  1. I thought we had a thread on Shaw's, but I guess not ... According to the City Paper, the stillborn Shaw's Tavern has been bought by the owner of the late Axis on U St. He is bringing along the chef from Leopold's to head up the kitchen. I always liked Axis, it was low key for a U St place, if a bit overpriced. Always a nice beer selection, though, which goes a long way in my book. As a nearby resident of Bloomingdale I have high hopes for another worthwhile neighborhood sit down joint.

  3. I think I know the answer but I'm typing out loud anyway. We can take a few hours off for lunch on our anniversary next week but we can't stray far. He's in SW, I'm on Capitol Hill. I'm willing to go as far as 15th Street. I was going to suggest Sou'Wester but I remembered that Eric Ziebold is no longer connected to it. Central is an old favorite but is a little loud. If someone else asked me this, I'd say go to Proof. Except that he didn't like Proof. But I'm pretty sure that was immediately after it opened and I've been back several times and loved it. Am I missing someplace obvious or should we just go to Proof? Thanks!
  4. Hi All, I'm coming to DC in early April for a conference held at the Washington Hilton (1919 Connecticut Ave NW). I've got about 1 hour for lunch beginning at 12:15-12:30. From my research using this site and a few other resources, I've got a list of restaurants which might be feasible traveling on foot. I'll provide a starter list below. Please give me your feedback on best bets, other options not on the list as well as which ones would be good choices for dinner instead. [edit - updated list with content from thread] Updated list (asterisks for those you think will work): Thaiphoon Teaism*** Regent Thai Keren Las Canteras Amsterdam Falafelshop* Old City Cafe Firefly (cab or dinner)* Chop't Moby Dick House of Kabab CF Folks (cab)** DGS Delicatessen** (cab or dinner) Thai Chef Bistro du Coin Additions Sette Osteria* (pizza menu only) Mourayo* Mintwood Place* (cab or dinner) BGR the Burger Joint Food trucks in Dupont Circle Cocova (artisan chocolatier) A.M. Wine Shoppe (wine store which sells sandwiches, charcuterie and cheese) Pleasant Pops (upscale popsicles and sandwiches) Cashions Eat Place (Dinner) Thanks in advance!
  5. Headed to the arboretum an then to home depot later and want to make use of the excursion to have lunch somewhere different, that we wouldn't usually go to. Any suggestions in that area of DC? I know of Deli City (have not been) but any others? And, is there any seating at deli city? We are willing to drive a bit. Thanks!
  6. I'm heading up to Frederick tomorrow. Can you recommend a place for lunch in the old town area? I'm looking for a casual inexpensive lunch. I read the postings about Lunch Box. Is that still good? Are there places alongs those lines? Thanks. Deb

    Lunch Deals

As most of you know I'm a big fan of Vidalia's $19.90 3-course lunch special. I also enjoy the Proof $12 lunch entree + glass of wine at the bar special. Eve is another but not practical for lunch for anyone working in DC. Are there other attractive lunch specials I am missing in the Dupont/Downtown area for folks who are nto on expense accounts. Not interested in RW specials, but in longer running deals. Feel free to move to another forum if necessary/appropriate.
  8. I am always looking for quick breakfast and lunch places, as document review can be draining and snacking is fun. So, I am quite happy that Devon & Blakely is literally right across the street from my current project. They have a wide-offering of breakfast foods (croissants, muffins, scones, parfaits), to lunch (sandwiches, made-to-order salads, small sides, and lots of soup selections), to snacks (rice krispies, UK candies [e.g. Aero, KitKat, Polo], cookies, chips/pita crisps, rice krispies). They also have some vegetarian & vegan options available. Breakfast items: I can't recommend the Iced Coffee -- it was super-weak, but the sugar-free scone was very good. It had a bit of a ginger kick, which was a great way to start off my day. Lunch: Green Pea Soup with Mint & Lemon (v) *really* hits the spot. Also enjoyed the sampling of Butternut Squash Apple soup. They also have cold soups available, with a Carrot & Ginger one I am interested in trying. Soups range from $3.25 to $5.25 for a 12oz. Also ordered a made-to-order small salad ($2.95 base) + toppings ranging from $0.75 to $2.00. (in my case it was $4.45). My wallet will be a bit lighter and tummy happier going back to try more stuff here for the next few weeks.... 1331 F Street, NW Washington, DC 20004
  9. Dupont Circles ever expanding set of lunch options just got a little bigger. Tomatillo Taqueria operates out of the bay window of The Big Hunt (right next door to the new Kabab place which was hiring today) and is a welcome and cheap addition to the hood. 3 Tacos $6 (beef, chicken, pork or veggie, choice of 6/7 gratis toppings, except guac which will run you $1) Burrito $6 Some side dishes (chips and salsa etc) I went for the Tacos and was impressed. Interested to hear others opinions.
