  1. I remember seeing something about this in a Reston afternoon update email: "Wooboi Chicken To Bring 'Nashville Hot Chicken' to Herndon" by Catherine Douglas Moran on restonnow.com I think this may be the same industrial park (or very close by) where Enyate Ethiopian Restaurant, and Aslin Beer, are located.
  2. A couple of "beer" places in Brussels that I did not see mentioned above: Le Poechenellekelder (The Puppet Cellar) - a quick whiz away from Mannequin Pis - really chill beer bar, pretty decent selection of various Belgian styles. They have a food menu, but we only drank here one midafternoon. Nuetnigenough (Never, ever, enough?) - a favorite of none other than Greg Engert, local beer guy extraordinaire. Hearty Belgian fare, great beer selection! Mix of locals and tourists. A little small and cramped, and they do not take reservations. We waited 30 minutes for a table (party of 5), but had a beer at the back bar while waiting (with the guy who pours at Cantillon Brewery and his pals), and then a great time once seated.
  3. If the Sterling location can do a beer list like the Arlington one usually has, I can see myself going there nearly every weekend for "dinner".
  4. https://www.restonnow.com/2019/01/18/plans-for-jinya-looking-more-uncertain-for-reston-town-center/?mc_cid=21bb8399b9&mc_eid=e45eb70003
  5. Has anyone checked out the Ninja Foodi yet? It is supposed to be like the Instant Pot, but also having air frying/crisping capabilities. Looking for holiday gifts for the young adults.
  6. AhSo by Jason Maddens in Brambleton might also be a good option. I think they are closed on Mondays, and don't serve lunch on Saturdays, but worth a look.
  7. The list includes "Italian Roast Beef". Is that the same thing as "Hot Italian Beef"? If so, I had always thought that that was a Chicago specialty. If not, can you describe the difference, if you have had both?
  8. But for The Counter, you need to contend with actual RTC garages, etc., whereas RTC West is not really part of RTC, although parking over there isn't great either.
  9. Not to totally derail this discussion, but both Chapter 7 and Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings are (or at least used to be) available to both individuals and business entities. Chapter 11 is not well-suited for an individual for at least a couple of reasons, but it is an option. I think Ericandblueboy above has raised an appropriate issue--the possibility that the authors are not writing the headlines. Thus, we may not be able to pin it directly on the authors.
  10. Really a word, but spelled "trep-i-datious". Hopefully I am not restating the obvious from somewhere, but up at 23rd and Eads in Crystal City is the world-famous Kabob Palace. I used to go there all the time, but my local travels don't put me there very often anymore. I did recently make it by, and it seemed to be as good as ever. Go for "no salad" (which is basically worthless) with your kabob, and you will end up with enough chickpeas and rice (and they are good) to last you a couple of days. Based on how crowded it was in the counter ordering area (they have added a wall inside the entrance to cram in a couple of extra tables), I recommend calling in your takeout order ahead of time, and it seemed that most people had done that. I used to go very late at night, when it was crowded, but less so. I could not tell if you would have included Northside Ten on E. Glebe Road as being on your Del Ray radar. I have only been once, but thought it was pretty good. I think it is the sister to Southside 815 down at the south end of OTA.
  11. So, I checked out the website, and, if I am not mistaken, Nunu (a picture of him behind the bar is one of the photos) used to be at Thai Tada, further down Elden Street (closer to Worldgate and the Dulles Toll Road). I thought he was the owner there. A couple of exchanges on Yelp, of all places, seemed to indicate that Nunu is no longer at Thai Tada, but also that he was not the owner/manager at Thai Tada. In any event, I will be checking out his new place soon, and thanks for the heads-up!
  12. SFD is owned by the same folks (mainly Mango Mike, I guess) who own Pork Barrel BBQ in Del Ray. I understood that, initially, it would be the same BBQ in both places, but I am not sure that this was or continues to be the case. I have had their sausage and chicken gumbo (listed as a special on a sign at the cash register, but seemingly always available) several times, and it hasn't disappointed yet.
  13. That big black building is not the Sheraton. The Sheraton is the two buildings to the right of it in the photo, the rectangular building angling from left to right, and the “C” shaped building. The black highrise (11800) used to be called “Reston International Center”. A company named Internet, Inc., was headquartered there way back in the day. The company owned and operated the MOST network servicing ATMs.
  14. I am not sure if I am understanding you correctly, but the building at 11800 Sunrise Valley Drive has been there at least 25 years. That concrete monstrosity to the left of 11800 in your photo is a parking garage (you should see how it looks from Reston Parkway), and all of that red clay soil is now covered with the apartments/condos I mentioned in my earlier post.
  15. I think you meant to say Sunrise Valley Drive, which is on the south side of the Toll Road, and is highlighted on your map. That is the road adjacent to Reston National Golf Course. Yes, those apartments (condos?) are a huge eyesore, but every cloud has a silver lining. I just recently learned that the formerly excellent Reston Kabob, which was displaced from a small strip of shops torn down to build this mess, is going to reopen wherever that complex is going to have some street level retail. A Peruvian chicken place is also slated to open there.
  16. Over the past couple of visits, as it was nearing closing time (about 20 minutes before advertised close), I noticed that the Vienna location will turn off their gyro rotisseries, and when you order either the Plaka or Chicago gyro, they will either slice the meat off of the spit, or it may have already been sliced off, and then they throw it on the flat top to reheat/finish cooking. It really detracts from the flavor of the meat (IMO), and the sandwich overall seems more greasy than usual. The most recent time, I asked them to not put the meat (Chicago) on the flat top, and they balked at the idea, saying they needed to ensure that it is fully cooked. I continue to generally like their food, but will not be going in so close to closing time any longer.
  17. Agree that the beer was not up to par. Just received this email message: We are honored to have been a part of your community and your history. When we opened Portner Brewhouse in March of last year, we sought to give a piece of Alexandria’s history a home in the West End and provide a community gathering place to relax and enjoy the company of friends and family. While this chapter in Portner brewing history may seem short-lived, it will remain with us for the entirety of our lives. In realizing the changes to the surrounding landscape, we pushed for appropriate changes to our lease agreement, which were temporarily provided by the landlord. However, permanent change could not be achieved. We did everything in our power to sustain the company it for as long as possible, which is why we are sharing the conclusion to this chapter with you today. Whatever the future holds, keep us in your thoughts, drink really great beer and hold family dear. Prost! Catherine, Margaret, and the entire Portner Brewhouse Team
  18. Dive bar, indeed, but it has not been Brinkley's for a number of years now. It turned into a "pub" with a British sort-of name that I don't recall, and is now just called the 7 Corners Pub, I think. I have no idea if there were ownership changes along the way, or if it was just rebranding. I think the last time I actually went inside was close to 30 years ago.
  19. Signage (actually, awnings) went up recently at what used to be called Hoffman Town Center (I think they are trying to rebrand it) on Eisenhower Avenue in Alexandria. National Science Foundation recently moved into a new building adjacent to HTC. The space they are going in used to be (I am pretty sure) a Ruby Tuesday.
  20. Freshness for beers that don't age well is also a big problem at places like Total Wine in McLean. Many beers languish on their shelves as well. German Gourmet is pretty strictly German beers, from what I remember. A bit of a hike from Arlington and such is Norm's Beer and Wine in Vienna, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this year! They have sacrificed some of their selection of Belgian/European beers, as a result of the onslaught of domestics, but you would be hard pressed to find one of the "little guys" that has the selection that Norm's has.
  21. This sure sounds like The Halal Guys--could they possibly be that similar? ETA: Just checked their site, it is The Halal Guys. There is already a thread on the chain here, in that they have previously opened several local locations.
  22. Delia's has several outposts throughout NoVa, and there is a rather old thread on here (last post from 2010) for the place. It is mentioned in other threads as well. Not sure if you were starting a new thread to highlight the new location and the fact that they are hiring.
  23. I remember the place as "Nurnberger Bratwurst Stube" from my time there in the late 1980's, but it is findable online as "Nurnberger Bratwurst Glockl am Dom". Great Kellarbeer, great Nurnberger sausages. More of a locals place, and certainly (at least back then) not the tourist trap that is the Hofbrauhaus. On the back side of the Marienplatz.
  24. This thread might get a little more active in the near future, in that Caboose is building out a brewpub at the Mosaic District, which will be a little more accessible than their current location (although if you are a biker, the current location can't be beat). Their beers used to be mediocre-to-bad, notwithstanding that the brewer had some credentials from somewhere. They seem to be improving, and I am pretty sure that I heard that they have fresh blood in the brewing operation. They used to only offer the burger on Tuesdays, but as of about two weeks ago, it was added to the regular menu. I need to get in there and try it.
