  1. Thanks for that, but I don't see anything about Raw Milk there. But since my last post, I spoke with a neighbor and learned about Meadowbreeze Farms. I just posted about it on another thread, called A Raw Deal (but not sure how to reference that other thread here, so I'm copying what I wrote): ... Meadowbreeze Farms ... offers raw milk products, including raw goat milk, cow milk, kefir, yogurt and even raw milk butter - and this stuff is local. They also offer tons of other local produce, meat, eggs and even some naturally prepared food items. The downside is that they only deliver once every other week, but there are lots of convenient pickup locations all around the DC area. I just put my order in and am going to pick up on 12/9.
  2. Yes, I know the previous post was quite old, but was hoping that someone may be planning to reorder some of this butter. But since then, I learned about Meadowbreeze Farms, which offers raw milk products, including raw goat milk, cow milk, Kefir, yogurt and even raw milk butter - and this stuff is local. They also offer tons of other local produce, meat, eggs and even some naturally prepared food items. The downside is that they only deliver once every other week, but there are lots of convenient pickup locations all around the DC area. I just put my order in and am going to pick up on 12/9.
  3. I understand that it's illegal to sell raw milk in VA, but that you can get it through cow-share and herd-share agreements (which are Illegal in MD, but legal in VA). Apparently many of these cow-share programs deliver the milk to your door. Anyone know of any places that do this that might deliver to Arlington? Thanks, Nevra
  4. I'm a little late here, but am surprised no one mentioned Heidelberg Pastry Shoppe in Arlington. They specialize in German breads. They use tons of whole grains and seeds and even use imported German flour. They list their breads on their website. To me, the HPS breads taste so much better than the breads you find at Whole Foods. I think their 6-grain bread is a good one to start with. Other favorites of mine are Krautiner, Aachener Brot, and Pumpernickel. All their breads can last for almost a week - especially if you buy it unsliced and just slice it right before you use it. If you're more into French bread, I think the baguettes and croissants at Patisserie Poupon are as close to authentic as you'll get in the US.
  5. Hello everyone! Thanks to Jason for turning me on to this site after I lost faith in Yelp. My name is Nevra - it's a Turkish name. I grew up in Sonoma County where we raised various animals and grew a lot of our food, including artichokes, pomagranates, quince, asian pears, persimmons, guava, and figs. My mother used to pick the petals from the damask roses and use them to make the syrup for baklava. And shed stuff grape leaves from the yard with meat or rice for her dolmas. The Joy of Cooking was the first grown-up book I ever read - and loved! I also love: - Charlie Trotter, Jamie Oliver, Michael Pollan and Joel Salatin - When meat is more of an accent ingredient than the main ingreident in the dish - Always having home-made chicken stock in my freezer - Courthouse and Dupont farmer's markets - Turning people on to new foods, or foods they thought they didnt like - Food from around the world, breads and pastries from Germany/Austria, wine from CA/OR/WA and Italy - Composting My pet peeves: - Tasting sugar where it doesnt belong (bread, soups, its even in the pizza they serve at my local Whole Foods yuck!) - High fructose corn syrup - Hydrogenated oils - American Nutella (I buy the real deal from The Italian Store) - Butter that isnt cultured - Corn-fed ruminant meat (beef/lamb/goat) - Fad diets (Atkins, South Beach, low-fat, etc) or any food product that makes health claims - Big food lobbies What do I do for a living? I sell data mining software, naturally. ;-) Happy to be a part of this community.
