  1. Perhaps telling that there are no posts on Kaz in over a year. I've been a couple times in the past year for lunch and didn't feel there was anything worth writing up, but our experience today at lunch has sealed that it was our last visit.

First, the sushi and beef teriyaki bento box is not beef teriyaki, it is gyudon with the beef in a separate compartment from the rice, so technically not gyudon, but definitely not what I would consider teriyaki style. They were clearly to lazy to mix the meat while cooking because mine was in a big clump from when it was probably frozen and thrown into the pot to cook. Lettuce in the salad was definitely approaching its use by date.

The reason why we will not be going back was my daughter's sushi and sashimi bento which was ordered without wasabi. The waitress seemed to think it was just the extra order of ikura that we wanted w/o wasabi. She took the bento back and brought it back out with the same fish, with the wasabi scraped off. My daughter ate the salmon and could tell immediately there was wasabi. We checked the ebi and could see the traces of wasabi still on the underside of the shrimp. At this point my daughter had eaten two pieces with wasabi and was nearly in tears since we did make her swallow the tuna that had a full dose of wasabi rather than spit it out in the middle of a restaurant. They finally brought out four new pieces, though we had to convince them she should get a replacement tuna, the first piece she ate. Apparently they felt since it had been eaten, it didn't need to be replaced, though in reality they had no plan to replace the other pieces either.

So much going on wrong here I'm still angry.

Nooooo. I've been there on several date nights with my husband and have been meaning to go back. Maybe it's time to bring the 5-year-old along. I know they have a kids menu....

We used to take the kids all the time to Dino's in Cleveland Park. Was a great deal when our then 2 and 4 year olds could eat for $6 total. Have only been to the Grotto once since they moved. If we're going to fight for parking down in the U St./Shaw area, we usually end up at Izakaya Seki.

Thanks for this well-informed post, dinoue. I don't want to put words in your mouth, but I have a question: Can you speculate *why* the delivery services choose not to deliver there? And when I say "the delivery services," do I mean all of them? One or two?

The obvious answer is the unspoken answer, but is it the correct answer?

Honestly, I can't speak for the decsionmakers. I'm sure stereotypes play a role whether it be the perceived lack of interest, not wanting to serve because they think tips won't be good, or the market just hasn't reached critical mass of white gentrification yet to make the "business model" work.

The thing with at least some of the delivery services, is that they charge delivery fees based on distance, so I would think that it shouldn't matter how far the delivery is.

  4. As a former resident of Ward 7, and ANC commissioner, I'm probably the most qualified to speak to this thread. First, there is a definite problem with a lack of restaurants east of the river. There was actual excitement when Denny's opened near the corner of Benning and East Capitol.  The only restaurant we ever went to in our own neighborhood was Rosebud's BBQ just across Eastern Ave in Cap Heights. Things are worse now that I heard the Seat Pleasant Safeway closed. It truly is a food desert.

That said, even though we lived at the easternmost corner of DC, where Central Ave crosses over into MD, we could be on H St or Capitol Hill in 15 minutes, or less. Neighborhood dining for us was Granville Moore's and Argonaut on H St. The bridges do not pose any barrier to traffic and crossing the Anacostia is not the same as crossing the Potomac into Virginia, plus there is no change in jurisdiction. Does Rock Creek Park pose a similar barrier to deliveries within the District? I think that would be the better comparison.

True there may be less demand for delivery EOTR, but for delivery service, it doesn't matter if there is less demand for whether the service is offered. There is no additional investment required to provide delivery service EOTR. Same vehicles and drivers are used, it's just adding another area they have to go to. It's just that right now the delivery services choose NOT to serve these areas.

I'm also looking forward to checking them out when they reopen. We moved to Silver Spring not too long before the fire, and we tried to go to Quarry House in their Piratz Tavern incarnation, but they didn't have highchairs, and my daughter was too little then for a booster seat. Now she can sit in a regular chair and I want some greasy bar food!

That's why we used to carry one of these around in the car, though we only used it in a restaurant two times. More often it was used for visiting friends/family or at home when the number of kids exceeded the number of high chairs.

I went here last night. Definitely hipster/upscale Korean.

They specialize in customizable bowls of bibimbap. Also serve Ssam but my spicy pork belly was dried out and not fun to eat whike the dolsot (hot stone bowl) bibimbap was delicious.  We also had korean fried wings, scallion pancakes (pajeon) and mandu.

They also serve great soju cocktails and house infused soju. They also have this amazing desert with house fried potato chips, honey butterscotch sauce and ice cream.

I think the reason we didn't really go back was, as Soapy notes, it's kind of hipster with lots of cocktails and we're not big drinkers. Something like this would have done much better closer to DTSS. We were waiting for our movie showtime the other night and did actually want to get drinks but realized there really isn't anything there except Dave and Busters and McGinty's. We ended up at Lincoln BBQ.

Maybe this would have survived in a couple years once the large apartment buildings closer to that area are completed.

Absolutely no reason to view this as anything other than damage control after the same restaurant group did the same thing on the same block at Masa 14 two years ago, saying at the time "we are committed to our values of inclusiveness"

Bouncers have to be getting their direction from someone. I doubt the bouncer is unilaterally making policy on who gets in. After posting on my FB page earlier, had one person chime in that he can verify that he had experienced it as well.

  8. So our son turned 6 yesterday and for his birthday dinner he wanted to go to Urban Butcher. For him the highlight was the charcuterie plate to start, so much so that we ordered an extra slice of pâté. He prefers that to birthday cake.

The main thing I wanted to report on here is the existence of an amazing early dinner menu from 5-7 daily and all day Sunday. There is a good option for a $35 steak frites which includes charcuterie plate and either a drink or dessert. We opted for the new Meat Mountain for two for $90, $5 less than regular price and including two drinks or dessert and the charcuterie plate, but an amazing deal either way.  It includes the 60 day dry aged ribeye, two pieces of chicken, lamb, pork, one sausage, broccolini, and potatoes. We also got the grilled fish. All pictured below.

Amongst the five of us, 3 adults and 2 kids, we ate all except 3 pieces of sausage, one drumstick, and one slice of pork and everyone was stuffed.

  9. It's hard for me to imagine a place less economical than Urban Butcher.  Their success as an ongoing business concern always surprises me.  Have you tried Red Apron / B side for dine in?  The vibe is a little different but child friendly and much cheaper than Urban Butcher, and I think the food is better than UB.

So bummed by this news.  With the caveat that my comparison set is basically Red Apron and Stachowski's, I think that SS&B has offered the best charcuterie in the city for several years now.  Really sad to see them go.

We have been to Red Apron once. One definite advantage of having a five year old who loves pate is that the restaurants love it and give him extras of everything so we basically were given a two person portion for the price of one. Union Market's just a little too much out of the way for us in most cases, especially if we just want to get a dinner close to home which Urban Butcher fits the bill.

  10. Announced today on their Facebook page that they will be closing July 31. Went there for dinner as this is our son's favorite restaurant, along with Urban Butcher. We're basically right in between the two, but this has always been the more economical of the two with slightly lower prices, and no alcohol served to add to the bill. Going to be missed.
