  1. I got to know Alicia Wolman, the owner of Sublime Canine, at the Reston dog park, where she had an uncanny ability to keep an eye on all of her client dogs. My standard poodle, Storm, is downright crazy about her. Storm is not the easiest dog to handle at the dog park because she plays hard** and has the doggie equivalent of asperger's syndrome and can't read other dogs' body language to know when to back off. Alicia took this all in stride and gave me some useful hints for distracting Storm when she starts overwhelming other dogs. Alicia offers a number of services, including LONG dog park expeditions with the dogs getting 2 or more hours of serious, supervised playtime, which she calls the "puppy pack." She also does behavioral work with dogs, including long-term work with timid, fearful dogs. Alicia tries to pair your dog up with at least one other compatible dog when suggesting a schedule for her puppy pack service. The puppy pack goes to several area dog parks and the large fenced back yard of one customer. An exhausted dog is a happy and well-behaved dog, and mine are exhausted after their weekly puppy pack outing. Alicia is also flexible enough to take my dogs on an as needed basis when work drags me out of the home office for more than an hour or two. Facebook Page [see below] Alicia Wolman, Sublime Canine, sublimecanine@gmail.com **This is typical for standard poodles. That show haircut is a total lie; they love to box and wrestle. If Storm is on her back, it's because she wants to wrestle from below. She doesn't understand the whole rolling over onto your back submission thing. PollyG aka Polly Goldman
  2. So in exactly 3 weeks I'll have sold my place in Cleveland Park for a move out to a town home in VA (Ballston to be exact). To that end, I'm going to also be leaving a dog walker that we love and trust (he's helped us since our english bulldog Lucy was 10 weeks old) and searching for a new dog walker. One thing that's important to me is that the service (or individual) walks the dogs individually as opposed to having a handful of leashes with dogs crowded together. Cost is less important to me than quality here. Appreciate any help! Best, Dave Hofman
  3. My friend's Chris and Ray Anderson own and operate Christine's Pets, LLC in the Fairfax and Burke, VA area. They offer a professional dog walking and pet siting service, with all of their caregivers having successfully passed a criminal background check. Perhaps one of the greatest features of Christine's Pets is the daily report card they leave every time they come. The caregiver (often Ray the owner) writes a little note about how he got along with your dog and whether anything was disturbed in the apartment/home. They are fanatical about customer service as well! I have know the owners for many years, trust them, they are the best. Here is a listing of their services: * Walk your dog(s) on the leash, 30 mins each walk for $15 (additional dogs for $5 each) * Sit your pet(s) in your home while you're away, 30 mins each visit for $15 (nominal charge for additional pets) * Feed, water and brush your pet(s), no additional charge * Exercise your pet(s) and allow them to relieve themselves * Pick-up and dispose of your pet(s) waste responsibly * Scoop kitty-litter boxes * Transport your pet(s) to grooming and veterinarian appointments * Bring in mail, newspapers, trashcans; turn lights on and off * Send pet pictures & updates by phone or email while you're away Christine's Pets, LLC is licensed, insured and bonded. 4. In what will be the first in a chain of posts (over the coming week or two) relating to services we've used / are using during our move from Cleveland Park to Arlington - I wanted to wholeheartedly endorse the services of Joe Pollock of Joe's Dog Walking. Joe was recommended to us by a neighbor shortly before we picked up our 8 week old english bulldog puppy Lucy and from day 1 he has been tremendous in watching after her. He comes at lunch every day and walks Lucy solo for 30 minutes for a very reasonable rate. In addition to her daily walks, Joe has been EXTREMELY flexible and available on short notice or on weekends if my wife and I end up out of the house for longer than anticipated. We have also leveraged Joe to stay with Lucy overnight and he provided his usual superb service. If I could I would continue to use Joe once we move to Arlington, but unfortunately he only takes clients in DC. He has been an incredible help as Lucy has grown up (she's now a year and 2 months) and both my wife and I would be extremely happy to provide any additional reference points a prospective client might have on top of our wholehearted endorsement of his services. 5. I love any opportunity to suggest a great person and great business to the general public. We adopted our elderly chihuahua from A Forever Home, a rescue organization based in Chantilly, VA (which deserves its own thread), and being first-time dog owners we knew we needed some general obedience training in order to understand how our new pup worked. Toni Woods-Wilson offers both puppy and adult obedience classes in a group setting, as well as private training for those who need it. The classes were fantastic, Toni is patient and understands dog language and motivation to a degree that I found magical. In seconds she would have stubborn dogs obeying her every word. She's easy to approach for tough questions, plus she's just a lot of fun to spend an hour with each week. Within weeks our dog could sit, stay, walk on a lead and do a few other tricks. Plus at the end of the class you get a hilarious picture of your dog wearing a graduation cap (worth the money alone). She teaches classes at the Wagtime doggy daycare in Shaw as well as the Anytime K-9 space in SE. I cannot recommend her services enough. Arlene Fletcher
