On a whim, what are you up to?

It's my birthday, so wherever we go needs to have good cocktails.

Well, 2 Amys is near Cafe Deluxe, which I know to have good cocktails.

Whoa, hold on there. You're talking crazy. You're suggesting somewhere other than Firefly or Corduroy? :P

You actually thinking of showing up?

Parking near 2 Amy's sucks ventworm nut.

First, Happy Birthday! Second, you might want to try parking in the Giant lot behind 2Amys. There are usually spots there.

What about Hanks? Although it's tough to do HH without a bar.

We're still thinking of Firefly - I'd suggest Dino but mdt was just there last night.

Posted
Yeah, aren't you on your honeymoon or something?  :P

Me and the missus might be up for stopping off at Firefly. Though I am in jeans and a t-shirt-- a swanky designer t-shirt however.

Are newbies welcome to attend? I've never done a DR HH (or any other events), but I would be delighted to kick things off tonight!

Well I guess it looks like FF is the spot for tonight.  See you all there.

Always!!!!

Everyone is always welcome, with or without posting that you are joining in.

We really do need to come up with a secret handshake or password :P

Trouble is recognizing people. I was at Dino last night and I knew mdt was there too, but I had no clue what mdt looked like.

I've actually been contemplating this dilemma ever since our first outing (which was then an eGullet thing). We were all supposed to meet at Firefly and someone claimed that he would grab the round table in the bar in the window. Unfortunately some non-eGullet people got there first and were subjected to several people asking them some incomprehensible questions.

My solution is this: whenever Rockwellians agree to meet wherever, they should raise their glasses every 15 minutes or so with a toast "TO ROCKS." That oughta do it.

Nah, "ROCKS ROCKS!" Hoo-Rah optional.

I've updated my avatar so that it shows a picture of mdt so everyone will now know what he looks like.

Thanks. That clears things up a lot for me. :P

In the event you're trying to identify Jacques...

Mr Gastreaux

I fully realize I'm leaving myself wide open to similar posts... :P

Muahaha. Do you suppose in the unlikely event I can show up for any on-a-whim gatherings, I should skip around the lounge on one foot, wrapped in my egullet avatar pretzelwoman pose? Muahaha.

There has been some back-channel talk of doing happy hour at Dino's this Friday. Is there anyone else who might be interested?

edited to add: And someone already has figured out who the picture is of in my new avatar. The winner will be disclosed at Galileo on the 24th.

Sounds like a plan...

Since the bar is small and some of us will want to grab a bite, I have made a reservation for Friday night at 7pm. PM or email me if you would like to join us. JG will take care of any folks who are now shows. :P

I'm planning to meet a couple of old buddies at Palena on Wednesday after work. We may head over to check out Dino after cocktails. If anyone can't wait til Friday...

The Happy Hour deals, particularly the wine(s) by the glass are a good deal + the HH bar food.  On Fridays they are usually slammed, but the HH deals are available on any night.  Tuesdays HH lasts 'til 10 pm!

Woo hoo!

Posted

And Tuesdays are the WORST day of the workweek for me -- I always need some form of libation after 5 p.m. on Tues. Anyone up for a drink (next week)? :P

I'll be going into debt at Oya tonight (just drinks, not food). Suggestion of a friend who has a gift certificate or something.

If any of you fine folks are in the vicinity, feel free to say hello. I'm wearing an orange top and black skirt.

No Marcel's for us.

Sadly, a $600 car repair pre-empts our plans tomorrow.  Sigh.

Oh no!! Well hope you are having a good one (birthday that is) today anyway.

Happy Birthday!

Heading to Palena tonight with a co-worker who doesn't get out much. I took him to 2Amys a while back (which he was crazy about) and then we had a cocktail at Palena where his mouth watered over the menu despite us being stuffed with pizzas, prosciutto, and various other Pastan treats.

I may have to spring for a multi-course meal.

What time? I'm going to meet up with some friends there as soon as the door opens, but we will probably head over to check out Dinos after six.

Not sure yet. Work could hold me up for a while. I have a feeling we'll either get there earlyish (5?) or latish (8?). If the former, I'll look out for you. Who knows, I might check out Dino's myself.

We're flying to la belle France tomorrow, where we'll stay in Alsace and eat at L'Arnsbourg! (Mich 3*, not that that means anything anymore :P

What's with all the little bottles of expensive water? I always see the door guard supervisor with a little mini of Voss, and somebody else had a small little Fiji. How much must those things cost!

I'm off to Taverna Cretekou in Old Town tonight for dinner with my sister. It's been a few years since I've been, but I seem to recall they do a decent job of it. I could really go for some lamb!

Edited to inquire: Was this site down this morning or has my employer finally caught on to the fact that I spend more time surfing the web than working?

My thoughts and fears exactly. (I think Don was cleaning up some off-topic crap to which I, unfortunately, also contributed. :P )

Thought our reservations were for 7:00.

I can't stay for that. I'm in on the early side and hanging for a little wine and a nibble and saying hi to whoever stops by.....those I know and those who recognize me from my avatar.

Refresh my recollection regarding parking.  The restrictions on the main part of Conn. Ave go off at 6:30.  But you can park before then in the metered spaces on the parallel side street?

You are correct.

Posted
Porter St on the West side of Conn. Ave. usually has spots if you are willing to walk a little bit.

You are a very optimistic person :P Friday nights tend to be bad because of Shabbat.

A couple of warnings about the 6:30 parking on Connecticut. My friend parked right across the street from Dino at 6:25 and had a ticket when she came back to her car that night. Also, the 6:30 spots go very quickly, especially on a Friday. Get there at 6:40 and you may be SOL. Have fun and someone bring a fire extinguisher for Justin

I say someone should get there early and confiscate the entire bar for us...

I can make every effort to do this. I will leave something at each barstool and, with the several outfits I bring along, constantly excuse myself to go change in the rest room so it looks like there are several people there.

On second thought, it might be easier to save parking spaces.

I'll be leaving my office before 5:30 and can help assert squatters rights.

Yesterday, had a craving for softshells. Today, even more so. Will be at Corduroy's bar to satisfy craving around 6-6:30. Thanks Mr. Yalcin for the info.

Is it 6 PM yet?

Oh, how I wish I'd known! I have been working like the proverbial pooch and am in desperate need of something to look forward to -- would anyone care to attempt DG next Tuesday? That would be 7 projects from now, if anyone cares... :P

This unmoderated, unedited thread can be used by anyone and everyone who wants to get together for dinner, meet for a drink after work, rabblerouse, cavort and just enjoy the pleasures of each others company.

Feel free to post here as often as you'd like!

An outing is in the works for a dim sum pleasure trip to the Golden Palace in Glen Burnie near Baltimore this Sunday, at 11 AM. (finished in plenty of time to drive to DC for dinner at, say, Galileo.) It will be some rockwellians and some chowhounds who ('tis true) coexist in peace and harmony. Golden Palace is located at 5721 Ritchie Highway, just north of Glen Burnie, inside the Baltimore Beltway. Here is the approximate location Golden Palace

I'm told there are four types of dim sum carts: plain kitchen carts for the desserts and other cold dishes; the usual heated carts; a cart with a built-in griddle for heating and crisping things; and a cart with deep wells for congee and flavorings (this cart also holds the duck feet and the chicken feet.)

Here's what has been written before: "The place opens at 11 AM on Sunday, and by noon is filled, mostly with Chinese families. Standouts included the very suckable ribs with black beans, the sesame balls filled with bean paste, the steamed 'fun gor' (mashed beef, shrimp and peanuts in baby flesh), and what was described as "chicken from round the ribs", and was the essence of chickeny chicken. The strangest thing was 'mai tai goh' described as water chestnut cake. It was slabs of not too sweet yellow jello with shards of water chestnut, sauteed on the griddle in front of us! Worth a try. . . . There were also good off -menu items at other tables"

If you are interested in coming, PM or email me and I will pass the word along (it's not expensive, so I think the plan is to just split the check.)

I'll be at Corduroy's bar at 6:30 :P With Hannah and Mr Hannah (not sure what your dr.com handle is) enjoying scallops and white burgundy before heading to the 9:30 Club. Perhaps we will see some familiar faces.

Peanut and her mom have taken pity on me and proferred me a pass on parenting this pm.

I will most likely be found at the same place as the two "H"s at about the same time.

Need that steak.

I have a symposium to attend (What...that's what the eVite said!) on the second floor of Thai Place this evening at 7. I was planning to hit Circle Bistro for a glass or two of wine prior to that, if anybody wants to come.

Posted

I'm supposed to meet a friend from out of town and some of his friends for guacamole, margaritas and ventworm nuts (do those come boiled or dry-roasted?) at 10PM (or after the Nats game, whichever comes first). So I need to kill some time somewhere and soemthing to tide me over until all that deliciousness later in the evening.

I may have to tag along at Corduroy myself.

Spring rolls, scallops, steak. It's all good. It doesn't even have to start with an S.

I can't seem to locate HillValley's note about the upcoming outing to WolfTrap...

Next Friday, the 29th, my favorite movie of all time Wizard of Oz is being shown in the ampitheater with the National Symphony Orchestra offering musical accompaniment. Throw in a couple bottles of wine, some cheese & meat as complements, and some people who aren't too hard to be around, seems like the perfect Friday night outing (even if it isn't so "on a whim"). Who's in?

Posted
I've never been there for a happy hour.  Any specials?

They have a couple of items (spring rolls and something else) for $4 a plate until 7pm.

Posted

I can vouch for their willingness to accomodate large groups of people at the bar for happy hour (and many hours after happy hour)

When I changed jobs a few months back a large crowd of us descended on Corduroy for drinks (lots of em) and snacks - we were treated splendidly throughout and my only hope is that we didn't get too rowdy :P

we`ll take care of you , come on over people

Is anyone whimming tonight?

What restaurant in DC has the most powerful air conditioner?

It wasn't Corduroy on Friday night. Maybe it was the heat from all the candles being burned at the convention?

Someplace subterranian is good on a HOT day. I bet Citronelle stays pretty cool.
