You're in luck: Old Europe has an asparagus festival each spring that runs for several weeks, and it may be starting right about now. This reminds me that it has been two years since I've last visited, and it's time for that to change.

Cheers,

Rocks.

Never eaten there but Cafe Berlin on the Hill (Senate side on Mass Ave.) always has an Asparagus menu in the spring.  There was also some white asparagus on sale at Eastern market, think it was $5.99 pound.

The best thing about Cafe Berlin is sitting outside on a day like today and drinking a huge beer. The food? Not bad, but definitely not good either.

Bistro Europa on King St in Old Town usually does an asparagus special or two this time of the year. They make a mean wiener schnitzel and some of the other dishes can be decent.

Spargelfest is going on at Old Europe right now through May. Here is a link to the special menu.

And? And??

Last year I stopped in a field just outside of Karlsruhe and ate raw sweet, white asparagus just meters from the farm stand where I bought it. In four weeks or so I will be back at the same farm stand... In Heidelberg, in Koln, throughout much of Germany the late Spring is dedicated to some of the most flavorful spargel that I have ever tasted. I only wish people reading this could know just how good asparagus can taste! Honestly, I have not found any asparagus in America to equal such a simple German pleasure. The analogy would be sweet white corn which, at its best, is exquisitely delicious. The back road in Karlsruhe might be similar to a back road outside of Cambridge. With pasteurized country butter we are talking one of life's greatest pleasures!
