Ginger, Pan-Asian Developed by MGM Chefs at the MGM National Harbor

Recommended Posts

On this chilly snowy Saturday morning, I made my inaugural visit to the MGM casino in National Harbor.  The blackjack dealers are mostly shitshows - slow, unable to follow normal procedures.

I went to Ginger, because the online menu looked interesting.  Yes, I would've loved to try their Sampan spicy Dungeness crab but not at $88 per order.  Ginger looks nice, but it's just the pan-Asian restaurant that every casino has to cater to their Asian clients.  The premium is completely not justified based on their food.  Oily Vietnamese spring rolls, overcooked and flavorless shrimp wontons in a mediocre broth, and underseasoned dim sum spareribs.   But which casino restaurant isn't overpriced?

On an old Bourdain episode he went to a strip mall Chinese place that serves the billionaire whales who fly in to play at the casinos -- but want a humble, well cooked $12 meal after raking in chips. I wonder what that equivalent would be for those who would come in to gamble. A limo ride to Rockville for A&J?

The one in Annandale would be much closer, but that sounds about right!

Went to Ginger for an office lunch. Horrible. $26 for a smallish plate of seafood drunken noodles. Absolutely no spiciness to it at all. I'm glad I just ordered water because those who ordered iced tea or a soda noticed they were $5 when the bill arrived. $5. For iced tea/soda. At least there were free refills for that $5.

MGM and National Harbor must combine for the worst collection of restaurants in a small geographic area.

ETA: Oh, and they refused to do individual checks. They scanned cards separately by the amounts we told them to put on each card, but wouldn't give each person a separate check.
