What do people think of "Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee," the web series on the Crackle network by Jerry Seinfeld? I've only watched a few episodes, but it has recently caught my eye, and I'm kind of falling in love with it. Such a simple premise: two funny comedians, one interesting car, and beautiful cinematography of such mundane things as coffee coming out of an espresso machine. The episodes are about 15-minutes long, and if they were any longer, it would detract from them because, like "Seinfeld," it's essentially a "show about nothing." So I guess there's really not much to say about it other than a thumbs up or a thumbs down. Thumbs up from me - in limited doses for sure, sort of like a "Word-A-Day Calendar." Plus if you go to the home page, the entire series is right there in front of you, and free-of-charge (there's one (annoyingly repetitive) ad before each episode). This is, I believe, the only complete compendium of restaurants visited during this series on the entire internet. No other website would be able to identify the restaurants (I have to say, I'm pretty proud of myself for Baked By Melissa in Season 2, Episode 3). Season 1 1. "Between Two Ferns" is extremely funny, and Zach Galifianakis is a gifted comedian - I recently saw him on an episode of "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" (now on Netflix), and it was one of the better episodes of that series. So here I am flipping channels on the cable box when I accidentally wander into the broadcast network zone, and hear a familiar noise on Fox. That gravelly, husky sound. The perky attitude. Yes, it's Rachael Ray, and her show. (Tells you how often I watch broadcast...last time I checked, she was still on Food Network.) I stare, transfixed in horror. What have you done with the original, cute, harmless Rachael Ray, talking alone to the camera? Or travelling to distant cities, inappropriately moaning over a bargain dessert? In her place there is the new RR. Her makeup and wardrobe assistants have decided that with her new look she should channel Sally Field circa 1976. There is an audience. Routinely, the camera switches to a reaction shot of their strangely synchronous applause. I think they're on loan from the Emeril show, but they must have eaten earlier - no lip-smacking going on. Rachael is cheerfully extolling the virtues of lemons. She zests one vigorously over some rice. She grips another and shows the audience her special squeeze - cut-side-up, so the juice runs down the rind and drips off the perky pointy end. I step into the kitchen for a spot of breakfast. That's when hell, previously wearing a Joker-like rictus and chained to a four-burner stove, breaks loose. From the other room, I can hear the TV. A mother is complaining about her daughter's suggestive wardrobe. The daughter giggles that her mom is old and wears '80s clothing. A voice asks the mom who is buying her income-less adolescent these clothes. That voice. A cloud of dread forms as I realize...the show hasn't changed. It's RR solving domestic disputes a la Rikki Lake. Or maybe Jerry Springer, or whoever it is that does that kind of thing. I change the channel quickly and find a Ken Burns documentary to clear my mind. But the nightmare remains. "I'm Rachael Ray! On today's show, we're going to rescue an 1100 pound French chef trapped in his apartment! And I'll show you how to make a delicious cous-cous! On the Rachael Ray show!" -
My brief, initial impressions of replacing Stuart with Noah: risky, but potentially brilliant. Risky, because the American audience - though it *thinks* it was hungering for intelligent, educated, well-informed, political satire, was possibly hungering merely for intelligent, educated, well-informed, political satire from an *American point-of-view*, and Noah's much-more-global perspective might be a little *too* educated for the American mass viewership. I'm pretty sure it's what *I* want (Hell, take Jon Stewart, and throw several languages and ethnicities into the mix, and blend it all with Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and POW! You have the perfect satire, if, if, if, Trevor Noah can pull this off with the fearless bravado that the great Jon Stewart so masterfully did for 16+ years - oh my goodness Stewart was excellent in this role!) I have two polar-opposite scenarios in my mind: 1) Trevor Noah raising American audiences up to his level. Viewership will sink at first, simply because there is nothing like this on television. If Comedy Central can withstand the pressure of declining ratings (and if Noah sticks to his guns, ratings *will* decline in the short-, perhaps medium-term), this could be looked upon as one of the most brilliant moves in the history of television, and The Educating Of America. 2) Trevor Noah dumbing down his routine to conform with the current level of American viewership, which may result in an *increased* audience at first, mainly due to curiosity, but will ultimately die a slow death because this will be going against Noah's grain, and he won't be able to pull it off. If this show is to be a long-term success with Noah as host, American viewers will need to raise their game - and you know what? It's the same way I feel about this website, because I refuse to dumb it down to pander to boneheads just so I can get a larger audience. *The audience can educate themselves and come up to our level*, or they can go read Eater and The Washington Post. We have the chance to become the world's leader in political satire; not just for American politics, but for World politics. Let's do it, Damn It! Why shouldn't we better ourselves? Stewart was awesome, but I have to think that even *he* would be in favor of this as a long-term strategy. I'm as excited about this visionary selection as I am the Nationals signing Max Scherzer. Yes, it's one hell of a gamble, but what truly great thing isn't?

I'm hoping someone unbiased and reasonable can help me sort out "The Tonight Show" fiasco involving Conan O'Brien and Jay Leno. I've seen mostly four people (all four of whom openly make fun of Jay Leno's physical attributes - his high voice, his chin, etc.), and three out of the four - in my opinion - seem like they walked out of a circus freak show: David Letterman, Howard Stern, and Conan O'Brien. The fourth, Jimmy Kimmel, doesn't have any physical characteristics to mock, but he comes across as very mean. Of the four, I see net worths, respectively, of $400 million, $600 million, $85 million, and $35 million. Of the four, I see absolutely no talent, and absolutely no likability. If you ask me, "Then why are they so rich and popular," I will direct you to a certain someone who got 40 million votes. All four accuse - viciously accuse - Jay Leno of being predatory, and hatefully mock his physical features. There's one thing about both Jay Leno and Jimmy Fallon that none of the four can claim: a gentle, audience likability factor. Maybe Leno aggressively tried to get his show back instead of (as Howard Stern or David Letterman would put it) "being a man and moving to another network." How on earth does that make you a man? Leno didn't want to relinquish that job, and NBC gave it back to him. So what? None of these four people have any credibility (or talent) in my eyes, and they are all despicable to me. So, would someone here - someone reasonable and objective - please explain to me why Jay Leno is so hated ... or is he, outside of just a small handful of multi-millionaire would-be Tonight Show hosts?

Have you been watching Colbert lately? Over the last couple of weeks, for the first time, The Late Show has better ratings than The Tonight Show. His monologues are funny yet pointed. His take on the Flynn fiasco: it's funny cause it's treason "Sean Spicer, the M.C. Escher of bullshit." LOL -
In case anyone didn't know, last night was the final night of "Late Show with David Letterman" né "Late Night with David Letterman."
