  1. I walked up to Pie Sisters yesterday to check it out. The store is located on M Street in Georgetown right before 35th Street, across from the Key Bridge. The shop is really cute, a few tables with flowers on each one and an L shaped case holding cuppies (muffin-sized pies) and full-sized pies. Erin, one of the sisters, was very helpful about explaining the savory pies to me. She told me that their full-sized chicken pot pie (which also comes cuppy-size) can be ordered by phone ahead of time for dinner and when you bring back the glass pie plate you receive $5 back. It looked really good but I opted for 3 coconut custard cuppies and 1 cherry cuppy to take home to my husband and daughter. Now I am not a huge fan of sweets so I didn't try any last night, although my daughter did and she said it was really really good. But this morning I was hungry so I ate the coconut cream cuppy for breakfast and, oh yeah, it's really really good. The crust was incredible - flaky, browned to a pretty tan color. The custard was amazing, not too sweet, with flecks of coconut and it was topped with fresh whipped cream and a pretty pie pastry leaf on top. I just realized it probably would have tasted even better yesterday, if that is even possible. I've been dreaming about it all day. Goodbye cupcake --Hello cuppy.
  2. Agreed, Donald is amazing. I went there a couple of weeks ago to pick up a prescription for my husband. I had not been there in probably 5 years. Donald not only remembered me, he remembered all of my family members and asked about each. I have been going to CVS on 14th & P and forgot that a pharmacy could be a good experience! Cathy Homer
  3. Thank you all for your recommendations. Very helpful. I will check out Black Salt soon. Have heard many good things about their seafood. I spend a lot of time on the Eastern Shore in Maryland and have no problem finding great oysters and crabs there. But fish has always been lacking in freshness and variety. Would be nice if a reliable fish store would open up in the downtown DC area somewhere!
  4. Has anyone had experience with buying seafood on-line? I was reading an article in Food and Wine (I think, I subscribe to so many) and it said if you are not satisfied with your local seafood markets (which I am not), then buy on-line. However the article did not suggest any particular site to purchase from. My daughter, who works for a seafood restaurant in DuPont, says they buy almost all their seafood on-line. When I ask her where she says "all over". No help there. thanks Cathy
  5. November's issue of Gourmet has an article on salting turkeys. They have a few versions, herb, southwest, etc. I'm thinking of trying the herb version. Also, I ordered turkeys from Cedar Run Farm (cedarruncattle.com), a cattle, hog, chicken and turkey farm on the Eastern Shore. I'll report back. Oh, and I'm sort of new, been mostly lurking, but Thanksgiving gets me excited!
  6. I've always bought my seafood at Cannon's in Georgetown (I work right down the street), and I've always been happy with the quality. They are closed indefinitely for renovations. I have bought seafood at Whole Foods on P Street (near my home) and frankly it was just bad. I bought shrimp, brought it home and unwrapped it and the smell of amonia was overpowering. I rinsed it well, brined it in salt water and it was at least palatible. I bought some tuna, same thing. Third times the charm, but he wahoo was just bad. I've heard good and bad things about Maine Avenue. Has anyone had experience there? I've only driven by there and it looked a little intimidating. Thanks for any help! Cathy
  7. I did search epicurious but didn't find what I was looking for. Julia's recipe sounds great, but the one at Hank's was more mousse-like, no layers. I think it had sweet red peppers in it.
  8. I was at Hank's last Friday for some clams and oysters. Our waitress described the salmon terrine so hubby and I ordered one to split. It was really, really good. So, anytime we have something that makes us both say mmm, he asks me if I can make it. Anyone tried making a salmon terrine? I searched my recipe books but only came up with duck liver or other organ meats, no salmon. It was served with capers and a preserved lemon sauce (which is my husbands speciality, lemons that is). Thanks for any ideas!
  9. Having a family reunion/engagement party for my sister this Saturday. My idea is to marinate some rockfish in lime, chilies, annato, garlic, wrap in banana leaves and grill for 10 minutes. Then pound some chicken breasts very thin, soak in lime, tequilla and chilies, grill on super hot. Then take london broil (because it's on sale) and marinate in chilies, lime, salt, red pepper, grill, slice thin. Add some steamed corn tortillas, salsas (mango, peach, tomato, tomatillo), cheeses, pickled chilies, avacado, grilled pineapple, bowles of limes, and let everyone have at it. I can't for the life of me think of any sides. Black beans? rice? Ideas?
  10. Yes it does suck. Friday will be her last day in business altogether. She is thinking of returning to El Salvador.
  11. I received my copy of Gourmet yesterday and there was a small article on various restaurants in various states. Hank's had a very nice feature spotlighting Jamie's lobsteroll. big sigh. I'll never be able to get a table now....
  12. Greg and I went there on Friday. We had the pork chops and a pitcher of margaritas. The pork was good, the beans excellent (but I'm a bean lover). Also, every Friday they feature Joe Falero and DC's Latin Jazz All Stars. The band was fabulous, the kind of music that makes you happy and want to dance (and drink tequilla). Anyway, Juanita, the owner, brought us some sort of tequilla shooter and informed us that she is closing and this Friday is her last. May explain the lack of interest by the staff in your past visits. The new occupants are French, that's all she knew. Anyway, this Friday is expected to be a blast, according to Juanita. The band will be playing, starting at 6:30. Sounds like a party. We can't make it, unfortunately, but hoping some of you guys can and report back. Cathy
  13. I don't know the name, but you would take the first exit after crossing the Bay Bridge (Route 8 South) and you will start seeing signs to "pick your own peaches". Just follow the signs. It's about a 45 minute to an hour drive from DC, depending on traffic.
  14. We went to this great little farm on the southern tip of Kent Island yesterday and picked the biggest, juiciest blackberries (I wanted to purchase them pre-picked because it was so HOT, but was told "the sign says U pick, not me pick"). So we left the dog in the air conditioned truck and picked. It was great fun and we picked way too many for the 2 of us. Took the berries home and made the best berry pudding. They also have tons of peaches and some veges (squash, eggplant). Looked like the tomatoes will be ready in a week or so. Everything is pick your own.
  15. I'm going there for dinner tonight. Has anyone been there yet? Any recommendations? thanks! Cathy
