We will be there Scott Johnston +2, I will bring two Haggis and will recite the appropriate verse before we open the beasts up. I will bring my BBQ sauce for any pig that happens to be there, the famous and often used first aid kit and whatever else we manage to throw in the back. In addition, I will have 4-6 bottles of wine from a cellar cull. Msybe my large ice chest as well.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,

Your hurdies like a distant hill,

Your pin wad help to mend a mill

In time o' need,

While thro' your pores the dews distil

Like amber bead.

So, anybody else planning to come? The numbers are a bit lower than last year at this time. If we're going to do a pig, I'll need a decent headcount so I can order by this time next week.

I'll be coming, w/ 3 kids (11 & 14), an out of town guest, & possibly my spouse, so that ups our headcount right there. Still planning on bringing picnic type accoutrements-canopy, camp stove, prep tables, coolers, etc. & food contributions to be determined...Thistle/Linda

Just a couple weeks away! Here's what things look like:

  • leleboo + 2 (pickled shrimp, plates/utensils/supplies of various and sundry kind)
  • GennaroE (caprese three ways)
  • Rovers2000+1 (beer!)
  • Kibbee Nayee +1-4
  • agm + NotQuickDraw (roast pig)
  • Soup +3 (vegan black beans and rice)
  • 22209+1
  • StarStraf +1
  • laniloa
  • Antonio Burrell (tentative) (ribs, smoked brisket)
  • TheMatt (ham balls?)
  • KMango
  • DanielK +2 (soccer stuff, water)
  • ktmoomau +1 (wine, water, dessert, small grill)
  • goldenticket +1 (water, food TBD)
  • chaofun + jchao (lumpia, various sauces, homemade marshmallows/grahams)
  • thistle (+3-5) (canopy, stove, cooler, water)
  • rkduggins +1
  • porcupine + MrP (tentative) (homemade marshmallows)
  • ol_ironstomach
  • zoramargolis +1
  • Koolpaw +1 (slaw, drinks)
  • lperry +1 (cake)
  • Scott Johnston +2 (haggis, sauces for pork, much wine)
  • goodeats +1 (dessert, more)

We actually seem to be a little heavy on dessert from what people have mentioned, although there's a lot of food still TBD ... I'm thinking the next round involves some good hors d'oeuvres/finger-food ideas! And no need to worry about ingredients -- I have materials to label items so if anyone is allergic or on a special diet, never fear.

Also please don't forget the wine and beer, or, as Jake just said, JPW will take matters into his own hands.:D

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010. Noon to 6 p.m.

Ladies and gentlemen,
start your ovens!

Please keep in mind the following items you might have on hand to contribute:

  • A deep-fryer and portable grills sure do come in handy.
  • Coolers, water and ice are useful. Juice and soda for kids as well. Also, consider bringing a bottle of wine (nothing fancy required!) or a six-pack of beer along with your dish.
  • Folding chairs are always a good idea. There are picnic tables set up under the pavillion, but chairs are nice if you want to eat under the trees.
  • I have some supplies left from the last picnic that I will bring, although more plates/napkins/utensils are always welcome.
  • We will have a basic first aid kit; extra sunscreen, insect repellant, band-aids, antibacterial hand gel, and aspirin can be nice to have around.
  • Cameras are fine too - just no face shots on the internet without permission (see thread on Cameras for Food Porn if you like ) .

Just a reminder to new folks that if for some reason you don't want to be listed publicly, that it's possible to PM the organizer & let her know. She can add you to the total without posting your name.

Thanks for the reminder, Heather! I think I had that in an earlier post and had accidentally deleted it from follow-ups. I will happily keep people on the anon list and just add to the head count, so PM away!

Hmm. Looking at the big list, I might change my dish. There seems to be an abundance of meat and a not-abundance of non-meat dishes. Maybe I'll bring a salad or the like.

ETA: I was just given a mini-muffin pan. Seeing that has made me think of those wee cheesecakes that I often enjoyed at picnics and potlucks. And can you really have enough sweets?

Ohhh boy. Weather like today's makes me hope for a repeat next Sunday. I've been pulling a double workload at the office; I cannot wait to cut loose next week.

Quick picnic update. Please join! Remember, you don't even have to cook anything. Bring some beer and wine, or grab your favorite cheeses and a great baguette, and come on out to the park. There will be plenty of food and fun for all!

It also looks like we have a bunch of cooking appliances coming -- in bold below -- so you can create à la minute if you like. .

(Also remember you can PM me and ask to be counted, but kept anonymous.)

  • leleboo + 2 (pickled shrimp, roasted artichoke salad, plates/utensils/supplies of various and sundry kind)
  • GennaroE (caprese three ways)
  • Rovers2000+1 (beer!)
  • Kibbee Nayee +1-4
  • agm + NotQuickDraw (roast pig -- and maybe deep fryer?)
  • durwoodx +1 (beer and wine, propane stove)
  • 22209+1
  • StarStraf +1
  • laniloa
  • Antonio Burrell (tentative) (ribs, smoked brisket)
  • TheMatt (mini-cheesecakes)
  • KMango
  • DanielK +2 (soccer stuff, water)
  • ktmoomau +1 (wine, water, dessert, small grill)
  • goldenticket +1 (water, food TBD)

This time, I'm aiming for something historical. And hopefully not hysterical.

If you're still sitting on the fence, the DR picnic is a great excuse to relax and hang out with the faces behind the screen names. Newbies welcome! And fer cryin' out loud, it's a picnic, not a cooking competition; feel free to bring a bag of Doritos, if that's what you like to bring to picnics.

RSVPs here are appreciated, so we can get a better idea of what supplies and seating will be needed. One week to go...

Awesome -- I'm thrilled about all the DR.commers planning to come out on Sunday!

Since we're less than a week away, it would be a big help if the undecided cooks amongst us could start to tell me (PM is fine if you want it to be anonymous) what you're planning to bring -- even if you aren't fully committed, a vague idea would be great! Remember that we should have a camp stove/grill, a fryer, and maybe another grill or two, but if you plan to use them for your dish, that's definitely a great thing to let me know ahead of time.

Now to start to watch the weather reports...

I'm bringing black bean/corn/tomato salad, pound cake, & I'm still considering pork bbq (yes, I know agm is roasting a pig, but can you have too much pork?) & fixings for pork sandwiches-bread, cheese, spreads-muffuletta & spicy mayo. I'll be bringing the stove w/ grill box, but won't be cooking on it, prefer to leave it open for anyone who wants to cook onsite...also, a cooler w/ water, soda, & beer...

Count me in!!

And luckily, my husband Kamau is in town this week, visiting me from Florida. This is twice in a row now that the picnic fell on a weekend that he was in town. What lucky ducks are we!!!!

I will bring a vegetarian pasta salad (for all the non-pig eaters.).. ...and of course my Dr.com T-shirt circa 2006. (So excited that I will get to wear it again!!) Can't wait to see you all again!!

Count me in for a magnum of 2000 Nigl Riesling Piri Privat.

Also someone should bring some pommes frites. Why? Cuz fries like a Nigl !

Newcomers, please join us! But please don't just show up without signing up first (it's free)!

You can chime in here (or PM leleboo) and let us know what you'll be bringing.

Cheers,

Rocks.

We will be packing for a month and a half trip to Italy... if we can we'd love to stop by. We can bring wine and I'll make some kind of appetizer, since that seems to be needed. I've never been to one of your events and really hope that we can make it. I'll know by Saturday if I've got stuff under control and can escape for a few hours...

grazie!

Lynn

Now to start to watch the weather reports...

This is probably a good time to remind everybody that the picnic will go on rain or shine. The sheltered area is very large, and we'll all easily fit underneath, so the only thing to worry about will be the short walk from your car to the shelter. The food will be cooked and served, the company will be great - don't miss out just because of a few drops.

As it looks like we will have more than enough people to put away a keg, I have ordered a barrel of Bell's Oberon for the picnic :D .

There is one small issue. Since I had to order the keg from Wagners (in DC) I have to pick it up on Saturday afternoon/evening. This presents a problem as I have to figure out how to keep this thing cool until the picnic Sunday in a relatively small condo. So, is there anyone (either closer to the picnic site or in DC) that has room where they could store this in a cold place? I would really owe you one. Worst case, I will deal with the death stares my GF will probably be sending my way when I put it in the tub Saturday night on ice

Spring Picnic. I would go with May 30. Spring breezes. Green fields. Smoky bacon. Tasty red wine.

MMM...bacon and red wine. Count me tentatively in. When and if I am sure to attend I will follow up with what tasty treat I can bring.

More finger foods and appetizers would be great -- and if you're short on time, you can't go wrong with a cheese tray. We're looking strong on the veggie salads and sides. We'll have a fryer, stove, and grill -- ribs, anyone?

And -- where's the bacon?

And -- where's the bacon?

It also seems that "hunks of protein" (steak, roast, fried chicken, pork tenderloin, poached salmon, lobster thermidor, etc.) are invariably gone at the end of the picnic, so I don't think we can have too many meat courses.

Put me down as confirmed on a berry trifle of some variation of berries I acquire, instead of pie. I just saw a very good looking picture of one and it put me in the mood to eat trifle.

<XTC> We're always making plans...for Trifle.

For variety/controversy/challenge, sign me up for something XTreme vegetarian (raw & vegan).

bacon something or other.............maybe bacon crusted fried chicken????

"My God, it's full of stars!"

All that's left is to put bacon under the skin and over the skin. Sort of an in vivo reverse Double Down. (ETA: Well, I suppose ex vivo and probably not that vivo at the time.)
