  1. Château La Conseillante Wine Dinner at Petit Louis Bistro, 11/12/18 , 7pm $250 pp inclusive. call 410-366-9393 to purchase your tickets
  2. Percebes are extremely expensive - you can also find them in Bordeaux, where they're called "Pouce-Pieds." Also, you may not want to hear this, but they're farming them now in Oregon, and you can buy them by mail.
  3. Well, I did something yesterday I hadn't done in probably ten years: bought a second-growth Bordeaux off a retailer's shelf, and drank it that same night. I've been wary of the 2003 vintage in Europe since the summer of 2003. The was the year of the great European Heat Wave, and in France, elderly residents in nursing homes without air conditioning were actually dying. Incredibly, that Wikipedia article claims that 14,802 heat-related deaths happened just in France, mostly among the elderly (it just does not get that hot in France, so *lots* of people don't have air conditioning, including M
  4. "The Bittersweet Tale Of Sauternes - Why Sauternes In Underappreciated" by Eric Asimov on nytimes.com "Are these prices for full bottles, or half bottles?" I asked. "Full bottles." "I'll take them all," I said, with an air of disbelief. This was just last week. It was the same damned thing with Port about 5-10 years ago, and Madeira about 10-15 years ago - Sauternes is seriously undervalued right now.
  5. Well, I called it right, but I called it too soon. Given that a decent-sized Bordeaux chateau makes 20,000-25,000 *cases* of wine per year, it is unbelievable that these wines are as expensive as they are. They are simply not rare; it's just that Russia, and then China, swooped into the markets, putting heavy demand on a product with an inelastic supply. Burgundy has finally caught up to (and in many cases, passed) Bordeaux in the auction markets, but it's also, quite literally, 100 times more rare. There are many bottlings (vintage+vineyard+producer) that see production in the 200-250 case
