TrelayneNYC
I moved to San Francisco in August 2015 and let me tell you that the variety and extended growing season in California is miles away from what I was used to in New York. It's been kind of an adventure. Cherry tomatoes are still available although I expect them to be gone soon. Each cantaloupe is the size of your hand. These are small heirloom apples called Wickson apples. They're about double the size of a golf ball, have a tart-sweet flavor and are great for eating out of hand. This weekend we bought: whole chicken, herbs (basil, mint), salad greens, rainbow chard, Italian sweet peppers, Seckel pears, green beans, brussels sprouts, Sun Gold cherry tomatoes and regular cherry tomatoes and heirloom garlic.

TrelayneNYC
This was the scene at 8:30 am. It's like these people have no lives. Don't mind me, that's just my grumbling at having to get up early on a Saturday in order to be able to buy anything worth getting. today: herbs (basil, rosemary, Italian parsley), tomatoes, stinging nettles, chicken, cheeses (mozzarella, Parmigiano-Reggiano, ricotta), strawberries, romano beans, Walla Walla onions, salad greens (mesclun, spinach, watercress), zucchini, summer squash. I think I might be forgetting a few additional things...
TrelayneNYC
today, we bought quite a bit for T-day cooking: beets, heirloom tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, butternut squash, potatoes, onions, herbs (basil, oregano, rosemary, sage), Romano beans, Meyer lemons, celery, ricotta cheese, heavy cream, unsalted butter. Our T-day celebrations are decidedly not traditional. I think regular T-day (with turkey, green beans, cranberry sauce, etc.) is fucking boring but if it works for other people, more for them! Personally, I'd rather starve. I ate that type of food when I was growing up and when I left home, I decided to make my own traditions and be with my family of choice so I wouldn't have to be reminded of where I came from. On Monday, B will pick up a brisket which we had pre-ordered a few weeks ago.
TrelayneNYC
One of these days, I will be brave and buy some cardi instead of ogling them with my camera. Unfortunately, they're a royal PITA to prep. today - Oro blanco grapefruits (they're the ones pictured above; a cross between a pomelo and a grapefruit that's not as bitter and twice as sweet), mesclun, spinach, tatsoi, FRESH BAY LEAVES!!!, carrots, cauliflower, Meyer lemons, salmon then we went inside the Ferry Building and bought some oxtails, pistachios, canned tomatoes, onion and garlic. And sweet peppers.
TrelayneNYC
Today we bought: Oroblanco grapefruits, kumquats, curly-headed endive, potatoes, purple-white turnips, cauliflower and scallions. Then we went inside the Ferry Building and saw No, we didn't buy any. On the other hand, we got some veal shoulder (for Saturday dinner) and pecorino cheese.
