  1. Okay, I think I'm missing something here. I thought $20 Tuesdays meant that it was a Tuesday night gathering, and deliberately done so that the restaurant would benefit from the early-in-the-week business and enough lead time to drive some extra business its way on the coming weekend if good buzz ensued from the gathering. Am I wrong in my understanding?
  2. It could have been so much better, so easily, just with a very limited budget, the time constraints, and served family style. I did watch the last chance episode online but they didn't reveal if it's Grayson or Bev coming back. Of course the editing and Tom C's phrasing gives the slight nod to Grayson to be the one picked but I've been so wrong before based on comments.
  3. Maybe an Italian v. Portugese cuisine duel (isn't there a big Portugese community in New England, or am I completely confused.?) (both can be true).
  4. I believe the business card stickers are paper business cards that have an adhesive backing, so those wouldn't be suitable for window decals.
  5. Saw this http://www.123print.com/Post-it-Notes# and fully customizeable 4"x6" Post-Its run $300 before any discounts or S&H (100 pads = 5000 individual post-its, or 16.7 cents per).
  6. roast pork with a little schmear of good grainy mustard, and a quick sautee of cabbage, onions, dried sweet cherries, caraway and sherry vinegar.
  7. Peeling it off and taking it is actually good, isn't it thought? The person that takes it is more likely to be curious and come to the website. And the next sticker-carrying DR person who goes to the establishment can re-sticker the place.
  8. Went here with friends tonight for our own celebration of the chinese new year. We had the green onion pancake, eggplant with hot garlic sauce, the spicy chicken with the sesame stuffed peppers, szechuan string beans and cumin fish. The eggplant was a little oily, and the green onion pancake a little bland. Otherwise, I think we should have ordered the cumin fish a little less ma la, as we were in tingly spicy overload by the time we ate our way around the table. It was the first time I had the chicken and peppers, what a great dish that is!
  9. count me in for donating to defray costs.
  10. I'm liking Ed and Grayson for their personalities (as edited for TV), but feel that Paul is the man to beat when it comes to cooking. Has he ever been in the bottom when he's been solely responsible for a dish? I don't recall that he has. Hoping that those three end up in the finale.
  11. I think it should say "This place Rocks!"
  12. I did a chuck roast in a red wine braise after work last night but had to eat leftover chicken for dinner then. Tonight, braised beef, smashed potatoes and either steamed broccoli w/ lemon butter or sauteed arugula w/ garlic.
  13. I've PM'd TheMatt and Banco. Getting some freezing drizzle here where I live at the top of a very steep hill. I'm a horrible wuss driver so will not go and hope the roads get better while the temps drop. Hoping Banco can fill in or someone else if you're nearby. So sorry. -- signed weezy the wussy
  14. I think that's another name for fatback.
  15. This is my favorite episode thus far as well. I think shrimp aren't chosen because they are almost always previously frozen; whereas, scallops are doused with preservatives but more likely available at the market ostensibly fresh.
  16. Had dinner tonight here with friends. A lovely meal. I had the 4-course menu with pairings: lobster tortelloni, rockfish, steak, and figgy toffee with sour cream ice cream. the meal started with a shotglass of a curried radish-kohlrabi soup that was hot, tasty, and a wonderful way to begin on such a cold night. The lobster tortelloni came with a creamy herby sauce and a foam, big chunks of lobster wrapped in a tender but still slighty chewy pasta served with a grassy white wine that complemented the herby flavors and cut the richness of the sauce. The rockfish was a smallish square of crispy-skinned fish resting on a wonderful melange of chopped olives, chorizo, gnocchi and some other things. I don't remember much about the wine except that it was a very good foil for the plate. Third course of the steak was perfectly cooked but just not very interesting. It was served with an arugula salad with an assertive vinagrette and a big spanish blended red wine that was too bold for the relatively lean meat -- that wine needed a lot more fat to work against. This was the only dish that I seasoned at the table to try to kick up the flavor of the meat a bit. It just didn't have that big, beefy flavor that I was hoping for. Dessert was the figgy toffee pudding and served with a nice, nutty sherry. The dish was garnished with toasted walnuts and paired against the sherry it was a perfect finish for the meal. Service was pleasant and efficient and it's a very lovely room that is comfortable and it is easy to carry on a conversation. One of my friends got a dessert that was a plateful of small riffs on childhood favorites and it was one of the cutest plates I've ever seen -- a tiny Hostess cupcake, an oatmeal creme pie, a square of "Snickers" bar, a fudge-pop, etc. Just adorable and apparently quite tasty, too. All in all, a very, very good meal and an excellent evening.
  17. And here I was, pondering getting a little spread of land and starting a sous-vide ranch when I retired.....
  18. Sort of a conglomeration of reasons -- after work laziness, too much glass in the farther reaches of the parking lot where one ends up when arriving later, and a chance to socialize with my fellow dancers before class starts.
  19. Back again. Got the hamburger this time, ordered medium, arrived pink in the center, served on a Kaiser roll with shredded lettuce, a slice of red onion and tomato, with a side of fries, but no condiments (except ketchup at the table). The roll was about 3/4" all around bigger than the burger, The burger itself was reasonably thick, but lacking juiciness even though it wasn't visibly overdone or smashed to all hell. Beef was a little below average in beefy flavor. The fries (frozen, natch), however, were surprisingly good. They had an extremely crispy exterior and were a bit puffy looking, so I expect they had been coated in some potato or rice flour before freezing, served nicely hot and not greasy, and well seasoned with salt and a bit of pepper.
  20. crushed pork rinds is another possibility.
