  1. Oh my, oh my. How many doggy boxes did we take home tonight? More detailed post to follow tomorrow, but let's start the conversation with a big thanks to Pizzeria Orso and all the Rock-a-fathers and mothers who made this a successful evening. To those who finished their pizzas after thunderous rounds of antipasti, arrosticini, friturre, chicken, and pappa al pomodoro (plus wine) - hats off to you, good sirs. And to the box-carriers among us, lunch tomorrow! Favorite pizzas out there? My cotto e funghi pulled a long drag of smoke from the oven as it arrived and reminded our side of the table that the best part of the meal was just beginning...
  2. Sounds great. No need to twist my arm. (+thetrain)
  3. Don Rockleone - tried the fried mussels recently? We had an order tonight; they've bumped up the lemon and toned down the garlic in the aioli. HUGE improvement - closer to a thin, lemony hollandaise. Big garlic fan, but sauce v1.5 is on the spot.
  4. Abused my privileges at the pizza oven last week (a closed Elevation Burger on Sunday evening steered us to a 3rd trip and finished off the bender) - Vesuvius (excellent, but a pizza with burrata as a side - even better), porcini special (porcinis front and center, delicious), Crudo (yes), and DOC (with a few more basil leaves, I wouldn't order anything else). Special thanks goes the bar for bringing us back with a friendly pour and excellent small dishes. The pizzas stand on their own, but the mushroom crostini and fried mussels skewers are making an argument for a dinner of small plates and beer. We particularly enjoyed the crostini, cool mushroom puree (not overly salted, huge plus) stand up nicely against a warm, smoked prosciutto. The mussels, flash fried with lemon on top, are a fresh twist, but be mindful of the garlic dipping sauce - it will blow your hair back. Back again when we're in the neighborhood; the pizza is right and the seats are friendly.
  5. Welcome to the Thunderdome. Orso is putting out a mighty fine pizza; chasing Motorino's, and up there with the best of DC. Ordered a side of burrata and left a happy customer. Vesuvius is next on my list. Happy eating.
  6. The goat taco, the goat burrito, the goat torta. I never decide until the second before Jose asks for my order when I call it in. Yes El Charrito is a contact in my cell phone. Every so often the meats are dry, but so far the torta has never been plagued by the drought. Highly recommend it if you are looking to change up your charrito order. The goat is always accompanied by a mixtus pupusa. Some of the red sauce goes on the ever so spicy slaw, some for dipping the pupusa, and a splash on the taco/burrito/torta. Heaven. El Charrito is my comfort food go to. Oddly, I seem to crave it most on Tuesdays, the one day Jose rests.
  7. Companion Numero Uno, again - thetrain and I had a lovely walk back from Northside, and because I'm a bastard, I filled my glass with water before we left, took it with me in a bottle, and measured the amount at home. 3oz! 3.5oz if I'm generous! I didn't want to make a scene about it in Northside, and I thought that it was enough to ask 2 different servers. Obviously, I was wrong about that, but right about the pour. I'm beyond thrilled that Northside has opened, and I'll be back there often and with enthusiasm. Screw-ups happen, but guys, try to not to make this one. I love you all. ...I offer myself for vigorous junk-punching.
