  1. Happy Birthday Antonio, may your mind always be as crisp as your chicken, and your day as delicious as your brisket!
  2. I don't know why New Heights and Mr. Cox isn't getting as much recognition. To me it falls in the same camp at Trummer's on Main. Spot on food and creativity that just isn't getting the attention they deserve even though they are excelling while some other places are not. I try to give it out as a rec as much as possible because I really love it. I need to get back to try the current menu. We have been out of town so much we haven't been to a lot of our favorite places in a while. I do think being in the dining guide will be a big advantage for a few months at least. I was also surprised at the size of the review for Central, very small. Some of the reviews were very lacking.
  3. I think he misstated the gluten based, he probably meant he didn't know if it was rice based, or some other gluten free flour base. I am hoping more like Udi's which is my favorite one so far.
  4. Yes, Happy Belated Birthday agm!! Hope it was a great day.
  5. I know Blue Duck Tavern has a pretty nice bar menu, but I can't find it on the website of the hotel.
  6. I just noticed that very exciting. Also Dan said American Flatbread has GF flatbreads, but I have yet to try them, hope to make the dinner.
  7. Charlie Palmer is a good happy hour spot, but depends on when you go if it is quiet. Equinox would totally fit the bill too. I like the bar at Blue Duck too.
  8. I have a spice mix from In a Pinch Spices in Bethesda, Maryland. I found a website saying they were at the Bethesda Farmer's Market, but I can't find which one. Anyone see them around? I posted here as I know it would be at a Farmer's Market, they don't have their own store. Any help would be appreciated.
  9. Thanks for all the tips. I agree on the Udi's pizza shells, my husband will eat them!! I found a quinoa pasta at Whole Foods that has been my favorite so far, but I haven't tried a ton as you have to get through a whole box first, but my hubby will eat it too so that is good. Some of the pastas I have tried so far taste very strange. I really love the GF cornbread from WF too. I might try to make stuffing with it for Thanksgiving, although Food and Wine magazine just had an awesome looking sticky rice stuffing recipe I might try. Although I might add some things to their recipe to jazz it up a bit too. I was really missing pretzels and got Glutino's, but will look for Snyder's. It is interesting how your dining landscape changes. Going home to see my family I thought was going to be really hard to eat out because there aren't a lot of choices. But I did surprisingly well. I got buckwheat cakes and sausage for breakfast, and where we went to dinner I could have just about anything on the menu so that was reassuring. I am excited to try Carmine's GF pastas, and Hubby is excited to eat a big bowl of regular pasta in front of me without any guilt. When I was getting ready for a wedding I was in a few weeks ago in Boston my husband went to the North Side and got a heaping bowl of pasta and meatballs. He also escorted me quickly by some of the big pastry shops in town and held my hand and then got me some chocolates. I have to give major props to Restaurant 3, which is one of the best places for me to go for happy hour in my area. Giant in Ballston actually has a good selection of GF products, it was suprising, and Wegman's in Fairfax had an ok selection, but I expected them to be better than they were. Haven't been to MOM yet, but will go when my current supply is down. I am slowly finding my way around, and my husband is getting better and better at looking at menus and labels. But it helps so much to know what products are good, because they aren't cheap and I hate buying something and then hating it. So keep it up! Anyone know where you can get a burger with a GF bun? Or have you ever taken a GF bun to a burger place and put it on that? I go to Big Buns and get a burger in a bowl, which is pretty close to hitting the mmmm burger spot, but just thought I would ask.
  10. Was there last night saw Emma at the bar. I know there was a DR member at the table beside me, but I have never met him and he seemed to be enjoying his company so I didn't want to interrupt. We had a very good meal, with nice service. Some dishes were really good and a few were stellar. All in all it was a really nice evening. My favorites were the parapadelle, veal carne crudo and the lamb entree.
  11. Nice to see everybody! Wish I had a chance to talk to more people, but I got caught up in some fun conversations regarding ninjas, diet coke and Galileo (not in the same convo). All the food was delicious. I particularly liked the rice salad, eggplant something, braised carrots, fried chicken and pretty much everything else. Wish we could have come earlier and stayed longer, it has just been a busy time of year. I think my favorite line was when I walked up to a friend of goodeats who asked, "Are you a lawyer too?" It was a nice reminder how many of us there are.
  12. That seems to make much more sense to me. And it alleviates the teacher from the duty, which shouldn't be put on them. In most cases the school would not be liable unless a teacher committed gross negligence, which is a high standard, but I can understand them being hyper sensitive. It just seems to be a little silly to send this home to parents instead of just providing something at this point. With all the other regulations they are putting in place for parent foods. If you are going to be that hyper sensitive then provide it or put the job on someone who volunteers for it.
  13. Ugg it's so frustrating. On the one hand I don't think food allergies should be considered a disability under federal statutes, but on the other if they aren't a disability then the school might not be required to offer alternative lunch options everyday. But I really don't think food allergies should be a disability within the meaning of Federal Law, but apparently they think so. It is so frustrating because even though teachers have immunity for actions within their jobs, that ends with gross negligence, which is a jury question, which means any judgment call can be scrutinized in court, which means lawyers and money, which schools try to avoid at all costs, but limiting snacks to packaged foods, individually wrapped means you can even do cupcakes or apples or bananas. It pretty much subjects them to a lot of high fructose corn syrup and junk food unless parents are very picky, which after being so frustrated by all these rules I can see why many would just throw their hands up, or not want to participate. Are they going to have alternate snacks in case a parent brings in snacks with gluten or nuts for those children that can't have them or toss the whole bunch? Because at this point it seems like the school should just start providing snacks. Food allergies are very serious. But at a point all these rules just get to be a little silly. I would say it's all my fault, but I don't practice that type of law
  14. My ambition to bake has well dissipated as my past couple weeks and this week have been so busy at work and on the weekends. I will still be bringing a dessert either homemade, or bought somewhere good nearby. I am also thinking about stopping by the Italian Store to get their antipasta salad and broccoli and tomato salad with blue cheese (although sometimes this is scarce on weekends).
  15. I wondered that same thing. I would not have posted that comment about Trummers.
  16. I'm doing the happy dance, I'm doing the happy dance. Now I just need to hope that my trial goes well.
  17. Dan I might be in, depending when my trial that day lets out, it's in Arlington so as long as it doesn't run late I should be good, unless there is work I need to do for day 2 of trial. Anyone know if the Clarendon location has gluten free flatbreads off the top of their head?
  18. The fridge, cabinets and freezer are excrutiatingly low on supplies right now, so the other night it was Doctor Delivery to the rescue. I wanted Thai or Mexican so I was scoping out the selections for the best options sans gluten. Decided to give El Ranchero a try since it had been a while and the menu clearly stated what had corn tortillas versus flour and a lot of the options were with corn, yay! We put in an order and when it arrived there was a bag of fresh hot corn chips and salsa, which I guess comes with every order. The chips were awesome and the salsa was really spicy, a little chunky and pretty good. A nice unexpected addition. I had one of the specials with a spinach and chicken enchilada and beef chalupa. I really liked the dressed lettuce on the chalupa, I put some on my enchilada, as well. The chalupa had gotten a bit soggy in the delivery on the bottom, but the flavors were still very good. The rice with the enchilada was well seasoned, Hubby thought his was a little underdone, but I liked mine and thought it was just right. Enchilada was good, the sauce needed a little kick, but most places do as many people in this area don't like spice as much as me. I believe it was a Ranchero sauce. But overall really good and they had good packaging for delivery and had everything we ordered which is a plus. Anyway it was good, probably would have been better if you had it at the restaurant. I always love the decor of this place when I go, it is cheesy in a good way.
  19. My Husband likes instant mashed potatoes. Father forgive him, I'm trying- really. And forgive me for making instant grits from time to time, I know they aren't as good, but they are so quick.
  20. Oakland; Wisp; Morgantown, WV Just an update: Firefly farms in Accident, MD is making some really fantastic goat cheese. I had it at the Oakland Farmer's Market, but I believe they have it in Whole Foods in our area. I really like the Merry Go Round myself. You will be able to tour their new facility when it is ready. Also picked up some good no bake cookies at the market. Canoe on the Run continues to be good for soups, salads, sandwiches, breakfast. I had a really nice cobb salad the other day. Was a little miphed with the Mountain State Brewery. We went in after a night at the Haunted Shack and Mountain Coaster at Wisp (totally worth it) and it was after ten and we were going to order flatbreads and a salad for me. The bartender said they only had flatbreads after ten. I let him know I couldn't eat gluten and he just shrugged, offered no solution. I asked if I could get soup, said no. Now this really annoyed me since soup is pre-made for the day, and salad is pretty darn easy to put together and takes no cooking. He didn't even bother to ask the manager if they could accommodate me. My friends were hungry and I didn't want to make a fuss as they were excited for flatbreads, so I ate a snack at our cabin while they had dinner. I should have talked with the manager, but I was just too tired to care. What really offended me was the bartender's attitude he just didn't care. I am sure he will appreciate that we didn't care when we left our tip. Had buckwheat cakes and sausage at Englander's which was awesome as normal. Also had a nice dinner at the Cornish Manor. Pepper steak with cognac sauce, roasted veggies and mashed potatoes. As a note they have a huge selection of gluten free items, pretty much everything on the menu. My steak was cooked to temperature and tasted good, veggies were nice, mashed potatoes weren't my favorite, but they weren't that bad, I am just picky. Free side salad with dinner was good too. The best food all weekend of course was what we cooked ourselves for the Autumn Glory porch party, but I digress.
  21. Happy early Birthday Elyssa! I probably won't get a chance to post tomorrow. Hope you celebrate well. We need to do dinner again here soon.
  22. Went to Eatbar a couple days ago. Had a lavender goat cheese and some charcuterie to start. The cheese was luscious and the pate was excellent. I liked the rillette too, but not as much as the pate which was really great. Then had mussels, some were big and plump, a few were smaller, but overall they were good. Everything was good, happy hour wine deals were great. We could easily find seats. My only qualm with the whole experience is the limited amount of options for eating gluten free. I had looked at the online menu and was set on ordering the steak salad with blue cheese and avacados, and then when I got there it wasn't on the menu and was replaced with a steak sandwich. I wish restaurants would either keep their menus updated so I know where I can eat and where I can't or put a note on there saying it is a sample menu or not current. So I know to call and check. It would be a heavenly dream if they started carrying gluten free buns, but I don't expect that much, just a few options besides a side salad.
  23. Ok, ok really the best croissant? Right down the street from me? And you had to tell me after I am supposed to be cutting gluten out of my diet... This is a big, HUGE, temptation.
