Hat Trick (4/123)

  1. This place has been under the radar for many years - I have lived a few blocks away for years and did not go in until late last year. As soon as I did, I knew it was only a matter of time before it was "discovered." I have only gone in the evening and have found it not too crowded but always well stocked. The owner is quite the salesman and always friendly. I can say without hyperbole that the crabcakes are some of the best I have ever had. So good, in fact, that I rarely get anything else. The mango sauce is also quite good - I tend to save any leftovers to put on sandwiches the next day. I've also had fried oysters and most of the sides, which are all solid and taste like homemade. But seriously, get the crab cakes! I hope that the new interest in this place will help them survive the influx of new hipster restaurants and bars that must be driving up rents along that stretch of Georgia.
  2. My boyfriend and I had dinner and beers there last night. The staff were super-friendly, beer selection was great, and the shuffleboard table downstairs was a lot of fun. The food was better than your average bar food, but not as good or creative as Commonwealth. The fries were awesome, but the beer-battered onion rings and catfish were both rather soggy. The overall vibe was a little older and more mellow than the Wonderland, although we also left by 9 so maybe it gets rowdier later. We'll be back for sure!!
  3. Udupi has been a family favorite for years - and has never disappointed. I love the coconut chutney and sambar that come with all the dosas and other pancakes, plus they have uttapams (thicker, steamed pancakes made of rice? flour), which are much harder to find than dosas. They also have a case full of Indian sweets out front that you can take home. If you are in the neighborhood I also recommend the Indian grocery store in the next strip mall down. The store is a bit small, but the father and son that work there are super-friendly and they have homemade samosas and meat patties
