  1. If memory serves, the base is probably a salt and pepper shrimp, but I seem to remember a glaze (slightly sweet, slightly spicy?) as well. I quite liked the dish, but I also recall it being rather pricey (although I suppose everything on the menu is more expensive than at a typical Chinese restaurant).
  2. I haven't been in quite a while, but I always used to get the garlic sprouts with chicken (paired with a Chinese hot sauce that I can't remember if it was provided or bought separately from the grocery store) and the jeo-yen shrimp.
  3. Ah, that's too bad. I liked getting Le Petit Italian for a late lunch. I guess I should have gotten the regular size...
  4. Wow, that was a cruel topic header. I can't recall a more disappointing click-through.
  5. Yes, the soy ginger chicken thighs over rice is my "go to" order. I used to order the large portion and save half for later. Last time, I ordered the regular portion, finished it, and nearly lapsed into a food coma. The Block also has my current favorite dessert: the single scoop of ash coconut ice cream with Oreo topping and Nutella drizzle that you can get from Munch - I might have gotten this last time as well (near food coma notwithstanding).
  6. I haven't been in a while, but I was always under the impression the place was owned and run by a Korean gentleman whose last name is escaping me right now. I guess that's a sign that I need to go back!
  7. There is also a stand in Tysons I. The line was absolutely huge the first time I saw it. Based on these posts, I will have to give it a try!
  8. Haven't been to Pizzeria Orso since Will Artley left (though driven more by changes in my family's preferences than the change in chefs) or Smashburger ever. I like Elevation well enough, but I keep coming back to the fact that the lunchtime price of Takumi's Chirashi ($18) stacks up so well against the price of an entrée salad or entrée at Coastal Flats (another family go-to) and you get a miso soup, a small salad and a plate of some of the best sashimi-don in the area - it's hard to pass up for other places!
  9. It's our favorite place to get lunch. In addition to the free miso soup and salad at lunchtime, we get agedashi tofu (piping hot and savory), two orders of chirashi, and the lychee and yuzu sorbets for dessert. And they don't mind when we bring lunch for our non-sushi-eating 5-year-old. Top notch all around, and a great value.
  10. This is not in Annandale, but I cast my vote for the to-shi-sal at Hwa Gae Jang Tuh in Rockville. It is hanger steak cut into thickish slices with a less noticeable marinade, so it is more like eating galbi than bul-go-gi, but with less fat and sugar (it seems, at least to me) than galbi. It's my favorite type of Korean BBQ, and for whatever reason, I never see this cut at any other Korean restaurant.
  11. You know what is a typo? Their "Taco Wasabi," which a friend ordered without asking what it was. I pointed out the data gap, but my friend only ordered more brazenly, stating "I like tacos, and I like wasabi - what could possibly go wrong?" Except that "taco" should have been spelled "tako"....
  12. Quick mini-review: Went there yesterday with two friends. I got the miso ramen, and my friends got the curry ramen. I really enjoyed my miso ramen, particularly the portion size. I often find myself ordering extra noodles (or wishing I got more noodles) with my dish - OKI does not offer an "extra noodles" option, and I was satisfied with the amount I got. I thought my miso broth was excellent, but then one of my friends let me try his curry broth - I was expecting more of a curry sauce, but it was a spicy, rich broth with curry and coconut flavors. Really outstanding. Also, FWIW, we asked our waitress if there was any relationship between OKI and Sala Thai, and she said no.
  13. Just a word to set expectations, following my family's meal there last night. 2 appetizers does not mean 2 starters; it means app-size portions of 2 starters (I've never had the butternut squash and lentil salad before, but it looked about half the size of the beet and baby carrot salad I usually get, and the kale salad we got looked about 1/4 to 1/3 the size of a regular salad). Pizzas were excellent as usual, but the desserts also appeared to be about half their usual size. Don't get me wrong - food was great and still a good value, but not the fantastic value I was anticipating.
