  1. I feel the same way I did after I got a (bogus ) parking ticket in DC. Money out the window without immediate return, but maybe in the grand scheme of things it went toward something good (i.e. infrastructure repair). This is the same thing. Maybe a few people learned something after reading one of Joel's editorials, and made different choices as a result.
  2. Now, the Foodshed website has vanished altogether and they took down their Facebook page. If they were really a nonprofit doing work for local and sustainable food, I wouldn't feel bad about not getting the magazine (and I did pay for 2 years and only received 1 issue). But now, who knows where Foodshed or our money went. Pffft.
  3. Be sure to check out the new Lorton market on Sundays from 9 to 1, through October 25. It's a beautiful setting, behind the shops on Lorton Station Blvd in the VRE parking lot. The Washington Post "All We Can Eat" blog gave props for "most photogenic" market! Here's the link: All We Can Eat article The quality is top notch and there is a great mix of vendors; listed below are just their primary offerings (many of the vendors are quite diverse, and products change with seasonality): Kuhn Orchards: fruit Ingleside Nurseries: outdoor plants Patty Bakes: sweet baked goods Garner's Produce: vegetables Cibola Farms: buffalo and pork products Pleasant Fields Farm: vegetables Sharkawi Farms: herbal tisanes and dried herbs Mt. Olympus Berry Farm: vegetables and berries Crackpot Gourmet: preserves and savory cooking sauces Toigo Orchards: fruits, vegetables, jarred items Laurel Grove Farm: vegetables Swiss Bakery: breads, baked goods Middleburg Creamery: ice cream Does this sound like a sales pitch? I guess it is. I've been privileged to be the volunteer market master for this brand new market. It has been a wonderful experience working with these dedicated folks who work so hard and take such pride in what they bring to market. So, any chance I get, I'd like to get the word out...please stop by, say hello, and support these local vendors (they're all from within a 125 mile radius of Fairfax County).
  4. Hello...my name is Sue and I'm happy to be a part of this community. So far, I've managed just a quick perusal of a few boards, but I'm already very impressed the varied backgrounds and experiences that everyone brings to the table. I'm not a food professional...just your typical home cook who loves fine food, wine and dining experiences. Like many here, I'm very passionate about local and sustainable agriculture. I'll only eat meat if I know and approve of its source. This year, we've gotten a new Fairfax County farmer's market under way in Lorton, and I'm the volunteer market master. It's every Sunday from 9 to 1 at the Lorton VRE station parking lot. We have produce (of course!), meats, baked goods, prepared foods, preserves, teas/herbs, ice cream and landscape plants. The quality is amazing. What a pleasure and a privilege it's been to work with these producers.
