  1. I've had luck finding the Thai sticky or glutinous rice at Yes!
  2. Yesterday: roasted eggplant, tomatoes, mozzarella, oregano salad w/ balsamic vinaigrette Ground cherries Genesis Merlot 2006 Tonight: Gwyneth Paltrow's Fried Zucchini with Pasta Salad w/ balsamic vinaigrette Bourbon w/ peach puree (Vegetables and fruits courtesy of Bull Run CSA. Gawd... I love CSA season.)
  3. There seems to be a slew of restaurants near the movie theater although Google maps is lacking in this area. Three finds: Hank's Tavern & Eats, 6507 America Boulevard: Several g-f choices but the wait staff wasn't all that attentive to the dietary restrictions. He ordered chicken Caesar w/o croutons; I ordered Caesar w/o protein. His order came with croutons and protein, mine w/o croutons. As we're trying to deconstruct the salad, the wait staff did offer to take his away and bring the correct salad. There was a good 10 minute wait for the g-f salad. Decent salad though. Wild Onion, 6504 America Blvd: Discovered this after we had eaten at Hank's but the catering menu looks interesting. Carolina Kitchen, 6501 America Blvd: Offers several g-f options on their buffet as well as on the menu.
  4. Buy With Me: $55 for four-course Chef’s Tasting Menu for 2 from Al Crostino ($110 value)
  5. Any gluten-free lunch options near PG Plaza or College Park metro stations? Olive Garden is listed on one g-f directory but I'm not familiar with the area and might be overlooking a true gem. ~ louise
  6. Not really in a CSA basket, but a dilemma nonetheless: I have tons of sage. I've done the brown butter sage thingy for pasta, sage pesto, and sage w/ (fried and mashed) potatoes. An internet search yields lots of turkey/sage and pork/sage recipes but nothing is inspiring me. Suggestions?
  7. Personally, I'd go with strawberry fruit leather but here are 99 other ideas.
  8. Still looking for a ride from NW DC or Red line stop or any VA metro stop. Send a PM if you're able to help out. ~ louise
  9. ISO ride to/from NW DC or metro stop. Send me a PM. And... yes to the rosemary fizzy stuff. ~ louise
  10. "I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." --Martin Luther King, Jr.
  11. Gochujang? Has anyone actually seen it or purchased it?
  12. DC Mayor Vincent Gray, and council members Kwame Brown, Yvette M. Alexander, Tommy Wells, Muriel Bowser and Michael A. Brown following their arrest, protesting the federal spending deal that imposed riders on the District.
  13. Shanghai Garden... known for its Peking Duck... will be closing at the end of the month. A Van Ness neighborhood staple for over 37 years, the owner has decided to turn the building into condos.
  14. Short grain brown rice, topped with pork soboro and a scrambled egg. Not the conventional breakfast but I felt the need for something a bit substantial.
  15. This has become my once-a-month guilty pleasure. Recently disappointed by the fried whiting but the collards and mac 'n' cheese were decent. However, a Sunday breakfast -- timed before the church crowd descends -- of (fill in the blank) and scrapple always hits the spot. Rumor has it that they close on Mondays to steam clean the walls. What's not to love?
  16. Aperol Sunset Roasted chicken thigh w/ a spicy peanut sauce (peanut butter, tamari, water, ginger, garlic and Sriracha) Caesar salad 2009 Cono Sur Viiognier
  17. My first focacia! It was topped with cherry tomatoes, feta, rosemary, and shallots; I made a garlic oil to coat the pan and drizzle on top. This no knead recipe was really quite easy and very tasty; I can't think of a reason to buy the stuff in the store.
  18. Grilled cheese with Fontina, spinach, mushrooms and shallots. (In retrospect, a smidgen of mustard on the inside would have been great.)
  19. [in case you haven't noticed... I go into a cooking frenzy at the beginning of the month...] I don't need two loaves of bread and don't have room to freeze them. If I cut the recipe in half, can i safely reduce the amount of yeast? Conversely, if a recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of yeast, can I safely use a whole packet? [i'm worried about this.] How many teaspoons are in a packet of yeast? According to the packet: there are 26 x .25 teaspoons = 10.25 teaspoons OR 3.25 tablespoons. For some reason, that doesn't seem right.
  20. Pizza -- flatbread topped with marinated artichoke hearts, red onions and fontina
  21. According to Cook's Thesaurus I can substitute plain, low-fat yogurt for buttermilk. Although I know I can make my own by adding lemon juice/vinegar to milk, I have yogurt on hand. When used as a marinade prior to frying chicken should I thin the yogurt (to milk-like consistency) before use?
