Just realized that there was no thread for Ekiben, which was an oversight on my part. Though I haven't actually visited their brick and mortar, I have partaken of their bao sandwiches at the Charm City Cross cyclocross race (excellent post-race refuel), Hampdenfest, and at the 83 farmers market. The baos are reliably tasty, though frequently overstuffed and unwieldy; I wouldn't be mad if they split one bao into two smaller bites and sold them as a pair. In some ways, Ekiben reminds me of my beloved late Shophouse---similar spice level, flavor, and relative level of accessibility. I do need to stop into the brick and mortar location at some point soon to scratch the itch, but I'm glad that the 83 market has reopened for the season so I can visit them there if I don't make it all the way to Fells!
It doesn't look like there'a a thread for it yet, so I wanted to start one for Bandoola Bowl in Georgetown, at 1069 Wisconsin Ave (just towards the river from M Street). Bandoola Bowl specializes in Burmese and southeast Asian - style salads, recently adding noodle and rice bowls as well, at least on a seasonal basis. Opened and run by the family that used to run Mandalay in Silver Spring. I am totally rooting for this place to succeed. Everything I have eaten here has been fresh and delicious, including the ginger salad, roasted pork salad (both the salad and noodle bowl), and chicken salad -- flavors and textures both great, and everything is customizable though they'll definitely make recommendations. All of the dressings I have tried have been excellent (the green "garden" dressing that comes on the chicken salad is a definite favorite - I asked what was in it, and the answer was lots of herbs). Everyone who I have come across that works there is unbelievably friendly and helpful. If you're a return customer, you'll likely be welcomed back with a smile and asked if you've tried something that may be new on their menu or a special. If you're new, you'll likely (based on personal observation at least, definitely) be offered tastes and recommendations. I totally love this place. Just to clarify a bit, there are actually two different restaurants in two different locations each: Fatty 'Cue, which has a Brooklyn and a West Village (Carmine St.) location, and Fatty Crab, with a West Village (Hudson St.) location, as well as the one on the upper west side, that Don refers to above. The menus, and the restaurants themselves, are quite different. The W. Village location of Fatty 'Cue received 2 stars from the Times, and is my favorite of the group. For a while, it was a pop-up called Fatty Johnson's, during the renovation process. It also has the best bar/cocktails of all 4 places; the bartenders here really know their stuff.
