  1. Last night I made pork carnitas for immediate consumption in tacos. I also started a venison vegetable soup that I then put it in the fridge, which I will skim the fat, and finish doctoring it up tonight with some homemade corn bread. We switched to a bottom freezer instead of a side by side for sheer storage capacity, etc. But I have to say, it is so much harder to keep it organized, and I am pretty militant about freezer organization and use, but it is just a lot harder to visually see what I have at all times so I can use it.
  2. So... if you are not using the Wegman's app/website (then it delivers through Instacart) I highly, highly recommend that. You can choose automatic preferred substitutions, or search through their stock when an item is out to choose a replacement. I feel like the search platform is better, as well. Anyway, they both are delivered through Instacart, but I feel like the Wegman's platform is far better.
  3. I was going to order this, save for the fact that I was making roast pork tenderloin for dinner! It was on my list of upcoming next orders, will definitely be so now.
  4. Last night I made a big batch of turkey salsa verde tamales. I had made half of them the day after Thanksgiving, and needed to make the rest. (I learned one can freeze tamale dough- worked great, needed to thin it out a bit once thawed with more broth/water, but worked well). But I snacked as much making them on dolmades, cheese and crackers. I froze a lot of them for later, kept some in the fridge for lunches.
  5. I really like Wegman's ordering app. I have mostly switched from HT to Wegman's on the strength of their ordering system. Some items are a lot more inexpensive than Costco, some items are pricier. The online app certainly doesn't have in store selection, BUT it is pretty darn good.
  6. This is a more of a thing I would do. Guinea pigs are pretty fat already, I wonder what the correct weight/age is on those bad boys. I bet there are a lot of schools that whoever took those home as the class pet for Covid might be really sick of them 🤪 She's got all the tools, and has a small galley kitchen, so she doesn't really need anything more in that dept. I think good olive oil and balsamic might be the win for this year, they went to Italy and Greece as their last two vacations, so that might fit well. Although the home cooking resource page did make me think about doing a big anson mills order and splitting it up amongst my family, I have done that in the past with success. I have a few last things I need to finish off before I order more from them though, but that could be done.
  7. I got an Avenue the other day.. not as good as the 116 or funky cuban, but not bad. Plus you can get so many little quick pre-made add on items, which is nice.
  8. Monterey's gets a lot of credit for keeping us and our neighborhood friends well fed during Covid. It is fast delivery into Potomac Yard, the pizza is better quality than your chain delivery and they are really nice guys.
  9. We get take out from here every now and then because they have spaghetti and meatballs for Hubby, and chicken or eggplant parm for me. Those are our normal comfort food Italian American meals that we want when things go bad. For instance- Max partially tore a muscle the other night- and I had to have a quick popover to the vet, asked Hubby to order something. Not mind blowing, but not bad at all. It's one of those places that if I am working late or stressed out, Hubby can order just knowing what I will eat, and not having to worry about it.
  10. I get the potatoes a lot, the rice if it isn't sold out, or normally the Mixian noodles. The noodles are pretty addictive, I always think I will not finish the whole bowl, and then I do... oopsies. It isn't the most authentic Yunnanese food, but it's right by my office and I have gotten everyone on board with it, and it's nice to have noodle bowls every now and then.
  11. Ok, so my SIL is on the verge of being a cool foodie. She likes good food, she eats at good restaurants, he is a good home cook, she bakes on occasion, but she wants to take her cooking to the next level. She asked me to get her some cool food items for Christmas. My struggle is 3 fold- 1. they are in Richmond and I am not sure when we will get down to see them. So no goods that need refrigerated. 2. where I can get some cool food items without really going into a bunch of stores. But still support small if possible. (I went to Russian Gourmet the other day and was the only person in there) 3. what are things someone else would find interesting. I am on the level where I find pigs feet and ears interesting. But I know she isn't there. So I am trying to think of things that would be for a solid cook who wants to branch out a little. They don't eat super spicy food, so I can't get her angry grandma chili oil and gochujang. I have bought her some things from Penzey's because good spices make all the difference. I also got her some dulce de leche in a can, and some rose water from the Russian Gourmet. I thought about miso, but am thinking that would need to be refridgerated, and honestly you can get that at most grocery stores these days. Any ideas? Anything I don't get her now I could get her later. This could be an ongoing thing.
  12. We have gotten take out from the Taq a few times during Covid. I want to get their nacho kit. But the other day, while it wasn't quite so cold yet, I ate outside at Harrison St and got three crispy tacos. Man it was good to have someone else cook for me, and to eat it hot and fresh.
  13. I drove through Arlington the other day, and stopped at my tailors shop- I don't know how long he is going to make it, I feel so bad. He is right beside Caribbean Grill. I decided to spread some love around and got their family meal for take out- cuban rice, fried yuca, plantains. I also got some Saltenas. They had so many saltenas compared to the past. I should have just gotten a WHOLE bunch of saltenas. I love these bad boys. I wonder if they freeze them before they bake them. I would buy frozen ones from them... I should ask next time. By the time we had it, I had to reheat the plantains, and they were a little dry. Otherwise everything else was good. Should have gotten extra yellow sauce.
  14. Last night was pork tenderloin with apricot jam glaze, mashed potatoes, brussels with lemon and feta, and leftover green beans. I still have another pork loin, as it was a 2 pack, and am going to make carnitas with it tonight. I have been making Hubby use the grill frequently, it gives us both something to do.
  15. Some ideas for your kale you may already have, but... I make a stew with sausage, kale and white beans- easy to find recipes for this online that is really good. Or similarly, you can do pasta with kale, sausage with a garlic, white wine, butter/olive oil sauce that is very good. I also make a kale mac and cheese (I make a weird version to keep it lactose free, but I am sure there are normal versions that are also easy to find.) I also like adding kale to a pot of greens. I also like it when massaged and then chopped into really thin ribbons with Caesar dressing and lots of parm. This week has been dumplings that I made over the weekend- stuffed with shrimp, cabbage, scallion, garlic, ginger. And jacked up packaged soy ramen with soft boiled eggs, baby bok choy, miso, chili oil and whatever meat I have leftover in the fridge.
  16. So... not far from Deep Creek, but on a different grid- you might check out Ohiopyle area, lovely mountains and options with good wifi (we used OVR locations with good wifi). Also the Canaan Valley area is amazing, the house rentals there aren't as nice as DCL, but lots with internet options, and the hiking is phenomenal. I love Seneca Rocks, but less good wifi down there. You might think about places near Lost River too. Also, consider staying in Oakland/Mountain Lake Park instead of DCL, if there are any places available, if you don't mind being in a small town. Hope you have found somewhere good. If you book something in one of these areas, I can give you recs.
  17. I was on a cookie streak- chocolate chip oatmeal, ginger apricot, apple butter... I got over my hand pie streak, although it is sounding pretty good, I might go back on that bender, but they kept oozing. I also just bought a stick of pepperoni to make pepperoni rolls, which is good because I have a lot of whole wheat flour I need to use. Our previous law firm had what would be a very unexpected amount of sugar left in their kitchen, so now I have several pounds of sugar, and the possibilities are endless.
  18. Good to know, I have been craving some food from them, almost stopped after a doctors appointment the other day. Now I will make a trip out there for some pick up!
  19. Well last week we managed a little getaway up to Ohiopyle for some hiking/biking really just to be in a different view and frame of mind, as Matt and I could work remotely for a week. I made some big batches of things before we left: Tamales- turkey adobo and veggie- with black beans, spinach, cheese, salsa verde. Dal Makhani (I make big batches of this and freeze big portions) Both things I took up with us along with extra turkey adobo that we used in burritos. This week I made pork chops that I brined, then Hubby smoked. Served with farro cooked in veggie broth and a big pot of sauteed apple, leek, fennel, a little red onion to which I added white wine, butter, mustard. White German sausages (we really like these with mustard, relish and mumbo sauce), cucumber tomato salad and white beans cooked with rosemary. Shrimp curry with homemade yellow curry paste, and cherry tomatoes, curried potato and peas, rice, dal. I warmed up some frozen rotis to go with. I also made some jacked up ramen tonight. I had leftover miso soup, to which I added some water and cooked some baby bok choy in this broth and then cooked some packaged soy ramen with the broth packet. In the bowl I had turkey adobo, kimchi, soft boiled egg. Combined these two together in the bowl for a very tasty meal. I may have microwaved some smores this week, as the campfires I had envisioned the week before didn't really pan out... best laid plans and all.
  20. Have you thought about using one of the swirly baskets? They make shaping easier? I have made- cherry hand pies, peach/ginger upside down cake, lots of cookie varieties, tonight I just made peach coffee cake muffins in the last 2-3 weeks.
  21. Whew- long time no chat... if you all have been wondering where I have been, I will give you a small clue. More to come on all that. Poor hubby had lots of late nights order pizza, popeyes, cava and souvlaki bar. Tonight was penne with homemade marinara and chicken sausage from Stachowskis. Last night was jacked up ramen with soft boiled eggs, seaweed and a little gochujang. The night before spaghetti with pesto, green beans, corn and shredded chicken. Some other recent meals: Charleston gold rice with potlicker from greens made into risotto, roasted corn, okra, eggplant with shredded chicken over rice, dal makhani with rice and roti, chicken curry leftover dal, more roti, cedar plank salmon with caesar salad. Lots of tacos/burritos- (steak, bean, chicken, veggie).
  22. The girls have such long hair, they look like they had a nice time, despite all that. Did you feel like there were a lot of people there, or did it feel safe-ish?
  23. Aww man, Hunan Gate was firing on all cylinders for take out on Sunday night. It may have been one of the best take out meals I have had from there. We got hand pulled noodles with meat sauce, Szechuan string beans, dumpling with pork and sour napa, and cumin lamb. The dumplings have a decidedly thick skin, they aren't the best dumpling wrappers, but I really like the sour napa filling and the slightly sour flavor really balanced the meal as a whole. I should learn how to make these. The cumin lamb was excellent, the hand pulled noodle sauce was really good and these noodles are kind of thick with some chew, but nicely cooked and balanced out the decidedly spicy string beans (very good, but def spicy- lived up to their namesake), and mala of the cumin lamb. Everything was super hot and fresh. The lovely lady who manages the place remembered me when I called to place my order, and said she had missed us. We miss Hunan Gate, as well. This might be one of the places we miss the most from our former address.
  24. Just had Al's for lunch, as I had never eaten there. I got the mushrooms, grn pepper and steak sandwich with onion rings. I got the sandwich sans tomato. I thought this was pretty good. I don't know that it needs the mayo, although I decidedly like mayo. The meat isn't super beefy, but I don't think it is bad either. I think it is definitely Steak and Cheese category, not Cheesesteak, but as I am not a huge seeker of cheesesteaks, it suits my tastes just fine. I saved half for later, as it is a big sandwich and I got onion rings.
