The Deli - Independent Sub Shop Competing with Subways in Several Area Locations

Recommended Posts

The Deli has been here for years, located at 480 Elden Street, in the KMart shopping center a few storefronts to the right.  From the time you enter to the time you leave they treat you right.  If you cannot decide from one of their outstanding subs detailed on the menu, ask them to make something for you and they will.  No fuss, not a chain and not franchised.  The bread is fresh, the meats plentiful and made to order within minutes.  There are a few tables to sit at but most take their subs with them.  I have had "the Deli" which is more of your traditional "Italian" sub, their turkey and cheese, meatball and cheese, tuna, chicken salad and they make canollis to order for dessert.

This is one of the no frills, local establishments making their way with the Subways, Jimmy Johns etc all around them.  If you want to support a local business with great food and service, give it a a shot.  Their website is non-existent and they closed their store in Leesburg last year, but still thrive in Herndon and Fairfax.

It's very odd: Their Facebook page says that their website is thedeliva.com, but that website is for a seemingly unrelated deli in Foggy Bottom - it almost looks like it's in The Watergate - and there's really strange information on the website - it's like some sort of template.

Regardless, according to their Facebook page, they've been open since 1979, which puts them on the list of Oldest Restaurants in the Washington, DC Area - does anyone know which location came first?

Pretty sure their Herndon location was the original - this link provided above is NOT the same Deli.  They do not have steakburgers.  It appears another Deli managed to obtain their website and modify for their own location.  There is a location in Fairfax, but the Deli I referenced above does not have a DC location.  Hope this helps.

Update - their Sterling location moved to Lansdowne.  They actually do have a Watergate location, however the menu on the website www.thedeliva.com is mostly correct however, the steakburgers and ribeye referenced are not on the menu.  Sorry for any confusion, the owner is working to correct the issues on their homepage.

You may be the first person in history to ever know this, other than the owners - thanks for rolling up your sleeves and doing some reporting.

If you see the owners, please tell them that they're welcome here.

Last week I was craving a deli sandwich but did not want anything to do with the sandwiches that are served at the client site cafeteria.  Started doing some research and came across this place.  I have gone two times within the last 10 days.  High quality sandwiches.

1. Pastrami, corned beef, coleslaw, cheese and hot peppers (they were buried at the bottom)

2. Turkey and roast beef sandwich with onions, hot peppers, and pickle.
