  1. So Jon and Ankur thought a Sunday afternoon about 3p would be a good time for a DR invasion. Weekday evenings would also work, but I think traffic makes Sunday more likely to gather a food crowd. I'm proposing March 29th. Before I go create a topic, can I get a few people to say "sure, I'll go on that date"?
  2. Per PopVille, the restaurant space formerly known as Chipotle and Cereal Bowl will become Tino's Pizzeria. Not a lot of information available yet, not even on their website. From what I can glean from their Instagram account, they are using flour from Hayden Flour Mills, also used by Pizzeria Bianco. They will also have an octopus pizza.
  3. The only place to go right now is Scarr’s on the LES. That little write up doesn’t do it justice. Hands down the ultimate NYC pie. Also their subs and Caesar salad and natural wine list in a setting that is so throwback are perfection.
  4. Tonight, a snapshot in time, trying to shed some light on the ongoing debate. I spent nearly five hours visiting 2 Amys, Bebo, RedRocks, and Comet. A basic tomato-and-cheese pie was ordered at each. The results were clear: 1. Comet 2. RedRocks 3. 2 Amys 4. Bebo Details - and pictures - forthcoming.   5. A coworker is touting the quality of Vace's pizza, saying it's the best slice in the city. Having never been, and not seeing a thread for it here, I ask for your opinions.   6. When this place opened in the spring, I had no interest whatsoever in trying it out even though I'm a pizzaholic. It just looked like a place that would serve canned toppings. However, they had a special $7 for a solo pizza with one topping and $1 for a can of soda. I couldn't resist plus knowing that Pete's A Pizza was gone. Well, this place is actually pretty good. The sauce and cheese tastes good and my fresh mushroom topping hit the spot. The crust was just okay -- a sauce and cheese delivery mechanism. I've been there twice and it has been pretty empty. I just hope they are getting the post-bar closing weekend crowds. I also treasure this place because I know my pizza will always be freshly made. I don't have to worry about getting a dried up reheated slice like I did at Pete's and at Bronx Pizza. Please try it out before they close for good. I'm plan on going once a week for lunch.
  7. There's a Coming Soon sign at this building in Clarendon (near the corner of Wilson and Washington Blvd). The website says coming in early 2007 though, so I guess it's still a ways off from opening. Anyone know anything about this place?
  8. They just opened their Reston location Friday - apparently have another coming soon to Tysons and one already open in DC according to their website. On good word, the place was packed, food was pretty good. It is situated on the main promenade diagonally across from Clydes in the old Paolo's (then Neyla) space. Indoor and outdoor seating is also nice, the latter being close to the main fountain at RTC. Appear to have around 25 locations throughout the US. Part of the FOX Restaurant Group which also has a FlowerChild location in DC.
  9. 4813 Beauregard St, Alexandria, VA 22312 There is a saying in the wine industry: "It takes a lot of cold beer to make good wine!" My corollary to that is it takes a lot of junky pizza delivery to make a happy home. Our local pizza joint is Valentino's and we have only done delivery. The crust is nice: thick for a thin crust, chewy, yo can taste the yeast and salt. They don't use a lot of sauce. The ingredients are better than they have to be for out in the hinterlands. We have had a roman special a vegetarian and a Valentino's special and all were good. We accidentally got a large instead of our usual small. The result is for $8 extra we have a huge breakfast/lunch for tomorrow. Delivery is quick and the online ordering especially easy.
  10. Stopped by 7th Hill Pizza (next to Montmartre) a couple of hours ago. I walked in to look around, and they're giving away slices of pizza. I thought the pizza was pretty good (nice brick oven). Apparently they're still lacking an inspection before they can open for business fully. I'll be back when they are.

  12. how Tom S. could give Opera two stars is beyond me. The food was pretty bad as I remember and we were quite limited as the table next to us steered us away from the pasta dishes. Best U street meal has been at Coppies Organic.
  13. Frankly . . . Pizza! is a mobile, wood-fired brick pizza oven run by Frank Linn, who makes pizzas at the Kensington Farmers Market (Saturdays 8-12) and other spots around the Kensington area (listed on his Twitter feed). It's not a truck, but a stand with a pizza oven on wheels. He uses high-quality, fresh ingredients to produce tasty, artisan-style pizzas. A worthy addition to the ranks of pizzaioli making pizzas in the Neapolitan style in the area, I've had the classic Margherita and the Mushroom (crimini mushrooms, mozzarella, Gruyere, porcini oil), which are both delicious and amongst the best Neapolitan style pizzas in the area. They're also a couple bucks cheaper than similar pizzas in the area, given the mobile set-up, so that's a bit of an added bonus. He usually offers around six or seven selections any given day. The pizzas re-heat nicely in a 400 degree oven for 5 minutes. For those into the details, the crust has a nice char, the cornichione has a nice crusty bread quality with a pleasing crumb (though sometimes has a bit too much width), the toppings are nicely balanced and good quality. The Margheritas tend not to have much of the drooping/soggy center problem folks often object to with Neapolitan pizza, the Mushroom has a bit if it sits long enough, but I don't have a problem with that. web site: http://www.frankly-pizza.com/

  15. MOD Pizza has opened in the KIMCO side. It is the first restaurant to open as part of the renovation. I need to visit a few more times before I pass judgment though. It is certainly nice to have a new place to be able to walk to. Will also be nice once the other new spots start to open along with the movie theater.

    Pizzeria Mozza

    My friend in Hollywood told me that there is a place there called Pizzeria Mozza which may have the best pizza in the world- topping even pizzeria bianco. has anyone on this board been there? my friend said the baker nancy silverton spent 5 years researching on how to make the perfect crust. the restaurant is co-owned by mario batali. my friend said the wait to get reservations in about a month (for pizza!?!). he also said they opened an Italian osteria next door serving more pasta that has an amazing mozzarella bar.   18. @eatruneat and I were feeling good, but in need of a snack after doing a wine tasting at A Litteri and scoring several bottles - seriously, if you like Italian wine, you need to check out A Litteri. They won an award as the best selection of Italian wine outside of Italy a few years ago. Anyway, we sat down at the bar and were warmly greeted by co-owner Antonio. I ordered a glass of wine and @eatruneat ordered the 'Stellina Sprotz'. After trying her drink I immediately regretted ordering wine. Made with DC distiller Don Ciccio & Figli's Amborsia liqueur and a few other ingredients, it was a light, slightly sour orange delight. I looked down the bar and realized that everyone else had one except me. We ordered the Cotto & Funghi pizza and were a little surprised when it came out uncut. Two seconds later a server dropped off pizza cutter, which didn't totally solve the issue. The tray the pizza is served on has a bit of a lip, which makes cutting the crust a challenge. Once cut though, the pie was delicious. The sauce tasted close to Marcella Hazan's tomato sauce with a hint of sweetness and velvety texture and the toppings tasted very authentic. Unfortunately we were time constrained and that was all we were able to try, but will be back to try more and this time I'll get myself a Stellina Sprotz.
  19. Edan Macquaid, long-time pizzaiolo at 2 Amys, is partnering with the owners of 2941 to open a pizzeria in downtown Falls Church. The name is to be determined, and the location is best kept off-the-record for now. This has been in the works for some time, and, at least on paper, has the potential to be one of the most exciting restaurants to open in 2008. Look for Macquaid back in action as a full partner, serving up wood-fired Neopolitan pizza - possibly with DOC status - antipasti, a full selection of beer and wine, possibly a liquor license, an exhibition kitchen, and seating at the bar. Not all details have been resolved, and I don't wish to overstep my bounds, so this is all I feel comfortable saying for now. Congratulations to everyone involved, and we'll see you soon. Cheers!   20. I've lived in McLean for a little over 3 years now, and I keep forgetting this place exists, even tho I'm a regular visitor to Moby's just next door. Anyway, I finally grabbed a takeout menu, and we gave this place a shot...very pleasantly surprised! The menu notes that the pasta is homemade, and i believe them. We got an order of the Ravioli alls Panna, which came with 6 large raviolis (Maggianos large? No, but certainly large enough and homemade!) in a tasty parmesan and cream sauce. By the taste and texture, I think they're not only homemade, but made that day, too. Anyway, really good. We also got the Pollo Francese, which were 3 bread filets in a lemon-oil sauce. Again, I though the portion ample, moist and tasty. My wife thought it was too lemony, but I didn't agree. It also came with a side of spaghetti (you could get salad instead), which was solid. Not the best red sauce I've ever had, but very serviceable and not an embarrassment either (take note Roccos!). We got an order of Fried Zucchini, and it was huge, but didn't travel very well. I think the food was so hot that it continued to steam in its container, so it wasn't very crispy. It's something that needs to be tried at the restaurant for a real evaluation, tho i'm not rue i'd get it for takeout again (it wasn't that bad). Dare I say that there may be a pretty damn good Italian restaurant in McLean...
  21. I could not find a topic for Monterey's Pizza in Alexandria. They just opened a new location about a block away from their old location. They are going to have a patio, they have some inside seating (not huge about 7 tables of various sizes). Beer and wine license coming. We have tried DRP, Lost Dog (our previous favorite), Lena's and Monterey's so far has been our favorite delivery/eat in pizza that we have found so far in the Alexandria/Del Ray area. the crust has nice char, I think the toppings are really good. The staff is really nice, delivery is fast. We have eaten in their new location and while not amazing ambiance wasn't bad, we watched baseball and ate some pizza. I think the sauce is better than Lena's, crust is better than Lost Dog, and I am not sure why exactly, but as a whole I find it better than DRP. Anyway, just my two cents.
