  1. Having urged Bill to try Marigold Kitchen, I guess I should chime in to add that from my one experience, Marigold Kitchen is as fine a dining experience as I've had in months. I had that same lamb dish Bill ordered and thought it was superb. The halibut was 50% cheaper and 100% better than the halibut I had the night before at the ridiculously expensive Striped Bass. The clam-chowder risotto was fabulous, and the amazing grilled-cheese is legitimate charity at $8. Marigold Kitchen is BYOB, so there is zero corkage for bringing your own wine - it would be difficult, if not impossible, to spend $50 a person here. And the service was even better than the food - this place goes atop my list of 2005 restaurants. Cheers, Rocks.
  2. The gem in this report is that Eater Philly's erroneous use of the Greek Delta amounts to "STD Burger."
  3. have been to Distrito (the newest Jose Garces joint) a couple of times now...it's kind of like a hot pink oyamel (literally). politburo and i happened to be there a few nights after Garces beat the blue-corn-and-mango-chutney king on iron chef, and he was serving a tuna toro ceviche that we were told he made on IC. meh - the toro wasn't nearly as luxurious as i was expecting. the most outstanding things we tried on the menu have been filete de atun tacos (tuna, papaya, carrot, chayote, wasabi aoli, peanut) which come in a pair, and the esquites (sweet corn, queso fresco, chipotle, lime). i'd skip the bone marrow, which was a complete waste of $7 (had to pick out the bone marrow with a fork, which was an awful utensil to serve it with, and hardly any marrow inside the bone), especially after just being at Ansill and totally loving the bone marrow dish there (already out of the bone, it was fried and the you spread it like butter over toasted bread )... service was probably the worst part of our visits there. servers were always bringing out dishes that weren't ours, and when i asked multiple times about dishes that we were supposed to get, our server told us not to worry and that they would be coming out very soon. we never got the dishes, yet they were on our bill at the end of the night. though, i do have to mention that we were given free churros at the end of the night because of the service mishaps. i still think i'd prefer to go to tinto...
  4. If your from Philadelphia, or just know it well, you've probably heard of the White Dog Cafe in University city. A lovely and large townhome (200 seats), it is made intimate by it's many nooks and crannies and worn yet warm wooden floors. It's founder, owner and resident, Judy Wicks, has announced she is moving on and will turn the restaurant over. I'm posting this because even if you've never been there, you may be interested to learn about Ms. Wicks and her uncomprimising means of bringing food to your plate in the most ethical and earth- conscious ways possible. She has been a beacon for food sustainability, fair trade, eco-friendly practices and social responsibility for 24 years. The restaurant's mission has always been the aformentioned goals of Ms. Wicks, first and foremost. The food is second, but always solid. It's a wonderful overall experience though, and should be on travel agendas should you find yourself in the City of Brotherly Love. I'm looking forward to reaquainting myself (window table in the piano room)with the WDC when the new and hopefully more food driven leadership is in place. Meanwhile, I'll comfort myself with the cooking.
