DanCole42
Picked up a bottle of $9.99 ruchét Whole Foods. The $9.99 refers to both the name of the wine (it has a stylized yellow barcode on the label) and the price.Definetely the best wine under $10 I've had in a while, and the only one my wife has ever liked.I know that ruché has only very recently been "discovered" and marketed outside the vicinity of its production (the DOC area for it is only about 100 acres in Piedmont). Is this grape in high demand now? What's the general feeling of it in the wine community?Maybe I misunderstand wine valuation, but it seems to me that something available from only 100 acres of land would be a pricey commodity commanding more than $9.99 a bottle (and yes, even the "$9.99 Ruché" is DOC).Definetely gonna see if I can find some in bulk... dmwine
Michael Downey Selections has imported a ruche for many years, as has another importer in Maryland (Appellation, I believe). There's not enough of them to be popular, beyond the initiated. Your price is indeed low - save some for me! The Downey sells for around $20, I believe, and the other closer to $30. Downey's is better - you can probably find it at Arrowine in VA or Wine Specialist on M Street.

jparrott
I once had a grappa made from ruche that was highly aromatic--like orange and cherry blossoms, and quite soft.
DanCole42
Which Whole Foods would that be?The one on Duke St. in Alexandria. I might call up the importer and see if I can get it direct from them - they're right in Springfield!

Trying to hoodwink distributors, retailers, and the Old Dominion out of their God-given right to take markups and cuts! Wish it were that simple. Sadly, you've gotta go through the normal channels. Sorry... I'm new to this. I've never enjoyed a wine so much I felt the need to purchase several bottles of it!
Gary Tanigawa
Michael Downey Selections has imported a ruche for many years . . . I found the last bottle from a purchase a year ago from Michael Downey Selections/Arrowine (I also recall the price was around $20): Crivelli Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato 2003. It seems to have lost the interesting aroma I remember from last year.

That could be a factor of the vintage - 2003 was incredibly hot and many wines lacked their normal acid levels, making them softer on release but potentially not as age-worthy.
