  1. We are having a 60th birthday party for my mother next weekend, and am looking for a decent bakery in the Fairfield County area (specifically Trumbull/Fairfield/Westport) to pick up a cake. Unfortunately, we are flying up from DC, so no chance of bringing a homemade one up there on the put-put plane...and my parents don't bake (my husband almost died when he found that we had no measuring cups and the measuring spoons were all in chinese...). Thanks!
  2. I just came across the Culinary Arts Museum at Johnson & Wales University in the "Where Have All The Diners Gone?" article posted in the Greek-Italian Diners thread. Despite having grown up in RI and still visiting several times a year, I had never heard of this museum, but I thought others might be interested to check it out if they find themselves in the Ocean State. Also, I always love to promote anything RI-related. If I make it there myself I'll report back!
  3. In case you haven't noticed, I tend not to print "news stories" here unless they're one of two things: 1) Of personal interest to me 2) Really important This is *really* important. "CVS To Buy Aetna for $69 Billion in a Deal that May Reshape the Health Care Industry" by Michael J. de la Merced and Reed Abelson on nytimes.com I wonder how long CVS, which has been opening like Starbucks, has been eyeing something such as this - they couldn't have done it if they weren't already geographically positioned. Welcome to Hell on Earth, redefined.
  4. Then please start promoting coffee milk! This needs to become a thing in DC. For anyone not familiar with coffee milk, here's a little explanation. I've been drinking a homemade version of this for years, without realizing it's a thing with a name (I'm not from Rhode Island). Grind coffee beans and steep them in water in the refrigerator for two days, strain, freeze in ice cube trays, and store in a zipper baggie in the freezer. Two cubes in a glass, microwaved at 20% power for two minutes, will melt without warming. Add sugar and milk and there you go, awesome mid-afternoon buzz on days you don't want a hot beverage.
