weekend and he said he was placing an order for chorizos and other deli meats today and should have delivery by Wednesday and then should have a limited deli selection up and running at Tortilla Cafe this week. I put in an order for 12 blood sausages which I will be cooking up at the DR Picnic. Saturday was kind of dead at the Market, Sunday was slammed for Market Day but unfortunately most of the stalls (like the grilled food vendors) aren't EM regulars (I did buy two Jamacian meat patties to sneak into the DC United game, yummy half time snack!)
  9. Ha! Every time I have a beer drinking "session" at my local, I end up rip roaring drunk!
  10. Fenty claims 18-24 months to rebuild http://www.nbc4.com/news/13229154/detail.html?dl=mainclick
  11. I'm a huge fan of Pringles...their quality control is a bit lacking, some batches have lots of sprayed on flavoring, some don't...but in general I like the Salt and Vinegar and Jalapeno. I also love Cheetos. I have also noticed that the quality of Doritos has gone way down hill. I suspect that they reformulated the product (probably over trans fats) and now they leave a cardboard like after taste. To the point that I won't eat them anymore. Utz salt and vinegar are generally good as well. The waffle cut chips at PX are also rather addictive.

  13. I've lived on the Hill for 10 years and while I did not grow up with the Market, I can relate to you HillValley. Every weekend I buy cold cuts at Canales deli (Smoked Turkey and provolone cheese) and I have watched their daughter Catalina grow up from being a teenage, through college, and now married. Mrs. Canales poking fun at me. Chats with Senior Canales about DC United. Eastern Market is a rare spot of true community in DC. It is a sad Monday.
  14. and as of Sunday they still had them as a special...I remember making the same Deadliest Catch comment when I was there...so Lizzie perhaps this is your place to go! and if you do, also order the cheese tart with cippolini onions on the first course section...very tasty!
  15. The World's Deadliest Catch...or so I've seen on TV Reminds me of when I was in Vegas, and in classic Vegas style we had to do one of the large casino buffets (we went to the one at MGM) and they had piles of King Crab, I'm sure it was of crappy quality but I had about 20 legs!
  16. Quite possibly the scarest moment I've ever had at a fastfood restaurant was the McDonald's by the Baltimore Travel Plaza (which in itself is scary enough). This very overweight man and a woman (who was so nasty I couldn't tell if it was his wife or mother) were eating next to us. The woman grabbed for some of his fries and he slapped her hand away and growled at her. Like gutteral animalistic growl. My friend and I looked at each other and were like, did he really just growl at her. Needless to say we quickly finished our meal and left...never to return.
  17. SUNY Albany - rated worst food by Princeton Review 1991. After two years of eating that slop I moved off campus and started cooking for myself.
  18. woo hoo, Happy Birthday to us! I'll be there for drinks, dinner, and the steaming hot sex.
