  1. Señor Ramon Taqueria Opens on Baron Cameron Avenue by Fatimah Waseem, RestonNow Looks like the restaurant will open before the signage goes up; it says in the article it is opening today. This strip-mall shares the Home Depot parking lot and this location used to be a Greeberry's, then a Thai (Hibiscus Thai) place and now this. It is a few doors down from Willard's Menu Reston location. Menu looks pretty good, and will have to go by soon to check it out. We need more local Mexican-type places the Anita's and Uncle Julio's get old quickly.
  2. Been meaning to try Panas for a while now since it is so close to my office. Dined there last evening with my wife and had a really really enjoyable quick meal. My understanding is that the empanadas are Argentinean style so they are smaller than those at say, Julias (which is the only other empanadas place i've ever been to in DC). The restaurant is a nice space with a "hip" decor. It looks like Panas has about 15 empanadas choices. They had a number of vegetarian empanadas, steak, chicken and also tuna and shrimp ones. We both ended up ordering their meal deal which gives you a drink, three empanadas and a scoop of plantain chips. I ordered three: chicken pesto, brie and "fiesta cheese". All three were excellent, and in both of our opinions, miles better than Julias. I particularly liked the fiesta cheese one which had a lot of mozzarella filling and some very good caramelized onions in it. Overall, the fillings were all very good, savory and seemed very high quality. Their dipping sauces were also quite good. I particularly enjoyed the chimi sauce which was basically a tomato salsa type sauce with a hint of cilantro. If you like empanadas, I highly recommend checking the place out.
  3. A Bolivan bakery has opened up in my 'hood, replacing the sketchy Asian bakery next to the new Wild Chicken, and got a nice writeup in the WaPo here. The info: 3900 Pickett Rd. Fairfax, VA 22031 703-978-8021 Tues-Sat:10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sun: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Has anyone gone yet? Can't wait to try it out, especially the saltenas!
  4. Here we go - their website. They appear to be somewhat related to Hula Girl, but to be honest, I wasn't paying attention when they talked about it. For busy season this year my company has had food trucks coming by our parking lot to serve dinner. I've skipped the previous ones this week for various reasons (Tasty Kabob, DC Slices, and Hula Girl) but tonight was DC Empanadas and they included a Curbside Cupcake. I got two of the Ropanada "“ Ropa Vieja Style Shredded Beef with Rice Tossed in a Tomato Based Sauce. These are deep fried, but not very greasy at all. I enjoyed it quite a bit, not too saucy or too dry, though I could've gotten used some hot sauce. They also offered The Badass "“ Buffalo Chicken and Blue Cheese (which many of my coworkers enjoyed quite a bit), Tio Shawn "“ Black Beans, Rice, Monterrey Jack Cheese, Chipotle Peppers and Onions (I didn't see anyone order that), coleslaw (not mayo based, tasty though), and various drinks (yay Coke Zero). As mentioned elsewhere I got the Cookies and Cream cupcake, and it was awesome. Now to try to make it home without falling asleep. --- [The following posts have been split into separate threads: Capital Empanadas Food Truck (thetrain)]
  5. It should be noted that there are two empanada food trucks - the other being Capital Empanadas which is not good. at all. Do not make the mistake of eating at Capital Empanadas, which serves small, dry, overpriced empanadas that are only edible with copious amounts of green sauce.
  6. A friend asked where to find Argentine-style empanadas. Not Julia's (though she agree's they're good), and not Bolvian style empanadas saltenas (which we have a plethora of in Arlington). No eggs or olives. If you know of a place, preferably near Arlington, please let me know! Thanks.
  7. Caveat - I have never been to this place, the only thing I have tried are the Saltenas and they were brought to a DC United tailgate a couple weeks ago by one of the employees (may have been the owner) But, I can say the Saltenas were one of the best things I've tried all year. I've never been to Olney...not sure I ever will...but I would go to have these saltenas again. Little smaller than a baseball, golden brown, insanely juicey (like dripping down your arm juicey), delicious. Anyone in the Olney area? You should go and report back. http://elantojitoinc.com/index.html 18068 Georgia Ave. Olney, MD 20832 Tel: 301-570-3331 Tel: 301-570-3351 Judging from the photos on their website, appears to be located in the Olney Center (same as Mannequin Pis)
