  1. I just got an invitation from the folks who run Trummers on Main in Clifton to their soft opening this week. I plan to go there for dinner on Friday evening. The actual soft opening starts today with the real opening on Monday 7/13/09. The Web site is here: http://www.trummersonmain.com/ and there's a blog site by the owners here: http://www.stefantru.../blog-text.htm. With a chef from the French Laundry, maybe this will be a nice place. I'll file a full report after I visit the place, unless someone else gets there first. The number for reservations is 703.266.1623. One warning, neither Web site above is up to date. clearly the owners have been spending their time making the restaurant work. Wayne Rash
  2. Late last week the following message was posted to our U-Street area email group: Some questions were answered at last night's ANC1B meeting on the application for a new restaurant at 1825 14th Street. The placard described the restaurant as "serving Mediterranean fusion cuisine with a focus on Latin and Asian Tapas." At last night's meeting attorney Andrew Kline disclosed that the restauranteur is Richard Sandoval and the chef is Kazuhiro Okochi. Here are links to explore on each of these partners: Richard Sandoval: www.modernmexican.com Kazuhiro Okochi: www.kazsushibistro.com Sandoval already has a presence here in DC with Zengo in Gallery Place. Capacity is estimated at 140 and will also feature a sidewalk cafe with seating for 25. CSNA review of the application will be on the April 9th agenda. The concept -- "Mediterranean fusion cuisine with a focus on Latin and Asian Tapas" -- sounds pretty circa 1995 and I wouldn't have paid much attention had I not seen Kazuhiro's name attached to the project. Now all of the sudden it sounds interesting. Anyone know anything about it?
  3. I'm planning happy hour on a Wednesday evening in early April for my office's current and previous classes of law fellows. We've previously done these at La Tasca, Oyamel, Cactus Cantina, and Paradiso in Georgetown. I usually try to choose somewhere close to the Metro anyway, but now my boss has said "somewhere ten people can easily talk, i.e. not a table in the middle of the bar," which says to me not my favorite long table with lime-foam mojito at Oyamel. I'd rather not do La Tasca, and was thinking about either Dino's Grotto or Bluejacket. Would either of those work on the conversation front (I've been to Bluejacket once and suspect that it might not), or do people have other suggestions?
  4. After a couple "meh" experiences at other sushi spots around town, I have seen the truth, and it is Hori-san's sushi rice. I absolutely cannot bring myself to get excited about eating sushi anywhere else. Yes, yes, the fish is superb, impeccably prepared, and seasoned such that your soy sauce and freshly grated wasabi stare on longingly as you neglect them throughout the meal. But that rice. So perfectly seasoned, juuuuust sweet enough, and never overpacked or structurally unsound. I honestly think you do yourself a disservice by ordering sashimi at Kata. As far as I can tell, the play is to get an appetizer or two (chicken skewers 3 ways, miso eggplant, and the ceviche wouldn't be a bad way to go), and then ask for an omakase sushi from the chef with as few or many pieces as you feel like. We've done this both from the sushi bar and the tables.
  5. You're still on top, Jeff. Would anyone like to congregate next Wednesday, Jul 19? Say 5 PM for an opening gambit? Let's try and get ten people here for this. Jeff, text me if you want to talk.
  6. ISO recommendations. I'm going to finish an appointment in the vicinity of 13th and K NW around 4:15, then need to be at the S. Dillon Ripley Center (near the Smithsonian Castle) by 6:30. Need something approximating dinner in that time. Happy hour snacks at a bar would be fine. Will be on foot so wherever it is, I need time to walk to the Ripley after. (It takes me about 15-20 minutes from, say, the Partisan). Don't mind catching a cab if I must but would rather trust my own two feet. It doesn't help that the national xmas tree lighting is tonight (oy), so I'd really like to stay away from that event horizon. Help?
  7. All-- My friend and I love to go out to all of the various restaurants in the area (low price to high price, DC to VA, steak joints to tapas) and we are looking for something to mix it up a bit and I wanted y'alls advice. Specifically, I need some advice on places that can do any of the following-- 1. Offer tasting menus (Restaurant Eve, Maestro, etc)--either long (9 courses) or short (a few courses) 2. Have special pricing that allow for tasting a variety of things--such as Restaurant Tosca that has a 3 course $32 special from 5:30-7:00pm, or Charlie Palmers offering Restaurant Week pricing for lunch, or some place that may have a special deal to attract people on Mondays, etc. 3. Do something whimsical akin to #1 like Minibar, Cafe Atlantico's Latin Dim Sum brunch, 2941 "tapas on the terrace", or Tallulas minibites, or some place that takes a seasonal cuisine/vegetable and makes a menu out of it (say a menu using pumpkin) 4. Have cooking classes where you get to eat interactively (Galileo, Equinox, Oval Room, etc) I am especially keen on #2, which would allow us to try more restaurants and food on a tighter budget w/o having to blow a wad on #1's all the time. I am NOT interested in half priced burger specials of happy hour specials (though they have their merit). Thanks in advance, Nashman
  8. Indian food is one of my favorites, so when a friend invited me to join her for lunch at Diya I was a little surprised: I'd never even heard of it. But I'm always happy to try something new. The first thing that struck me about Diya was the smell - like a hotel ballroom, except in the bar, which smelled like bleach. The second thing was the size. It's huge. But whatever. It's the food that's important, right? The buffet that day had vegetable fritters, yellow dal, saag paneer, channa, aloo gobhi, salad and a few different chutneys, raita, goat curry, tandoori chicken, butter chicken, one or two other savory things that I didn't try, and kheer and gulab jamun for sweets. "All the safe choices for an American audience," I thought snarkily. "Except for goat curry. That's promising." So how did it taste? Bland. Brown. Boring. Muddy. Mediocre. If I'd closed my eyes only texture would have told me what I was eating. Not one dish had the complexity and vibrancy that makes Indian cuisine so enticing. Later I queried several other friends, friends whose judgement I trust, food-loving friends, friends who post on this board. Everyone said it's a really good restaurant. So I suppose I was just a victim of an office worker style lunch buffet. In Diya's defense, I'll state that I haven't yet eaten anything wortwhile at an Indian buffet (including Masala Art, my current favorite), with the exception of the late, lamented Connaught Place, torn down by the City of Fairfax in order to create a parking lot, may it rest in peace (the restaurant, not the parking lot). Has anyone else been to Diya? Care to defend it? Tell me that it was an off day or that I need to go for dinner instead?
  9. My girlfriend and I are 50 something and find ourselves suddenly single at the same time. We love good food, however now we are looking for happy hour places downtown where we can have a well crafted cocktail, maybe doing some chatting and then follow it up with a good meal. Any thoughts?
  10. Anyone try this place out in what could be becoming a dining mecca? For anyone with an inkling of historical knowledge, this pairing of cuisines should be very interesting. There used to be a branch of Zed's out in Gainesville, we went a few times with the kids, and the food was good, but the location was abysmal and they were probably a couple years too early. 11. Thanks to all the guests at Passage to India, Bethesda whose continued patronage and support encouraged me to open my second restaurant SpiceXing in Rockville Town Square. The menu features contemporary Indian dishes and a lot of dishes influenced by the foreign cultures that came to settle/rule the Indian subcontinent. Once again the recipes are original as collected by me from various households and I am indebted to all those friends who tolerated my persistence in US and in India. There are a lot of small plates, which make sharing several of them quite enjoyable. Look forward to meeting all the DonRockwellians in Rockville. Sudhir Seth www.spicexing.com
  12. This is very short notice, but I figured I'd give it a shot. My wife and I have to be at Washington-Lee High school tonight at 7 pm and were looking to kill some time after work somewhere between there and Crystal CIty/Pentagon City. The school right off 66 near Wilson Blvd and N Quincy St. We'll be traveling through or near Rosslyn, Clarendon, Colonial Village, Lyon Village, and Virginia Square. I'm not very familiar with this area and the Dinning Guide / Restaurant Guide has A LOT of options! Does any place stand out as a good place to get a couple apps and a drink? Thanks!
  13. I mentioned this in the TMB thread, but I wanted to post for all to see - Jason and I are hosting a happy hour to benefit Team In Training, which is the main fundraising wing of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I am a multiple-time cancer survivor, and Jason lost his grandmother earlier this year to multiple myeloma, so this is a cause that is very near and dear to our hearts. There will also be a 50/50 raffle, in which 50% of the take goes to TNT and the other 50% goes to the winner! So, the more tickets you buy, the bigger the pot AND the greater your chances of winning. We'll also have some gift cards and prizes to raffle off throughout the event. We'll be in the upstairs portion of The Big Board, so head that way if you plan on coming - we hope you will! Thanks so much - let me know if you have questions. Betty
