  1. Came here for the first time last night and will definitely return. Found most everything above average and ditto thumbs up for the Boylan soda fountain. Had a carnitas burrito, lady had a carne asada burrito. Found mine to be pretty much perfect. Carnitas were extremely tender, well seasoned and really juicy. Nice heat with the fresh jalapeno. Was a little less enthusiastic about the carne asada..was pretty chewy (as it can be) and less moist. I'm also trying to find out what was so spicy in her burrito..either the black beans or the grilled veggies? I love heat (pain, in fact) so didn't bother me but she was a little surprised. Chips, salsa and guac were all very good. Particularly liked the harbanero salsa. Now for my minor qualm - there is something disorienting about how the menu is constructed and organized. I'm not the only one right!? Just paralyzing somehow. I have to imagine this is slowing order times. I couldn't put my finger on it..contemplated taking a picture. As someone else mentioned, the pricing structure for taco toppings is also a little bizarre - part of the reason I just went with the burrito. All in all, yet another great addition to the area and certainly grounds to skip Chipotle!
  2. Went twice over the break this week for breakfast. Tried both a sausage and bacon egg/cheese biscuit. The biscuit is awesome, although I maintain there are temperature issues with this sandwich. The egg is a pre-cooked mold (fresh or frozen I have no idea) and simply does not get hot enough in the time it takes to melt the cheese and warm the biscuit. I like my food pretty hot, but this arrives lukewarm and is nearly cold by the time you finish it, in my two experiences. I could just be an outlier, but hope they can fix this because it's a great morning bite otherwise. Fresh OJ was delicious the first morning and not so great the next day - tasted like the oranges were just bad - slightly bitter. Either way it's nice to see fresh OJ for just 2 bucks. In general I think everything very well priced here. Probably going to check it for lunch today, so will report back on that!
  3. I live just down the block so can serve as eyes and ears here. Looks like they will be open 7am to 9pm tomorrow. I rolled through en route to the farmer market first thing saturday morning. They were open with a limited menu and were not actually accepting any money (in lieu of donations to a local non-profit) , so everything was on the house! The interior is just awesome. Really individual vibe and cozy as hell. Staff was very friendly, very gracious. This feels like a neighborhood joint in the best way. I had a cappuccino and an order of beignets. cappa was excellent but could have been a bit hotter temperature-wise in my opinion. beignets were spot on. I've had them only a few times as a kid and this brought me back. consistency was on point - the slightest crisp on the outside, warm and doughy inside but not raw. Breakfast menu looks dangerous - between coffee and a bacon/egg/cheese biscuit, it's gonna be hard not to stop here on the way to the metro in the morning! Lunch menu was small but intriguing. Just a few sandwiches and salads and two soups. A blackened turkey with smoked gouda, arugula and dijoinaise sounded really yummy. Curious what kind of bread these are served on - might be worth adding that detail to the menu. Everything seems pretty priced to move, especially compared to what you pay at Starbucks or Cosi which are equidistant. Sandwiches were about $6 i think? I'm eager to sample the menu. Full line of Abita beers is a nice touch too.
  4. I will make a valiant plug for homemades, baked on a platter and topped with a cut up bird from SUPER POLLO. Mix of pepper jack and cheddar cheese with jalapenos, pintos, cilantro and fresh guac.. Better yet if you are able to score some of Guajillo's fiery salsa. Seriously some of the best nachos.
  5. Went today at McPherson square. The wait is out of control - I got there around 11:30 to find a line around the block. I decided to stick it out as we were told about 45mins from the back of the line. Try 90++ before I got to order and another 15 before my order actually came up. Ouch! Had to sneak back into the office - I've never taken a lunch that long in 3 yrs. This was my first roll ever, so I dont speak with any authority but this was truly amazing! Buttered/grilled bun tastes just like the outside of a grilled cheese. Pile of lobster is sizable - you can pick a bunch off it and still have a sandwich full. Such a clean sweet flavor. As said above - would never wait that long again but the roll is worth every cent.
  6. Looking forward to trying this place out tonight, though find the Yelp reviews really disconcerting. This thread led me to believe things started out rocky but smoothed out over the past two months, but the negatives run right up through the most recent reviews. Bummer. Without having seen the specials I'm planning to order the eggplant parm, a cured meat of some sort, maybe some burrata, and the funghi pie. Seem like pretty safe choices, so hoping for the best here. Any more tips on sure winners appreciated! Will report back..
  7. My mom, a northern VA native and semi-recent west coast transplant, is in town and getting the Ray's tour this weekend. Hellburger on Friday was a big win. Managed to precede the out-the-door lines by about 10 mins, phew. Still unrivaled as the best burger IMO. Tonight it's the Steaks with Grandma too for an early bird dinner. 5 sharp. Can barely wait for the hanger.
  8. Finally made it up there yesterday. We strolled in just before 3 and browsed around a bit, sat down a few minutes later. Took a look at the menu and decided on that yummy buffalo mozz/parma ham sandwich when suddenly heard the words no one wants to hear! "The kitchen is actually closed now." D'oh! I hadn't really paid attention to the hours. Shouldn't have doddled on the way over there I guess. That said, we had a pretty great experience. Friendly, attentive service and first rate product. Started off with a glass of the HighDef Riesling, sweet but very tasty. My lady had the raspberry/lemon Fizzy Lizzy -- delicious! Hadn't had that one before. Ended up going with the 3 cheese/meat plate: Drunken Goat, Seahive Cheddar and Rosette de Lyon dry sausage. All outstanding. Seahive Cheddar had a great salty tang to it. Bread was fresh and crusty and the crackers very flavorful, kinda everything bagelish. My lone gripe is that I felt the portion of Rosette was a little puny. A few more slices would have rounded out the plate -- the cheese portions were just right though. I'll be back soon though and look forward to making my way through the menu! Great new spot.
  9. Can I pledge allegiance to the Hanger? The three course Sunday special for $23ish is just a ridiculous value. I've made a point to dine on that night at least once a month.
  10. she's right though -- in the winter, it's more that the hill is transformed into a vicious wind tunnel! the walk to the metro slays me on a daily basis. still -- i'm coming.
  11. Ren's was no match for Ippudo, but much better than I expected. I wish I'd gone with the fatty pork as I see suggested above. The standard pork was most definitely the weakest link -- rubbery and flavorless. I also found the broth to be a little too salty, but not to any serious detriment.
  12. i'm a huge fan of the carne asada here. very tasty and a great value -- it can easily satisfy two if you preface with chips and salsa can anyone deconstruct their hot sauce? smoky/charred flavor and absurdly hot! most curious about the almost creamy texture though -- i love it.
  13. after having registered many moons ago, i think this is my first actual post. damn if i won't be stopping through screwtop by weeks end. i've yet to venture from courthouse over to the Zaso complex but man does it seem like there are some winners. thread is inspiring -- seems like a place i need to support asap! see you soon, wendy!
