  1. Rocklands is opening a new location in Wintergreen Plaza on Rockville Pike. Any reason for me to get excited about this, or should we continue to get our 'cue from Urban? The only Rocklands we're tried was the Glover Park location and that was at least 7-8 years ago. I remember nothing about the meat, but their corn salad was pretty good. The new Rocklands would be about 3 minutes from our house, rather than a trek down the Pike.
  2. Sligo Pit BBQ has opened in the former snack bar at Sligo Creek Golf Course, serving barbeque daily to golfers and local residents alike: "Sligo Pit BBQ Opens at Sligo Creek Golf Course" by Mike Diegel on sourceofthespring.com
  3. Friendship BBQ opened on 9/1/2019. It appears to be the Maryland outpost of a Flushing Queens restaurant. You can see the menu at their website. We strolled in on Sunday after our meal at La Tosca. at about 6:30 pm they were already closed for the day. It seemed like they were a bit overwhelmed, but the aromas were quite intoxicating. The menu is a bit confusing to someone who does not read Chinese and I am not sure that all of the translations are exactly correct (e.g., what are the portion sizes for some of the offerings, and is there really such a thing grilled chicken skeleton?). I
  4. Of the new crop of restaurants on Columbia Heights' 11th Street strip, I've been to Kangaroo Boxing Club the most--four times. This isn't by design, but it's easy, comfortable, welcoming, and has enough high points that it's easy to look past the weak ones. The pastrami, for instance. I'm no expert, but this is by far the best I've ever had. I mean, outstanding, off-the-charts, off-the-hook terrific. The rye bread holds up to it and I don't know how it's possible, but the mustard makes it all even better. Seriously: get the pastrami. I'm not as wild about the other meats. The Smokey
  5. I stopped off at Epic Smokehouse in Pentagon City the other day after a late meeting. No thread here yet. Its about 1 1/2 years old. The restaurant is long and narrow with a full big window line. Its not the most attractive walk around neighborhood --across from a big blank wall at Costco...but Oh my there are a lot of new residential high rises in the neighborhood. The long window line looks into a handsome sleek restaurant. I was only looking for a quick meal; went to the bar and ordered off the bar menu, choosing an Epic Burger and an IPA. One part of this meal was simply heavenly
  6. Just had an event catered by Backyard Barbecue which is located just north of East Falls Church metro. Pulled pork and coleslaw was the limit of the order, but what BB delivered was spot on. I am kind of surprised, there are so many poor to mediocre barbecue joints inside the beltway, I didn't think BBQ could survive around here. The sauce was nicely spicy, with a hint of vinegar and a smoky background flavor that I think might have been cumin. I am not a huge fan of cumin, but it seemed to work here. Buns were basic, but the slaw was crispy and pretty tasty as well. Definitely a neighborhood
  7. Got a late start on Saturday night and places were either closed or packed with no tables available until midnight, and we were circling around and ended up at Blue Sand for dinner around 10:00 or so. The menu isn't particularly easy to navigate for non Korean customers, but with some help from the server, we ended up with a double order of pork belly (double order required), and squid tempura. The good: about a half dozen banchan -- seaweed salad, kimchi, pickled eggplant, mung bean salad, spinach, a couple of other things I didn't recognize -- and two different soups came with the me
  8. Website. A large and somewhat inexpensive pan-Asian menu. Has anyone been to one? I'm thinking about taking the kids - they love Korean BBQ.
  9. I like San Woo but I think WooMi is much better. We love the KimChee Jigae and other soups like Man Doo Guk. I also love the seasoned tofu appetizer. They make a casserole Mandoo which, if there are 4 or 6 of you would be a great starter. Their $9 all you can eat lunch is a guilty pleasure. I think the Sushi is only so-so.
  10. When I was at Pentagon City mall a few days ago, I noticed the Ruby Tuesday has closed. The sign on the paneling over the empty space says that a Harry's Tap Room will be opening there. I can't recall if it gave an ETA other than "soon" on the sign.
  11. Hank Dietle's Tavern seems to have been ignored...last outpost of "old" Rockville....great hamburgers, interesting clientele. Gone but not forgotten. From the AOL guide: Just across the Pike from White Flint shopping, Dietle's little bar charges less for a beer than most people pay to tip the valets in Rockville's most upscale mall. Though it's "Cold Beer" sign and country house style look a little quirky among the fast food joints and neon lights on Rockville Pike, Hank Dietle's Tavern is Montgomery County's last true roadhouse. It's a welcome retreat -- a no-nonsense neighborhood bar w
  12. Sthitch: have you tried Willard's in Chantilly? For a jack-of-all-trades place they do a good job. Don't miss the cobblers!
  13. I stopped into Old Glory today for lunch for the first time in a long while. Normally loud and mobbed, it was peaceful and less loud today. I completely forgot how good and honest the food is. A big bowl of chili with all the extras and a sliced brisket sandwich hit the spot perfectly on this lousy, cold and rainy day. I had to stop myself from over-ordering because so many things looked appealing. Based on what I had, plus the pleasant and quick service, I'll be going back soon.
  14. 2 new BBQ places opened in the Heights over the past few months (Willow's and Victorian), and I finally got around to trying one. Scott Sandlin wrote a glowing review over on Houston Food Finder, and I largely agree with him. We got a couple 2 meat plates, with brisket, ribs, and turkey. The brisket was nicely done, moist, with well-rendered fat. Assertive pepper bark, just as I like it. The ribs were similarly seasoned, and juuuuust a little on the tough side. Not "tough," just not quite as tender as I'm used to. The turkey was very well done - juicy and so, so deliciously smoky.
  15. Opening in late November comes an exciting new entrant to the Loudoun County dining scene. Located near Lenah Run, west of Stone Ridge, this BBQ joint is one to keep an eye on. As far as I can tell, the owner used to have a successful food truck and leveraged that to open this store front location. I happened to be at Gilbert's Corner this weekend to pick up some pastries from Arno's. On my way back I saw this place had opened, and the parking lot had filled up. Intrigued, I dropped in to give it a try. They sell brisket, pulled pork, chicken, ribs and smoked sausage along wit
