  1. If you have low expectations on the fruit and veggie front for the next 6-8 weeks you will not be disappointed. Stick to your dairy, meat and carbs with a few greens thrown in and you can't go wrong. I picked up some mozzarella at Dupont last week that was divine.
  2. Since moving back home, I have gotten into a routine to just hop in my car and venture to places that I hope are interesting, and delicious. I try not to do to much research, cause I relish in the discovery of a new, and exciting spot. Easton Public Market did not disappoint. My plan was to head toward Fishtown, but made a left and 77 miles later I landed in Easton. I knew there was a Crayola factory downtown, but I had no idea the abundance of gourmet gems. My first stop was at Bank St Creamery, located in the the alley way just around the corner of the public market. Bank St Creamery, once know as the Purple Cow Creamery, was started by a husband and wife team back in 1998. Their small batch, high quality ingredient of rich ice creams serve traditional flavors like vanilla, but have local favorites like Orange bergamot, and Easton bisque. I didn't try the Easton Bisque, but should have. I think it may be similar to the Old Bay Caramel at the Charmery in Hampden, Md. Next stop, the Public Market. Right inside the door to your left there is a ramen joint, and the the right a Fish monger. As I walked deeper into the market, I knew I had landed in a delicious spot. There was a kitchen space toward the end of the market that offered classes to which I grabbed a flyer, and plan on revisiting and taking. I rounded the corner, and a wine bar was the perfect spot to rest and sample the offerings. Tolino Winery is a located in Bangor, Pa, and is family owned and operated. I had no idea there were an abundance of wineries in Pennsylvania. I learned that Chambourcin is a varietal that is common to the Mid- Atlantic .After being poured a glass, I was able to roam the Market. I glided over to Chocodiem. By far the best chocolates I have had to date. These Belgian chocolates have won numerous awards, and is endorsement by Jacque Torres, the ever charming Mr Chocolate himself. I recall Chocodiem recently opening an outpost in Clinton, NJ. The chocolates are divine. I rounded out my tasteventure with a stop at Scratch. Scatch is a farm to table pizzeria and brewery. The margherita pizza was amazing . Most of the ingredients they use are sourcedlocally, one of them being Apple Ridge Farm in Saylorsburg, Pa. On their website they list where all of the ingredients come from, and answers the calling to eating responsibly. I didn't try the brews, or spirits on account I already was two glasses in with wine. This gives me an excuse to come back and try several more of the offerings Easton Public Market has to offer. Overall, outstanding. Roaming gourmet, kat
  3. This is probably more appropriate in the farmers market forum, but I wanted to put it where people would see it since it's time sensitive. I have the usual problem of hosting my dinner club this Saturday and needing to find local produce by mid-week in order to prep in advance. Unfortunately I now also can't skip out of work early to hit Riverdale on Thursday like I normally would. Does anyone know of a market in DC or MD preferably on a Wednesday (could also consider Tuesday) that has an abundance and variety of produce? Specifically I am looking for plenty of corn, nectarines, tomatoes (heirloom, cherry, etc.) and watermelon. The corn seems to be the most problematic.
  4. Until I can find time to fix my Toronto write-up fiasco, I shall, instead, share the wonders of this outdoor, year-round Farmers Market, located in the lovely Union Square Park. Apparently, Union Square Greenmarket has been open since 1976. The vendors vary, depending on the day you visit, and the link has detailed maps and vendor listings. Even on a rainy, wet, Saturday, such as two weekends ago, many shoppers came to visit familiar vendors and delight in the local wares available. During the holiday season, there is also a nice, twice the size as DC's, Christmas Market. I liked the fact that Wafels & Dinges had a booth there. But I digress. I really wanted to share about the Pennsylvania Dutch pretzel booth vendor. Although I like the Snyder-version, it's not quite the same as those I've found in the short time I worked in Philly; so it was rather nice to come across solidly made, really dip-able, not crumble when drinking with beer-type of Pennsylvania Dutch pretzels, as sold by Martin's Pretzels. You can order online, too. At the booth, you can get pretzel tins, or broken pieces (salted vs. unsalted) by the pound. I wanted to write this place up, as finally finishing the last bits of my $2 (about 1/4 pound?) bag of unsalted makes me realize that I am craving for more, well-made pretzels, I guess. I also got to sample some really good, rich, Grade A, Very Dark with strong taste Vermont maple syrup from Deep Mountain Maple that I cannot wait to use. You can also order from them online. This is a really nice farmers market to have nearby, for those living in New York City.
  5. This market is located in the parking lot of the Charlotte Hall library on Rt. 5 in St. Mary's county. It is open Monday-Saturday all day during peak season, with fewer days per week in April/November, and closed in winter. As far as I can tell, all of the vendors are local Amish farmers. Parking in the library lot can be a hassle on busy Saturdays. The market offers "classic" produce - not a place to find exotic or heirloom items, and I've never seen anything advertised as organic. Spring and summer crops show up here a week or two earlier than at the markets I've been to closer to DC. In addition to produce, there are vendors that offer baked goods, including shoo-fly pie (and other pies), cookies, breads, rolls, and whoopie pies. There is a selection of jams, jellies, and preserved items also. There is very little in the way of meat or dairy, although I've seen one or two vendors with a small quantity of churned butter available.
  6. There is a new gluten free vendor at the Middletown Farmer's Market (off of Rt 40A, between Frederick and Boonsboro). Casey Sisters Sweets https://www.facebook.com/CaseySistersSweets makes only gluten free breads, cakes, cookies, cupcakes, etc. The selection changes each week and they are available for custom work. The market's hours are Thursdays, from 3 to 6 pm. http://www.local-farmers-markets.com/market/2262/middletown/middletown-farmers-market Disclosure: I know one of the Casey sisters through L'Academie de Cuisine. She is completing her externship at Tabard and training under Pastry Chef Huw Griffiths. I have personally tried and enjoyed her gluten free pastries. They taste remarkably close to conventional wheat products.
  7. We would like to welcome you to Central Farm Markets! I have seen some posts about our markets so I thought I would take this opportunity to give you a place to chat and give us feedback. We have four markets, Bethesda Central Sundays, 9-1pm, Pike Central, Thursdays 11-3 pm and Saturdays 9-2pm and Northwest Central, Fridays from 2-6pm. We have over 54 wonderful vendors, including the best fish monger in town and artisan food producers.
