DonRocks
Sorry to break protocol, but a friend is in from Los Angeles with her husband and child, and the child needs an Infectious Disease specialist. They're staying in NW DC. I don't have an answer - can anyone help? (This is time-sensitive; I'll move the thread when we're finished.) Her son was sick after finals and got a typhoid vaccination; now he's tanking. Does anyone have a number of someone to call?

lperry
Do take him to the ER. Also be aware that feeling like hell warmed over after the typhoid vaccine is very common, so panic later if necessary.
DonRocks
Addendum: he's 21. Also, someone wrote me said his sister is a physician in Philadelphia, and recommended Hopkins. Yes, the (God-)mother isn't panicking because she heard the same thing about the typhoid vaccination, but he's apparently very ill. (She's monitoring this thread, so I'm typing all the info into here - thanks everyone: You're great!)
dwt
If in NW DC, check with Georgetown (202-444-0086) or Washington Hospital Center (202-877-3627). Those are the numbers for the infectious disease department. Otherwise, head to the ER/Urgent care center at either location. Hopkins in Baltimore is great if you have something really interesting from a clinical research perspective. If you prefer the Hopkins system over Medstar, then check with Sibley. lperry
If he's got a fever, she should take him in. The worst that can happen is they'll send him home.
lion
Does he have an allergy to eggs or something? That might have been used to prepare the vaccine.
dinoue
I'm confused. Did he get the typhoid vac in response to illness? Vaccines need to be given prior to exposure, after exposure, would likely need antibiotics or an anti viral medication. I would think GW hospital might be the best option due to their fairly reputable school of public health which often has some specialist(s) in tropical disease if typhoid is the illness in question. dinoue
Oh ,and of course Hopkins if they want to go to Baltimore, though they could also go to Sibley which is part of the Hopkins network, though the specialists would likely be in B'more.
Josh
I second the GW ER if they feel he needs to be seen immediately. There is absolutely no reason to drive all the way to Baltimore.

KaraLew
Words cannot express how grateful to all of you and Don we are for your advice and wise counsel. This is truly an amazing community you folks have here. The situation did not improve or degrade this AM, so off to the GW ER we went. Admitted with a very short wait time (perhaps would not have happened after the GW graduation gets started). Currently on an IV and running panels and tests. Will keep you updated and will post on our visits to Foggy Bottom Farmer's Market, Komi, Little Serow, Sweetgreen, Zatinaya, Le Diplomate (with drag bingo at the P Street Whole Foods as an appetizer), Bourbon Steak, and a disaster at Range. Right now, feeling a little sad that I can only fathom a pre-made sandwich from Starbucks across the street. Again, grateful thanks to all of you wonderful people of the DC-area. ~Kara

DonRocks
One word...MONO. Wow. I've been sitting here thinking, probably like everyone else, that he had a reaction from the vaccine. I'm glad you got this taken care of; I'm sorry it happened while you were away from home (mononucleosis information from Mayo Clinic).
