  1. Went here last night for takeout after my daughter's swim practice at GP.  I got the the shawarma platter, wife and daughter got falafel sandwiches.  While as Daniel points out, it's not unlimited salads, the volume of salad provided in the platter was more than enough.  I thought the shawarma was well spiced, and there was a lot of it.  It was accompanied by a soft and pillowy pita.  They had three types of schug, all of which were very tasty.  I had it topped with amba and tahini.  Wife and daughter really enjoyed their falafel sandwiches as well with daughter exclaiming that it was moist and not dried out as she is typically accustomed to.  She also enjoyed the flavor (I didn't get to try any).  The sandwich was overstuffed and even though she had just "swam 10-50's" as a part of her swim practice, she wasn't able to finish it.  All of the entrees allow you to get a pita, laffa, or platter.  The staff was very nice and accommodating.  Will definitely be back.

  2. Happened to be in the vicinity yesterday and therefore stopped by.  The market has now been remodeled and taken over the restaurant space.   They still have kabobs to go at a counter, but no longer ear-in tables.  The market is now bigger and not cramped like before.  It is a nice refresh and makes for a better shopping experience.

  3. Sad news ... Max's is closing on 7/28/2022.

"We have had the privilege to serve the community since 1994 when we opened Max’s. Our falafel and shawarma turned us into a popular destination and gave us opportunities at FedEx Field and Nat’s Park. With much sadness, we are closing Max’s and our last day of business will be July 28, 2022.

We want to thank everyone for their patronage over the last 28 years. We have been extremely lucky to have such a long history of serving the community and very grateful for the opportunity. We have worked tirelessly over the past few years to move Max’s. We were given the opportunity to move closer to the community however, due to conditions beyond our control, we are not able to relocate. If the right opportunity arose, we would welcome the idea of reopening. Max, Larry, and Justin Dekelbaum"

We got carryout from Frank Pepe in Danbury CT on Monday, and were very happy with the result. I've never been to the original in New Haven, and would have been disappointed had I gone there and gotten this, but for suburban, chain, strip-mall pizza - even with such a big name - it was very good road food (and indeed, we devoured it on the way home from Connecticut).

A Medium (16") White Clam Pizza ($27.75) with Fresh Clams (not in shell, though a couple small bits of shell were found), Grated Pecorino Romano, [lots of] Garlic, [lots of] Oregano & Olive Oil was pre-sliced, salty, rife with clams, and enjoyed during a 6-7 hour car ride, as well as for lunch the next day.

The only other White Clam Pizza I've ever tried was at Matthew's in Baltimore, and this was completely different as Pepe's crust is thin and well-charred; Matthew's is its own creature, having a thick crust (Pepe's is thin, and somewhat charred) and being extremely filling. The two couldn't be more different, but both are worth trying, albeit perhaps secondary to their tomato pies.

Had the clam at Montgomery Mall last week.  Clams appeared to be canned and were a huge disappointment.  We were happy with the other pie we ordered though.  I meant to ask if canned clams was temporary or what they plan on using full-time.  If fresh, I would give the clam another shot.  As far as eating in, we arrived early around 5:30 and were seating immediately.  There was a short wait by the time we left.  The big story is the volume of carry-out orders they have been receiving.  Evidently it is off the hook and the wait can be over an hour at peak times.  Not sure how well it travels, as the two times I have been there we ate there.  First time was a medium pie for my daughter and myself (half plain and half with black olives).  It was really good, nice crust, nice char, and good flavor.  The medium was really too much for the two of us, although I powered through it.  Second time was with wife included.  This time we got two smalls--the aforementioned clam (with canned clams) and the other was again half plain and half black olive.  We finished both, but it was the right amount.  As mentioned previously, the winner was the half plain/half black olive.

Went to Kossar's in LES this past weekend.  A bialy with scallion cream cheese is now $5.  I don't think it was worth $5.  It was a generous amount of cream cheese, too much than needed really.  My jaws did feel tired from chewing too.

Pretty sure Kossar's is under new ownership and not the same as when it was a burnt out storefront.  Not sure if this has had any effect on their product.  It looks like it was cleaned up and has a much broader menu.

Sunday we had some folks over for food and post-Christmas Christmas celebration. I am done cooking big meals for a little while after the holidays. So, off to Litteri for the 3 foot Italian sub! A big success. Also, leftovers. Been eating this for lunch all week. (Served with chips and dip. A total junk food meal. Good homemade cookies and strudel for dessert though!)

This post reminds me of the Simpson's episode with the 6 Foot sub!  Ha Ha!

My husband is a chocolate milk (and milk in general but especially chocolate) fiend, and I'm planning to sign up for regular chocolate milk delivery from SMC as part of my Christmas presents to him. They have a Moo Membership where you pay $100 for a year and get free delivery (amongst other perks, I think), but they only sell it in December and June. We recently bought a quart of their chocolate milk at Moo Thru and it was delicious. Also, gingerbread ice cream sounds sooooo good. My ice cream maker is still on my counter because I was thinking of finding a recipe and trying to make it myself.

If you visit, ask to see the brown cows that make the chocolate milk and the pink cows that make the strawberry.

  8. This restaurant which was open since 1985 (assuming it should have also been on the longest open restaurants list) is now closed per the announcement on their website.  Not sure if it was the pandemic that caused it, but I am sure it contributed.  The main menu here was always pretty solid.  I know they used to get a bunch of Korean tour groups through for meals while visiting DC, the loss of that business probably hurt.  Their other locations are two stalls at the nearby Lotte Market: Aery and Ichiban Mikoshi Sushi.  Neither have the same quality as the original.

I wanted to like this place. At least, I love southeast Asian street food. But when I saw the menu I knew it wasn’t going to be great. A mishmash of Korean, Singaporean, Japanese Chinese etc. No rendang :(

as feared, everything was a dumbed-down version. Papaya salad with no kick, terrible (inedible) Szechuan wontons...skewers were fine, as were summer rolls. But, as feared, if you want good Asian food you still need to pay top dollar at Q, or head on up to Rockville...

I agree with your assessment.  Mediocre at best.

  10. Picked up a pie from here on Monday for the first time.  First, kudos, to the most contactless pickup I have seen yet.  You walk up, show them your order on your phone through the window, then they place it on a table by the side door--very good system.

As far as the pie is concerned, it was great and definitely the closest to NY style pizza I have had in the area.  Cheese, sauce, crust, it had it all going on.
