tenunda Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 If you're politically inclined, the DC chapter of Drinking Liberally will be meeting at M&O's tomorrow night (Thursday) from 6:30 to 8:30. Just wanted to let you all know.
Heather Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 John Wabeck at Firefly says he will bring out some sparkling wines for Friday's wine happy hour if we can get a small group together to help drink them. Is anyone game? We'll already be there for an early dinner.

JPW Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 John Wabeck at Firefly says he will bring out some sparkling wines for Friday's wine happy hour if we can get a small group together to help drink them. Is anyone game? I have a probability = .75 (75% chance) of showing up at Firefly for happy hour tonight. If I do make it, there will likely be a brief cameo appearance from a special guest star.
shogun Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 I may or may not be able to get there tonight...might try and get in for a quick one. *mumbles something about being caught off guard and telling his boss he'd help him move tonight*
Jacques Gastreaux Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 I'm still good to go for about a 6:00 arrival at Firefly for some bubbles.
JPW Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 Barring rebellious youth, I should be there about 6:30. I need a drink. Badly.
DonRocks Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 Barring rebellious youth, I should be there about 6:30. I need a drink. Badly. Nobody "needs" a drink he says, swirling his tumbler.
JPW Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 Nobody "needs" a drinkhe says, swirling his tumbler. All right then -- my co-workers need me to have a drink before I ... you get the idea
CrescentFresh Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 I'm still good to go for about a 6:00 arrival at Firefly for some bubbles. Derek and Chef were kind enough to uncork a few of the sparklers by the glass for our dinner last night. With the starters we had glasses of Luxe, which according to said management is: Chateau Ste. Michelle, spends 11 months in new French barrels and 5 years on the lees (current vintage is 1998). Straw-colored, dry, crisp, definitely tasty, but perhaps a bit to sharp for my oh-so-particular palate. With the entrees we had glasses of Cerdon de Bugey, a blend of Poulsard and Gamay. This was a hit. Pinker, sweeter, but not overly so. Great flavor, very well-balanced, slightly yeasty to make it fun. We enjoyed this one a lot. We probably would have sought out another bubbly for dessert....but we opted for the liquid desserts...and I don't know if it would have been easy to pair one with a sauternes, a grand marnier and a Madeira. If you're going tonight, enjoy them. I'll have to catch them on a differently bubbly Firefly Friday as I will instead be feasting happily at Corduroy.
bookluvingbabe Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 I'm going to try to stop in at Firefly around 5:30 for a quick spring roll before they disappear from the menu....
Stretch Posted June 19, 2005 Posted June 19, 2005 (edited) Got my Father's Day treat early yesterday in the form of a night on the town sans baby and better half. Met a friend at Oya, which is extremely cool, both literally (despite the fireplaces) and figuratively, and extremely expensive if you drink the (very good) cocktails. Sadly, they don't serve from the main menu at the bar and the bar menu is limited to sushi, so we broke for Poste and pounded a couple of Wagyu tartares and Delirium Tremens instead. Next stop was supposed to be Andale, but the bar was full, so we wandered over to Signatures, which didn't have that particular problem, for a baked mac n' cheese and a little vino. This led to a discussion about bar menus in general and bar menu value propositions in particular. Which led to a brisk walk up to Corduroy -- where we saw the Shorters dining royally and were very kindly welcomed with an impromptu, and delicious, scallop tartare. This was followed in short order by spring rolls, softshell sandwiches and a superbly beefy flatiron steak. Sadly, the house Margaux and the boring company had by this time begun to tell on my friend, who had to be decanted into a cab and sent on his way, clutching to his chest the doggy bag of shame. Being made of stupider stuff, I cleared my head with a long shamble across town to Firefly, where Derek immediately fogged it again by forcing a couple of coconut caipirinhas down my neck. Based on the available phenomenological evidence this morning, they put quite a lot of cachaca in those bad boys. After that, just the usual -- Johnny's Half Shell, Sette, BdC, forcible ejection*, yadda yadda yadda and this morning I got a food processor from the kid and a box of Raisinets from the dog. Fatherhood rules. (*Inserted for dramatic effect. May not be a representation of actual events. Celebrity voices impersonated.) Edited June 19, 2005 by Stretch
Nadya Posted June 20, 2005 Posted June 20, 2005 It is Monday. Will. Be. Dining. At. Palena. Tonight. I'll be with one with a busty blonde. (Though, obviously, not her.)
Al Dente Posted June 20, 2005 Posted June 20, 2005 I'll be with one with a busty blonde. (Though, obviously, not her.) I think what you meant to say was "I'll be one with a busty blonde". Right?
Nadya Posted June 20, 2005 Posted June 20, 2005 I think what you meant to say was "I'll be one with a busty blonde". Right? I stand corrected - I will indeed be THE one with a busty blonde. What can I say. It's Monday morning...no one can have weekends like that and not pay for it in some manner. My English, not so good.
laniloa Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Jacques Gastreaux, mdt and I will be meeting at Eve tomorrow at 12:15 for the lickety-split lunch deal if anyone would like to join us.

FunnyJohn Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 I've scheduled my daughter and me for our semi-annual dental appointment tomorrow. I don't think she would enjoy grabbing anything at the Grill, but I plan to take her somewhere for lunch -- Mendocino likely -- before depositing her for some work at Mom's office downtown. Anyone up for HH someplace?-- I may just go back to Firefly for a bubbly start to the weekend.
Jacques Gastreaux Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 So, who all is headed over to the Galileo lunch grill today? I plan on heading over early enough so that I can beat the crowd.
shogun Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 I might go, though I doubt I can get there too early. Tend to catch it near the end. I'm kind of thinking Couscous Cafe.
CrescentFresh Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 Anyone up for HH someplace?-- I may just go back to Firefly for a bubbly start to the weekend. This has potential.
mdt Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 This has potential. I was planning on hitting FF after work today. Is the bubbly going to be flowing tonight?
CrescentFresh Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 I was planning on hitting FF after work today. Is the bubbly going to be flowing tonight? Unsure. Do you think we'll be okay if it's not, though? Johnny?
John Wabeck Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 Unsure. Do you think we'll be okay if it's not, though? Johnny? We're sorting it out now.
Heather Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 I may schlep down for HH. I will be alone with bored kids all day tomorrow while Scott is off on the battlefiled somewhere in Northern Maryland.
Stretch Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 Scott is off on the battlefield somewhere in Northern Maryland. Man, I had no idea the insurgents had been making such inroads. Maybe this thing is in its last throes after all.
Jacques Gastreaux Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 Man, I had no idea the insurgents had been making such inroads. Maybe this thing is in its last throes after all. When they get a little further south, we can take them down to Archibald's for the evening. That should put an end to it once and for all. They will think that they martyred themselves and are in paradise.

Jacques Gastreaux Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 Mere coincidence that Archibald's owner is Dan Harris? I think not. I'm dying to know how you know this.

Next time both our guys head off into history, lets meet for our own HH!
DanielK Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 I just posted this over in the Palena topic, so excuse the cross-post. I'm meeting a friend at the Uptown at 6:30pm on Monday, so I thought I'd swing by Palena first and try the much adored chicken. I've eaten in the dining room, but never the bar before. Anyone want to join in?
Jacques Gastreaux Posted June 29, 2005 Posted June 29, 2005 Is anyone up for happy hour Friday evening? I was thinking perhaps Bistro Lepic wine bar. Does anyone know if they have any happy hour specials? But I'm open to other suggestions (Circle Bistro?).

Al Dente Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 Stopped by tonight with a friend. Unfortunately for all the Jeff fans out there, I was told that he moved back to Colorado Big bummer. Anyway, the chicken was definitely back on the menu, but a lot of the plates people have been talking about weren't (i.e. fish fry, charcuterie plate, hot dog). However, I had an excellent "mixed grill" of duck sausage, rabbit and squab. My friend had the penne with lamb meatballs which still taste divine. I think you were sitting right next to my and my buddy at the bar. You were over on the right hand side of the bar, right? New bartender. Her take on the Palena Manhattan was a little sweeter than usual, but still quite good. And a mean Negroni was had too. No food for us tonight as we ate at 2 Amy's.
ustreetguy Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 Yes - that was me! I was the one in the blue shirt and red tie. Which two were you? hillvalley Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 You never know who you are going to end up sitting next to at the bar Palena
ustreetguy Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 You never know who you are going to end up sitting next to at the bar Palena No kidding! I need to make more of an effort to find out if there are fellow Rockwellians around next time I'm out!
Al Dente Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 Yes - that was me! I was the one in the blue shirt and red tie. Which two were you? The two guys sitting right next to your blonde friend. We left while you were still there. We should have some sort of secret gesture to perform every 5 mins or so to announce ourselves to other folks who are "in the know". Vigorous nose-picking is probably not a good one, huh?

I was kind of thinking about Hank's myself. Or how about BdC?
FunnyJohn Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 Come on G-Town isn't that far! I was kind of thinking about Hank's myself. Or how about BdC? As always, I will bend to the will of "the people" and can get to practically anywhere (not Old Town). Does Hank's have an actual bar? Does Lepic's bar have a good wine-by-the-glass selection? BdC is someplace I have not visited for a long-time -- maybe time to renew my acquaintance Here's a thought: why not meet at BdC and then migrate to Hank's? Latecomers can just mosey on over to Hank's or call one of us to track our location. (PM me for my cell if you don't think you will arrive at BdC before 7)

Any other suggestions?
Jacques Gastreaux Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 I would prefer someplace inside with effective A/C. Also, if we wind up someplace near DuPont, would anyone be interested in hitting Sala Thai?
CrescentFresh Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 I would prefer someplace inside with effective A/C. Bar at Cashions?
FunnyJohn Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 Outside tomorrow evening not a good idea -- heavy downpour expected. Where is the Dupont Sala Thai and why sould we go there? The one in Arlington is mediocre.
squidsdc Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 Since I've not been to the FF HH yet, if I can get out early tomorrow I may just hop over there. Anywhere else would have to be close to my office downtown, so I probably won't be seeing any DR.com-ers. So have a safe and happy July 4th!
shogun Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 Anybody know of a Montgomery County liquor store near a Metro? I've had a neat lesson in how good their sales are (Milagro Anejo tequila, $50 in Virginia, $23.00 on sale in MD) and want to take advantage.
Jacques Gastreaux Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 Outside tomorrow evening not a good idea -- heavy downpour expected. Where is the Dupont Sala Thai and why sould we go there? The one in Arlington is mediocre. The Sala Thai on P between 20th and 21st seemed really good when I had lunch there yesterday. The consensus seems to be that the DuPont location is superior to the others. It's cheap, good, and located close to at least one of our favorite HH hangouts.

Jacques Gastreaux Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 So, it looks like Firefly for wined down HH Austrian bubbles. Who all is "in?" And who is interested in walking up the street to Sala Thai for some supper (weather permitting)?

mdt Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 I will be at Firefly, but not certain about dinner. I am thinking of heading up to CK or Hank's.

Jacques Gastreaux Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 On the strength of your opinion that this Sala Thai is above par, I would like to have some Thai food. See you at FF beforehand. Actually, my opinion of Sala Thai is that it is "below" par. Heather Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 Tuesday the 12th is my birthday, and we're celebrating at Marcel's. I have got to try that boudin blanc.
hillvalley Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 Given that it is summer and we should take advantage of the weather a group of us decided that it would be nice to do a different sort of Happy Hour. We thought that going to see The Wizard of Oz at Wolf Trap might be a nice, family friendly change of pace. There is something about sitting out under the stars, eating good food and of course drinking good wine while watching a classic movie accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra that sounds like a good way to end the week. The performance is Friday, July 29th at 8:30. If you would like to join us drop me an email and buy some tickets. We can coordinate food and wine later.
Woodleygrrl Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 I think that we should all go to a National's game and do a tasting of the various dogs and beers offered at the Bobby. Tickets are only 7 clams for the nosebleeds.
dcfoodie Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 Heading to Dino tonight for dinner. Anyone else planning to be there?
Barbara Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 I think that we should all go to a National's game and do a tasting of the various dogs and beers offered at the Bobby.Tickets are only 7 clams for the nosebleeds. Having tasted some of the "food" at RFK and, since you are allowed to bring your own food from the outside, I think an outing to see the Nats would be a good idea provided that the participants bring in food from elsewhere. Anybody in this crowd could come up with something much, much better than what is available there, whether homemade or bought. The facilities there are just too lacking to be able to provide anything remotely edible. Let's not discuss the prices for the dreck, either.
Heather Posted July 7, 2005 Posted July 7, 2005 I gotta agree with Barbara. I think a tasting of Italian sandwiches, or Banh Mi, or whatever would be in order at a Nats game.
crackers Posted July 7, 2005 Posted July 7, 2005 Having tasted some of the "food" at RFK and, since you are allowed to bring your own food from the outside, I think an outing to see the Nats would be a good idea provided that the participants bring in food from elsewhere. The facilities there are just too lacking to be able to provide anything remotely edible. Let's not discuss the prices for the dreck, either. I think RFK Stadium bans anything but bottled water to be brought in, and they do search bags. Anybody tried it? Please, oh please let me be wrong because Barbara is right... the so-called food and beer is total crap - which is probably why so many people tailgate before the games.
CrescentFresh Posted July 7, 2005 Posted July 7, 2005 (edited) I can say with certainty that you can bring in bottled water and food to the game. No coolers, though. Permissable bag sizes are listed on the Nats website. When I'm in a dog mood, I usually get them from the vendors outside. Although the premium price you pay inside RFK does give a bit of insurance regarding sanitation as far as I'm concerned. Bottled water inside is $4. Outside is $2. But if you get it outside, check the cap carefully. Maybe I'm silly paranoid but I swear that some of the vendors collect empty bottles post-game, fill them with tap water, and resell the next day. My only evidence to this is twice getting bottles outside and when I open them inside, the plastic "safety tabs" were not in one piece. Peanuts outdoors are $3. Less if you buy them at CVS! All this said, lunch on Monday was dogs, peanuts, water and Miller. Dinner on Tuesday was dogs, peanuts, water and Miller. Dinner tonight was dogs, peanuts, water and Miller. Lunch tomorrow will be....... Pork shoulder sandwich with broccoli rabe, provolone and green sauce, peanuts, water and Miller. Let's go Mets! Edited July 7, 2005 by CrescentFresh
