  1. Hello Everyone, I would like to have a forum where someone could post an idea for a small format cooking class in their home. By cooking class- I mean someone has an idea of something they would like to learn how to make and are willing to do some trial and error with people to help in that process; or someone is good at something and wouldn't mind showing other people how to do it; or a combination of the two. I really learn better when I am interacting in a class and not just watching YouTube or etc, and making the item helps me build my confidence that I can do it on my own. I often find that many cooking classes are either (1) for couples (2) for kids (3) for people below my skill level or (4) a series in which I can't commit to the time and number of classes. I know there are people on this site that can make a lot of things I would like to learn to make. I am also willing to offer up my own skills if there is something I can make someone else would like to learn. For instance, I have never made homemade Bao Buns. It doesn't look incredibly hard, and I wouldn't mind doing it, but I feel like it would be more fun with a few people. I also would LOVE to learn how to make Saltenas, and feel that this is maybe a little above my skill level until I see, interact in doing it once or twice, but I likely need someone with more skill than me who has made it before. There are all sorts of things like this. And I have a decent size kitchen, and would be willing to host a few classes if people could make it to Alexandria, and would be willing to go somewhere else if someone else wanted to host. Anyway, I wanted to have a forum for this sort of thing, so here it is, if there are any like minded soles, speak up and we can figure out what we want to make and when.

Would anyone be interested in meeting up at Xi'an Gourmet in Rockville to explore the menu? http://www.xiangourmetmd.com/menu.aspx I'd prefer a weekend because this is a bit of a drive for me in weeknight traffic, but could maybe do a weeknight if it were a bit on the later side. This coming weekend (March 9-10) is totally open for me, but after that I have a moderate preference for Sunday evenings.

  4. The location is set. True to his word, everyone take a moment to thank @DonRocks. The picnic is set for July 29 at Carderock Picnic Pavillion. I have not had the joy of attending any of the past picnics, but as the lead in this, YOU CAN COUNT ON ME being at this one. The only "price" of admission is that you are a registered member of the forum. WIN WIN, I say. I can only imagine the deliciousness everyone will be bringing to this event. I am actually looking forward to seeing some old friends, and walking away with new ones.   6. There have been several short-term cancellations for organized events lately, and it is entirely my fault for not having come up with a policy. So here it is, effective 11 PM, July 27th, 2005: 1) For any organized event, you must cancel at least 72 hours (three days) prior to the event. Otherwise you need to pay 100% of the cost unless there's a waiting list and your seat(s) can be filled. 2) Anyone not doing 1) can't come to any more events. I know that sounds a bit harsh, but Hillvalley has been putting a great deal of time into organizing these events, and that time needs to be respected, as does the revenue that restaurants count on when reserving tables for us. From this point forward, everyone is starting with a clean slate, and no harm has been done. I take the blame for any infractions up until now. Thank you! Rocks.
  7. Anybody up for a picnic? Traditionally the Don Rockwell Picnics are held at Fort Hunt Park, on a Sunday, at site C-2, typically noonish to late afternoon. People come and go. The event is a pot luck. Some people cook, some people buy food, some bring drinks, some bring serving stuff. Low key. Alcohol is allowed. So are pets. Children warmly encouraged. Games may be played. Of course it won't feel like a picnic without Zora. At any rate, I am up for reserving the spot. Please indicate willingness, and suggest dates. Last time I arbitrarily picked a date but usually we have a vote among the willing.
  8. First of all, do not forget lovehockey's Capitol tour on Sat, May 16 at 11 AM. Once again, we're going to close off Amoo's, either on June 7 or June 28. This will be BYOB like before - this thread is a poll to vote on a date. People are more than welcome to bring their families and friends.

  10. We're going to be having a dr.com dinner at Amoo's which, like last time, will be BYOB - we'll take over the entire restaurant, and have it all to ourselves. There will be no charge for bringing your own alcohol, but please remember that the staff must wash the stemware. They're also working on an evening they may normally have off, so please tip them generously. The tips are not going to Sebastian; they're going to the waitstaff. It would also be wonderful if people could bring their own stemware, corkscrews, etc., just like they're going to a wine tasting at someone's house. Bring plenty of wine, and share generously with your neighbors and the staff should they want any. The first order of business is determining the date. Sun, Feb 1, 2015 is Super Bowl Sunday so is out - that leaves us with two other Sundays: Jan 18, or Jan 25. While the starting time is TBD, figure it will be something "normal" - 6:30, 7, or 7:30. I favor the early end so people can get home at a reasonable hour, but that's to be determined later. If it's unanimous, we could even start earlier - 6, or even 5:30. That way, you could get home at 8 or thereabouts, and prepare yourself for the work week. So here's a poll: Please pick all dates that you can (and will) attend. Please don't answer this poll unless you're *sure* you will (not just "can," but *will* attend on the dates you select). The date has been cast in stone: Sunday, January 15, 2015. Be there or be carré. Sebastian will be serving, among other things, his famous "Stuffed Squash" dishes. I truly believe he will become renown for this fantastic dish, and I want everyone here to share in its glory. Feel free to add some input as to starting time, but please remember that not every time will accomodate everyone. This will be a wonderful dinner, an absolute bargain, and a fantastic time will be had by all.
  11. We currently have a reservation for September 28th. However, two people have chimed in and said they'd like to come, but can't make it on the 28th. This is to give them, and everyone, a fair chance. This poll will be open for four, and only four, days. I tweeted about it here, and I ask that everyone who sees this retweets my tweet so it gets around as quickly as possible. I want the date set in stone so we can start planning the actual event.   15. On Wednesday, July 17th, we'll be meeting to enjoy Lemon Sours, Beer, and Sake at Izakaya Seki. There's really no particular reason for this happy hour, other than that we'll be saying goodbye to our beloved KMango! who is moving to Dallas-Fortworth with her husband, and therefore we'll be paying tribute to one of the greatest members we've ever had! (She asked me not to make a big deal out of this, and to keep it low key, so I am going to honor her request and nix the marching band. Of course, this won't be "goodbye forever," since she'll be running our Dallas Farmers Market forum once she gets moved in and settled.) Please chime in here and say whether or not you're coming, just so the restaurant knows how big of a space to block off. I will be there.

  17. This is totally exploratory, but if you'd like to learn something about Korean food, this could be the closest you can get to Korea without travel and airport security and the TSA massage. To Sok Jip is a VERY small restaurant in Annandale. It seats about 30 people. It's always busy (trust me on this, everybody waits unless you are there 10 minutes before they open). There's a good reason for this and it comes out of the kitchen. This is some of the most authentic Korean food in the DC metro area. Now the interesting part. We would like to take no more than 8 people to To Sok Jip for dinner in early February. This will give you a chance to brush up on your Korean and think about food you'd like to try. Dinner should cost around $25 a person. Not quite a Twenty Dollar Tuesday but close. A proposed menu, shared dishes, suggestions to come. We need a serious commitment to this because if To Sok Jip makes space for us, we HAVE to be there. Dinner will be fairly early in the evening because it gets crowded very quickly. Post if you're seriously interested in attending. If we get more than 8 people initially, we will do this again. Feb 12, 2013 at 5:30pm sharp. Do not be late. Bring cash (and your appetite).   18. Guys, Ted Xenochristos has offered a tour of Cava's production facilities, including how they make their dips, braise their meats, etc. Who's interested? I want to learn how to make KRAFT aka KRAzy FeTa. Ted, Dmitri, Brett, et al, have long been supporters of this community whether you guys know it or not - let's repay them for their friendship by showing them some love. This is a can't-miss big-time product, and it seems like one that's done right.

  20. One of my favorite dining experiences was our first Quartiere dinner in Montalcino. The Quartieri are the neighborhood charitable organization that make Italian life so unique. We came to Montalcino at end of season and noticed several posters advertising various dinners for each of the four quartiere. Due to previous commitments the only one that fit our schedule was that of Quartiere Travaglio {the workers quarter}. We arrived at their Cena Di Bolliti {Bolliti refers to the meal: a boiled dinner, and to "bolliti" or hot under the collar" referring to the anger of the poor in a wealthy town. We were quickly accepted as honorary members of Travaglio and enjoyed a meal filled with great food as well as lots of love! It also allowed us to see the folks whose bars, stores and restaurants we loved enjoyed themselves on a well earned night off. Since that evening, our experience of Montalcino is vastly different than before. Every year, we stage a pretty similar meal right after the holidays. Bollito Misto, as served in Montalcino, consists of a wide variety of meats and "parts" simmered in a capon broth and served up as part of a great meal. The meal starts off with some of the simmering broth with fresh hand cut noodles & parsley. Next up was potatoes {we will add organic green beans if we can get some from Homestead Farms in Florida} served with aioli & salsa verde {In the Travaglio tradition, the potatoes were to fill the belly with a small amount of meat to follow.} Next comes the star of the evening, a platter of mixed simmered meats. Our will include Roseda brisket and tongue, D'Artagnan veal breast & capon meat, and more to be determined along with more of the aioli, salsa verde and with a non traditional mustard & horseradish mixture plus house mostarda. A fruit Jam tart is traditional, but we are leaving dessert in a TBD status. The cost of the meal is $39.00.
