I'd never heard of The Brooklyn Eagle, much less knew Walt Whitman (!) was its editor for two years, but at one time, it had the largest circulation of any afternoon daily newspaper in the United States.

The Brooklyn Public Library has the entire set of newspapers online - a person could send a lifetime learning about the history of Brooklyn, just by going through these archives.
