  1. I was there at 3pm on a September Saturday afternoon and expected the place to be empty. However there were in fact other diners having a late lunch and the servers were friendly and quick and there was lively Cajun music in the background. Looking around, it looked like the po' boy sandwiches were very popular. Its a comfortable place to eat just a block down from the Old Town shopping area. Plenty of Abita beer varieties are available but I went with the house merlot which was surprisingly good and served at just the right temperature. The fried oyster bowl appetizer was well prepared and came with a tasty dipping sauce though oysters are presumably small this time of year. I thought about the red beans and rice but wanted to avoid sausage so went with the seafood gumbo which was a full portion and had all the right ingredients but was alittle salty for my taste. Unless its somehow unavoidable, I can't understand why a chef would choose to go heavy on the salt given that diners can always add salt if needed. It came with fresh bread and bland potato salad. The beignets are the real deal -- just like the ones you'd get at Cafe du Monde in Jackson Square except with less powdered sugar. Next time I go I'll just ask that they go heavy on the powdered sugar and it will be perfect.
  2. Captain Bill's, and the Sanitary Fish Market, are 2 landmark restaurants in Morehead City NC. They've both been around awhile, they're both on the waterfront, and they both have friendly staff. Captain Bill's has a window where you can ice cream to go and that looked popular. I ate at both restaurants and though they both are probably ok for an economical, super casual lunch spot, I suggest that if you walk around you could definitely do alot better.
  3. Spouter Inn is on the waterfront in Beaufort NC and is a good place to relax on the outdoor deck and watch the boats go by. Its quiet, with a long view of a nature preserve across the water and Fort Macon in the distance. We had the prime rib and the scallop entrees which were ok, meaning not the best ever but I'd do it again. The staff was very friendly and did not rush us off, so we could enjoy our beer and wine and the peaceful view. Their chocolate cream pie was very fresh though not as sweet as I'd prefer. The restaurant is on the main waterfront street so perfect for walking off a nice meal. Pay a dollar at the Visitor Center for a map of the Old Burying Ground, there's some neat stories there.
  4. If you're around Morehead City, NC, I recommend Miss Holly's ice cream shop in Newport NC. Its about 20 minutes west of town and sits almost all alone on the outskirts of Newport. The ice cream is fine but the real reason to go is Miss Holly who has made herself a fun little shop with lots of games and 50's music where all the neighborhood kids know her by name. She's super nice and we had fun playing checkers and people-watching. Go around 3-4pm after school lets out -- reminds me alittle of Mayberry R.F.D.
  5. Morgan's Tavern in New Bern, NC has good food and reasonable prices. I was there on a Thursday evening and the place was full even though the town seemed deserted. A decent assortment of draft beers were $2/each from 4-7pm and the salmon entree and smores dessert were both great. The restaurant is in the tiny "downtown" area and within walking distance of many neat looking, historic buildings including the Pepsi birthplace. A colorful ice cream place called Cow Cafe is around the corner and also worth a visit.
  6. I highly recommend Ronald's Donuts on Spring Mountain Road. Its in a small strip mall about 3 miles off the strip and the doughnuts were very good and they had a decent variety. I got a dozen and they were just as good on day 2.
  7. I had 2 very good dinners at Rosemary's restaurant last month. Its about 5 miles West of the Strip so you need a car. I went online and bought 2 $50 gift certificates from COSTCO for $80. Also, Wednesday nights all the ladies get 50% off their tab. Anyway, I can highly recommend the BBQ shrimp appetizer, the wilted spinach & goat cheese salad, the halibut entree w/sauteed spinach, and the rack of lamb. Attire was generally business casual i.e. no shorts or tees. Service was excellent.
  8. The doughnuts at Minit Market on 32nd street/Coastal Hwy are excellent. They're around $.90 each and $8/dozen. I liked them so much I bought a dozen but there not very good the second day. Good variety and worth a try if you're looking for an alternative to Fractured Prune.
  9. I had 2 excellent dinners at the Captain's Table last weekend. Its in a beachfront Marriott hotel on 15th street and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I don't think there's any real connection to the old Captain's Table other than the name. Both nights I had the $28 salmon dinner with sauteed spinach. I chose the baked sweet potato and green beans as my sides. The portions were good and everything was cooked perfectly. They also have very good fresh bread. I tried the fried oyster appetizer which wasn't great mainly because of the oysters being so small. We were immediately seated both nights with no reservations. However, if you get there and have to wait there are televisions and computers there in the lobby to kill some time, or you could sit on the boardwalk. I'm adding this place to my list of OC favorites along with Fish Tales and the Shark on the Harbor.
  10. Lewes The Surfing Crab at 16723 Coastal Highway, just north of Lewes, is a friendly place worth checking out. I ate at the bar there last weekend and had a good $15 grilled tuna caesar salad. Good sized portion, fresh ingredients, I'd go back. They also were offering Smith Island cake which was chocolate cake with white frosting and that was a winner also. The big draw seems to be their all you can eat crab dinner. Its a casual place with picnic tables in a very clean air conditioned space.
  11. I've been to the Falls Church location many times and have never been disappointed. Granted my expectations are low since I have them in the pub food category, but the food (pizza, sandwiches, salads, fish) and the service have always been good. I'm a lager fan so am generally not crazy about their beers but can always find something.
