Pat
From the NY Times, an article on the problem of salmonella contamination in imported spices. The article focuses on India and Mexico. Another thing I never thought about that I can now worry over...
lperry
Maybe there isn't a large problem in India itself because the spices are typically roasted in a pan or fried in oil. Ack. My pepper mill. If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go cook some peppercorns... Edited to add, lest people think me paranoid, I am currently friends or family with people on chemo and one who is pregnant. Spices are now going to be cooked before anyone gets fed.

If it makes you feel any better, it's apparently a longstanding problem but one that is difficult to diagnose and trace back to spices.

That doesn't make me feel any better at all.
Fishinnards
Almost all my spices probably come from India. But aside from black pepper on European food, I can't think of any other instance where I use spices raw. I too may be toasting my peppercorns before they go into the pepper mill.
