  1. Boswell savages the Caps management and players in his online chat today https://live.washingtonpost.com/ask-boswell-20200824.html?hpid=hp_rightrailtwo-4-4-12-12_live-chat-new-2020%3Ahomepage%2Fstory-ans&itid=hp_rightrailtwo-4-4-12-12_live-chat-new-2020%3Ahomepage%2Fstory-ans It was disgusting (to me) to watch. I've seen every minute of the Caps past two post-seasons and more than 50 of their regular-=season games --yes, I watch them a lot more than I write about them-- and, except in '17-'18 after Trotz got all over their asses-- they have always been in love with their own talent. And it's been an anchor.
  2. Well, they stunk up the place again last night. D played pretty well, but couldn't get any offense generated. Kudos to Trotz for keeping his young group disciplined. Probably our last time seeing Holtby in a Caps jersey. Rumors about Rierden being canned. We definitely need a mini-rebuild, and have to see what Seattle picks from us -- rumor there is they will grab TJ Oshie to captain the new team.
  3. That's my guess. Although the cinnamon style with dark chili chocolate makes much better s'mores.
  4. Finally, they woke up and started playing their own game again! Looked dismal for the first 10-15 minutes, then an Isles player slashed Ovi on the back of the legs and Ovi got him in a headlock. Here's the thing, Ovechkin hits, and hits hard in a game, but rarely, rarely fights. For him to headlock that guy meant he was very angry, and a mad Ovi is a scoring Ovi. And score he did, twice, one from his office and one on a drive down the ice. Kuzy also got a silky goal swerving around defenders and deftly popping the puck over the goalie's leg on the far side. Nice write-up with video clip highlights here https://www.nhl.com/news/washington-capitals-new-york-islanders-game-4-recap/c-318555140
  5. A Mexican street food shop located at the Shops at Mark Center off Beauregard in Alexandria https://www.taqueriapicoso.com/ Picked up some take-out last night. It's a nicely decorated place, tables are well spaced and everyone was using good safety techniques. It was on the early side, about 5:45, and only 1 small group plus 1 other person waiting for take-out were there. My sister and I tried the lamb taco, brisket tacos and pulled pork taco, as well as the rice & beans and the corn. As packed to go, the double tortilla tacos are stuffed with the meat and rolled in paper, with the toppings and sauces packed separately, so I sort of had to guess which went with what. The meat are served generously, the tortillas are handmade on site, as are the sauces. I was comparing to Taco Bamba, which is my go-to taco joint, but this place is right on the way home from work if I use the back roads, so I went in hoping it was as good or better so I could have that option. The pork was a little dry and it was roasted but not smoked, although the sauce for it was chipotle-based, so a smoky topping with picked green onions, with some cilantro and a squirt of lime gave it moisture. Overall, good not great. The brisket was very nice, a bright cilantro-jalapeno sauce for it, chopped white onion, could have used some crema but I liked it enough to order again next time. My sister had the lamb and said it reminded her of the goat taco at TB but not as good, spice-wise, and she also had the corn and said it also wasn't as good as the TB elote. However, the tortillas are superior (and you can purchase them separately), and the rice&beans are excellent, sort of a red-beans-and-rice with Mexican spices. Definitely would order those again. So, definitely worth a stop, but need to try some other things on the menu. Oh, and once dine-in feels safer to me, this place is much quieter than the eat-in Taco Bamba locations and doesn't seem to be in such a rush to get you out the door.

  7. A beautiful start to the game that quickly devolved into sloppy, useless play. On one power play, the Isles cleared the puck 7 times in a row with the Caps chasing the puck out of their D-zone the entire two minutes. Orlov is playing on his opposite side, and he's notorious for making lousy plays on his good side and that is now compounded with him working off his backhand all the time. Far too many hail Mary passes to try to move up the ice, instead of controlled, short passes bringing all the forwards up together. And for Pete's sake, TWO penalties called for too many men on the ice. Lazy, sloppy play. Where's the urgency? Not seeing any fire in these guys after the first 5 minutes.
  8. Game time 8:00 tonight. Nicklas Backstrom is out and following concussion protocols following a late cheap hit in Game 1. Lars Eller moves up to center in the top 6, back in the game after quaranting following a trip to DC to see his newborn son. Since Eller has only had one practice and otherwise been off the ice for the past 8 days, he might be pretty rusty. No word yet this afternoon on the defensive pairings
  9. I certainly agree about Fehervary. I wonder if it would be smart to stick such a hot prospect like McMichael out there in such a chippy atmosphere as his first NHL games. Gotta weigh the risks, as we may be losing Samsonov if his back and neck injury prove to be too much to overcome in the off season.
  10. Holtby was fine the first two periods. Third period, the whole team sucked. 40 minutes out of 60 won't win a cup. Fingers crossed that Backstrom isn't badly injured and can come back into the series. Defense is looking very disjointed. Kempny hasn't recovered his playing style since his surgery, he's been a nothingburger,, and Dillon hasn't meshed completely into the system yet. They aren't keeping the opposition to the outside.
  11. Caps beat the Bruins 2-1 in a very boring game. Worrisome that Carlson is still out and still questionable for the first playoff game on Wednesday against Barry Trotz's NY Islanders. However, the much talked about young defenseman, Martin Fehervary, got 15 minutes of ice time and acquitted himself very well -- led the team in hits, didn't get drawn out of position, fast enough to keep the opponent wingers boxed out. Holtby is also playing very well. First playoff game for the Caps is Wednesday @ 3:00 p.m. Guess I'll have to set the DVR.
  12. Happily, it seems that the NHL bubble is working very well. Not a single case reported in the hundreds of players, staff and arena crews. First of the three seeding games for the Caps was a tie in regulation, a loss in a shoot-out against Tampa Bay. First period they couldn't keep any offensive zone time but looked stronger as the game progressed against an incredibly speedy Tampa team. Next game is Thursday against Philadelphia, I believe. It had been set for 4:00 but that may have changed.
  13. I've got the book and used the recipe without riffing on it at all. But in other experiments, I made another peanut butter ice cream, using a condensed milk & cream base and peanut powder, and that turned out much closer to what I was hoping for. I think I'll increase the amount of PB powder next time, or maybe layer in a straight peanut butter swirl as I'm packing it up.
  14. Tried the Jeni's corn ice cream today. It's a big old nope from me. Just weird -- too sweet for corn, too savory for ice cream, without being interesting in either direction. Also, this batch confirms my dislike of the cornstarch slurry used in Jeni's base recipe.
  15. Stopped at the Block in Annandale to pick up some take-out for lunch and, overall, there are not good protocols there. People were all wearing masks, but that's about all I can say is good. Definitely more than 50 people inside, distancing not well observed, etc. After about a minute and a half of trying to stay in line and away from others, I beat feet out of there because a group of 10-12 folks walked in and were basically blocking the doors creating even worse line flow and lack of distancing.
  16. I don't know of a listing of such things, but I would go with Rose's Luxury. They deliver within 30 miles of Capitol Hill using their own employees, not a contracted delivery service.
  17. I've been dreaming of a key lime pie ice cream and took a try at it today. Swing and a miss, as they say. Growing up, we always had the very basic lime juice/egg yolks/sweetened condensed milk in a graham cracker crust pie with a meringue on top, and that was the flavor profile I was going for. Tempered the eggs with the cream and lime zest, added that to the sweetened condensed milk and lime juice, but i didn't think ahead for the phase of chilling the base, and ended up with actual pie filling, not ice cream base. I whisked it up with some whole milk and added some more lime juice before I started to churn it, but the ratios were off and flavors were muted, plus the texture was on the butter side of things. I also got distracted and left my graham cracker crust in the oven too long and it went from buttery toasty to getting close to burnt. Oh well. Still edible but not nearly good enough. Next time, tempered eggs and cream separate from the lime juice and condensed milk so I dont' end up with a chemical cook of my base.
  18. I enjoyed it as well. In the third to last show when critiquing Bryan V's take on the parmigiana reggiano saying "it had no soul," I swear I saw tears spring to his eyes. Malarkey was edited to be the heel, but I've seen him on other shows and he does seem to usually be on the arrogant side of confidence. Although, what a surprise, a head chef might be arrogant!
  19. I've got a base for a repeat of the spearmint-vanilla-choc chip ready to churn tonight. I got blocked out of most of my last batch due to my sister's fondness for it. I don't have to share it with her this time Cherries are on order and will be delivered on Saturday, so will try the Jeni's roasted cherry goat cheese ice cream this weekend.

  21. I've decided the Jeni's base isn't pleasing to me. There's a plastic-y quality to the creaminess that doesn't suit me. I think it's the cornstarch slurry causing it.
  22. It was not my day for ice cream. Decided to do another coffee ice cream; I made a batch of decaf concentrate cold brew to flavor it, went with the B&J tempered egg base with a nod to the Jeni's with a bit of a cornstarch slurry and a dribble of light corn syrup, no cream cheese. It wasn't totally chilled thru when I went to churn it but I thought it was passable. Well, about 15 minutes into the spin, the power at my house went out for no apparent reason for long enough that the canister lost its freeze. Scraped it into a container and will spin again tonight. Was also baking a loaf of bread at the time and I missed the sweet spot and had the dough a bit on the wet side, and it semi-collapsed when the power went out. Kept the oven closed and my fingers crossed. The loaf is edible but doesn't look too good. Oh well.
  23. I don't plan to dine in until I'm vaccinated. Will be doing my restaurant support with take-out only.
