  1. I went to Dead Rabbit for the first time last night. The cocktails were quite good. We got there in time for the $1 oyster special (5-7 M-F upstairs, IIRC) and while they were good, they were rather poorly shucked. Downstairs, it was hectic but kind of fun.
  2. we had a good meal at plouf about a year ago: good mussels, good flatiron steak, wine, etc. it's in an alley with a couple of other restaurants that try to lure you in. outdoor seating, but we prefer it inside with the swordfish. this is not one of the very best restaurants in the city, but we enjoyed it as much as the slanted door (a totally different scene, not modern). it is off bush, a couple of blocks down from the gate to chinatown on the left heading down into the financial district, an easy walk from union square.
  3. I recently had a chance to visit Bottega Louie, a bright, cavernous space in The Brockman Building on South Grand that is both a gourmet market and restaurant. The large open floor and high ceilings plan gives the place a certain vibrancy, with an accompanying noise level that you might expect from such a large room. I took a seat at the 10 stool bar in the front closer to the market and quite enjoyed the Cioppino, which also cost $30. It was a full bowl of succulent seafood, that contained perhaps the most plump mussels I have ever been served. Truly satisfying.

What's that you say? You want a velvet rope limiting access to that rooftop bar on weekends? You're not going to believe this, but that is exactly what they do at The Standard. Let's say it's 4 o'clock in the morning and for some reason your forgot to eat dinner the night before and you are super hungry. You're screwed, right? Not at The Standard, because they have a restaurant that is open 24/7. I mean, it's never closed. Conveniently located downtown two blocks from the 7th Street / Metro Center Station. The room rates can vary, but is always on the list of places to check when price shopping. You could do worse. Don't believe me? Just go ask Mr. and Mrs. Smith. They got pictures.

I've been reading about the convoluted history behind Delmonico's, and although complex, it's almost funny how historic this institution is: Inventors (or claimed inventors) of Delmonico Steak, Chicken à la King, Eggs Benedict, Lobster Newburg, and Baked Alaska; the first à la carte menu in a restaurant (as opposed to the table d'hôte formula), the first separate wine list, patrons including Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain, and apparently the first restaurant to seat women in separate parties. Granted, the current iteration has absolutely *nothing* to do with the original, which opened in 1827, but the new owners - currently a partnership called "Ocinomled, Ltd." - have attempted to recreate the atmosphere and feel. Their Wikipedia entry alone is worth a read - I don't know anyone who has actually eaten here, but it seems to still be very popular among tourists seeking a little slice of our nation's culinary history. Given that the location and ownership have nothing to do with the original, it probably shouldn't be included in our Oldest Restaurants List, but how do you leave it off? Ironically, the current website - full of puffery - has the opening date wrong by ten years.
  7. Leland Estes has departed from Menomale, the fine little pizzeria pillbox in Brookland (near Catholic University in Washington, DC), where he assembled a wonderful little beer program. He is now GM of Clinton Hall, a beer garden near the World Trade Center. I don't know Leland personally, but if his prior work is any indication, this is New York's gain; DC's loss.
  8. I went to Quince a year ago and it was brilliant; by far the best meal I had in SF. Resembled a dressed-up version of Komi more than any Italian restaurant in DC. Very intimate & elegant, with proper but friendly service and small menu where everything was a highlight.
