Joe H
Could it be that there will be a Sonny Bryan's in the DC area? Key words in the link, Steve. are "franchise development program." It would be interesting to compare Sonny Bryan's on Inwood avenue to Arthur Bryant's on Brooklyn. Really, really interesting. But At\rthur Bryant has it's own disappointing outposts so if Sonny Bryant's opens in K. C. (or here) it may not have a lot in common with the Inwood avenue original. Or, for Arthur Bryant's, the Brooklynavenue original in K. C. The names of both of these are worth a lot; that value is what leads to franchising. Unfortunately, as even outposts in their own cities have shown, the franchised resetaurant may not have a lot in common with the original. FWIW Gates in Vegas does not necessarily taste like Gates in K. C. Garduno's in Vegas does not taste anything at all like Garduno's in Albuquerque (and Garduno's in Albuquerque is nowhere near Albuquerque's best...)...If Sonny Bryan's or Arthur Bryant's opened here I would not be particularly excited. Still, O'Brien's here, in the '70's and early '80's was a special place. Absent the ambience (which IS worth a lot) the food was a clone of Inwood avenue. I have no belief that any franchised Arthur Bryant’s will taste any better than the original than I believe that the Bangles cover of “A Hazy Shade of Winter” could ever be as good as Simon and Garfunkel’s. The original Arthur Bryant's was a treasure. Years ago a stop at an Arthur Bryant's outpost in a Kansas City casino was a very bad joke.
Adam23
Quick weekend in KC. Jack Stack - Wonderful brisket. Tender, smokey, wonderful. Dry ribs and burnt ends. If you want brisket, this is excellent, and the place is nicely decorated. Oklahoma Joes - Wife had a very nice smoke salmon salad. I had burnt ends. Still amazing. Salt, crispy, tender, fatty, so good. Roscoe's - Found this mentioned on a few places. Located in Edwardsville, KS about 20 min from KC downtown. If you like ribs, you absolutely must stop here. Probably the best ribs I have ever had. Smokey, tender, fall off the bone and a wonderful sweet and spicy sauce. So good. Much better than the other ribs I had on this trip. So good. And the sides are excellent - perfect BBQ beans and delicious cole slaw. Highly recommend this place.
StarStraf
Going thru some old post, Kansas City is where I'm from and Jack Stack is the first place we schedule when we are going to be in town. Next on the list is Stroud's Fried Chicken and then Minskey's pizza (which is more for nostalgia then for taste) FYI My friend Keith maintains a website of Kansas tourism here is the restaurant page. http://www.kansastravel.org/kansasrestaurants.htm
Al the Pal
Given how people in KC seem to argue over the best bbq places, I'm guessing many are probably excellent for different things. We tried LCs which I loved. We did carry out as the dining room is pretty small and was full. Highly recommend the burnt end and the ribs. The spicy green beans are fried and crispy. Sort of like some sort of vegetable crack. Really addictive. The french fries were disappointing but came with the platters we ordered. Skip the fries and just go for the string beans. It was fun to see the meat in the smoker which is behind the counter.
