  1. Interesting! Their website is very out of date (2013) so no mention of the bar menu there but they did list a "surprise 5 course chef's menu" for $70. We've only been to Corduroy once since they moved! it's just enough out of the way for us now that it completely fell out of rotation. Thanks!
  2. BL-4th grader has decided his goal in life is to have dinner at Victoria and Albert's at Disney World. But before I commit to that with him (and I have some time as he has to be 10), I thought I might start him off with something local, smaller and less expensive. And where an enthusiastic 9 year old foodie would be welcomed at 5 pm seating. Mr. BLB hates, hates, hates everything about tasting menus so I've let all the options completely fall of my radar. I'm probably willing to spend $100-ish per person. Suggestions?
  3. I think they are homemade and I don't know if they are baked or fried. I think they "rice" the potatoes to make them and they lean closer to good than gross. I should have subbed a green veggie of some sort but BL-4th grader had promised me the Brussel sprouts from his TV dinner (which were underdone and inedible) so I went with comfort food instead. If anyone is keeping track, the Downtown Crown area has 3 edible choices in my opinion. Chop't, Coastal Flats and Ted's Montana Grill. The 9 year old would add La Madeline, Ted's Bulletin and Pour House.
  4. Yes. The 9 year old loves it. I'm over it but the lure of the Thursday night TV dinner special wins out once in a while. The steak was fine. The tater tots were okay and were an upcharge over the french fries.
  5. Not in Arlington or in Virginia either. But yes, a favored spot of the almost 4th grader. (Where did the time go?????)
  6. Mussels are one of my favorites but I never cook them at home The last time I ordered them out 20 percent of the mussels in my bowl were closed. Which seemed to be a high percentage. What percentage do you expect to have not open when you cook them? Thanks!
  7. Bingo! We really like the smoked salmon Benedict. The service is so so.
  8. No to both. But owned by a corporation is on the right track. (Salmon...)
  9. Still nope. A few clues: In Montgomery County. All 3 of us had the same dish.
  10. So we're doing it again. Both ways this time! The plan so far--Mike's American Grill for brunch before boarding, possibly with a stop at the nearby (ish?) Wegmans. Bringing booze, a mini cooler for cold cuts and yogurt and our pillows. Heading back we are thinking about Hollerbach's for lunch and whatever food we didn't finish at the beach in the cooler.
  11. Mr. BLB has discovered that instead of buying a baseball ticket in order to get his beloved Italian Hero, he can order ahead, hop on the green line and be back at his desk in less than an hour. He ordered two and brought one home for me. And I think it is even better the next day. I had half for breakfast and then foolishly shared the second half with Mr. BLB... Now we are looking at maps and calculating times and trying to figure out how to make this a stop before either of our summer road trips.
  12. We ended up here after an outing last weekend. Our original plan had been Sugo but they had no working a/c. Faced with walking next door v. walking across the parking lot to Elevation, we picked next door. And had a perfectly benign meal. BL-4th grader will tell you the smoked salmon deviled eggs were excellent and his pot pie was rich and tasty. I would say my pot roast was a couple steps above cafeteria pot roast but unmemorable. I can't remember what Mr. BLB had but he though it was fine. His cocktail was too sweet in my estimation. Will we go back? Not until we face a similar situation and next time, I'd probably remember Brooklyn Deli is right around the corner.
  13. Cheeburger's burgers are forgettable but the onion rings are quite lovely. And having a krispy kreme just across the street from the pediatrician comes in handy on those days when a vaccine is due. Beyond that, it is pretty meh.
  14. While Mr. BLB and I were watching tv the other night, a commercial for Subway came on. I turned to him and asked, "Do you know what I've been thinking about?" Mr. BLB, "That sandwich at the ballgame? Me too." And while his office is right around the corner from the ballpark, it did seem a bit much to buy a ticket to just get a sandwich. But I am in the midst of a huge work project that had me in the city all day Saturday and I discovered that you can order online from G Sandwich and specify a pick up time. I was in and out in less than 2 minutes. We ordered --two Italian heroes, a turkey and a spring lamb. BL-3rd grader claims not to have liked the turkey but he ate 70 percent of it and that was after having a burger at 4 pm... The Italian Hero was just as we both remembered it at the ballpark minus about a pound of mayo. The spring lamb may have suffered from sitting in the fridge overnight... It is entirely possible I will be making this exact same detour again on Saturday as my penance for working another weekend...
  15. We sat in 131 for the Cardinals game a few weeks back. BL-3rd grader had random hot dogs and then truly awful nachos from the Nacho stand right by our seats. Mr. BLB and I had the Italian sub and the Chicken Parm sub from G Sandwiches. The Chicken Parm was seriously overcooked and dry, dry, dry. In contrast the Italian sub was drenched and dripping in mayo. My teeth squeaked biting into it. I'm not quite sure WHY i thought the chicken parm was a good idea in 100 degree heat. Mr. BLB spent a good inning mumbling about the fried bologna sandwich and the cruelty of the world. BLB-3rd grader saw his first grand slam and his first Nats win (also his first Cardinals loss...) We'll be heading up the Frederick Keys for the rest of the season though.
  16. BL-3rd grader and I had breakfast at Summerhouse in North Bethesda before his Sunday School class. We learned that you can't serve booze before 10 am in MoCo. We also received two different sets of silverware with dried spinach bonded to the forks. I didn't try his housemade sausage but he loved it. He was less enthused by the waffle. The poached eggs with smoked salmon I had was perfectly fine. Mr. BLB also "remembered" that he booked the Grill Room for dinner. Had he truly done it so far in advance he had forgotten or was this a face saving measure? I don't know. We ended up at a table next to someone I know from work and I got to bounce their newborn so the mom could finish her dinner. BL-3rd grader had a lentil soup with a poached egg that he ate all of. I had the gnocchi which was everything I love about Frank Ruta. For my main, I ordered a lamb dish but had to trade with BL-3rd grader when he didn't like the classic burger. Since I had insisted he order it, it was only fair. I actually think he wasn't that hungry as much of the lamb came home and was my lunch the next day. It worked out but I will be making my own reservations far in advance next year.
  17. So... Let's say that your only request when you and your spouse discussed Mother's Day several months ago was that you weren't the one who had to make the reservations and that we weren't deciding things at the last minute. And that today your spouse texted you to ask what you wanted to do and seemed to have no recollection of the previous conversation despite taking notes on his phone during said previous conversation. Is there anyplace I can go with the BL-3rd grader for a nice brunch on Mother Day? I just want some eggs florentine and not to have to pick up the phone to make the reservation--Bethesda, Rockville, North Potomac, etc. Money is no object as long as they take Amex. I have the spouse's Amex. (Yes, I'm bitter...)
  18. I love the history that you see in these old threads.
  19. I was surprised to see the Inn is now on OpenTable. I was even more surprised to see how much availability there was. I was excited until I remembered my husband hates tasting menus and the expense would equal our dining budget for nearly a year... Sigh...
