  1. due to their food safety issues recently, Chipotle has changed the way they prep a lot of their food. lettuce comes in pre-cut, steaks are cooked offsite sous vide then seared at the restaurants (previously I think only the carnitas and barbacoa were done this way), and a few other things that make it seem not as "fresh."
  2. There's a restaurant in Lynchburg, VA called Andy Chang's that has a very similar menu and many of the same specialties. Think it might be a former Peter Chang cook (related?). It was pretty good the one time I went with my in-laws. https://g.co/kgs/HAvcpc
  3. One thing I'm interested in, but feel bad making you invest the money, is Pineapple and Pearls, which Sietsema called the best example of fine dining in America right now. So that goes along with DC having the best Indian and Spanish tapas. But you seem to have a good appreciation of true fine dining. I don't know, perhaps it's something we could pitch in for.
  4. He's long touted Jaleo as best tapas and Rasika as best Indian in the U.S.
  5. Looks like he doesn't have much bad to say about Rose's -- still 3.5 stars. It seems like a chicken liver dish was a touch sweet and he doesn't like waiting in line (yet Bad Saint and Little Serow are top 10?).
  6. And his #1 restaurant is.....All Purpose? So that means no Rose's.
  7. Any recent recommendations? We'll be there for a long weekend in late October.
  8. Zahav (fantastic Israeli restaurant in Philly) has a new cookbook out.
  9. My sister studied abroad in Florence through NYU's program and that was apparently their hangout spot. She went to the DC outpost a few times and said it was pretty good, and at least sort of hit the nostalgia spot.
  10. Just accepted a job here, and am very excited. Our plan was always to move back to NC after a few years, and this was 1B on our list of places (Winston-Salem was 1A).
  11. Sichuan peppercorns have a tingly/numbing effect on the tongue. You noted they might be in the dish, so do you think that's what it was?
  12. You could see if barmini has a reservation available. Great drinks, fun atmosphere, and you'll definitely be able to easily talk with one another.
  13. I can't see them doing it in the U.S. unless service charges become much more standard, because of the awkwardness of having to tell the tip amount to your server before they charge the card.
  14. For a long time at restaurants in Europe they bring the card reader to your table. When we were in Ireland last summer they would sometimes ask if we wanted to add a tip before scanning the card. So they would simply put in the total sum, swipe the card, then hand you the receipt to sign. You didn't have the option to leave a tip on the receipt. It definitely makes for a more secure transaction since your card never leaves your sight. In Ireland a tip is generally appreciated, but not expected, and I could see it making for some awkward transactions here in the US if servers started bringing the card reader to the table and people wanted to leave a low tip.
  15. Central? has something for everyone, fun atmosphere, no steps that I recall
  16. I second that. The choices are getting overwhelming. Perhaps if a restaurant doesn't meet a certain threshold of votes through a certain number of polls (3?) it gets dropped off and replaced with another.
  17. I took my mom here last Monday and we enjoyed our meal. She had read their recent glowing review in the Post where Tom called it possibly the Mexican in the city and wanted to go. We ordered split an order of chips and 2 salsas -- one a verde, the other the borracho because it has Mezcal in it. Both were outstanding, and the chips were some of the best tortilla chips I've had. Think Fritos, but fresher and better. We debated getting a few more salsas for dessert. For our entree we split an order of the al pastor tacos (2 or 3 come with an order, we opted for 2) and the short rib mole, which came with a nice-sized chunk of meat atop the mole with pea shoots(?) and radishes to give the dish freshness. The moles all come with four housemade corn tortillas to an order so you can make your own tacos. We also got a side of black beans, because they were specifically noted in the review, but were underwhelming -- needed more seasoning. The Mezcal flights looked interesting, but we had done a lot of walking so wanted something more refreshing and opted for cocktails with all seeming to be made with Mezcal. My first was a Oaxacan sour and my mom got one that was basically a margarita with Mezcal, served up. I finished with a more bitter drink, which also featured Fernet. Everything came out to a little over $100 including tax and tip for chips and 2 salsas, an order of tacos, the mole, and three cocktails. Not cheap, but definitely high quality ingredients. Would recommend having a larger party so you could sample more food, especially all the salsas.
  18. this chainification is truly taking off, with them set to open a location in King of Prussia, PA.
  19. ok thanks for checking. it's not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, will just take getting used to.
  20. Thanks. I just pulled it up on my phone, and, for example, the Baltimore restaurant forum description takes up the near entirety of my screen -- iPhone 6S with default text size.
  21. On mobile, is it possible to compress the page a bit so you don't have to do a lot of scrolling to get to the forum you want? Perhaps by cutting down on each forum's description? The older version was superior in that regard.
