The Kreeger Museum: Private Art Museum in a Historic Former Residence (2401 Foxhall Road, NW Washington DC)

With the partial government shutdown and the Smithsonian Institute + National Gallery of Art now closed (they both had some residual funding which allowed them to stay open until the New Year...but alas no more), we should highlight some other art museums around town.

The Kreeger Museum is a smaller, private art museum residing at the former residence of David and Carmen Kreeger, with 5 acres of sculpture gardens.  Designed by renowned architect Philip Johnson, it is among the few examples of his work in DC. The Kreeger's focus on 19th and 20th century paintings is evidenced by works of Monet, Picasso, Renoir, Cezanne, Chagall, Miro, and Stella. Also included in the permanent collection are works of prominent Washington artists and outstanding examples of traditional African and Asian art.

The Kreeger recently completed a reinstallation of their permanent collection, so now is a great time to visit. 

Tuesdays to Saturdays: 10 am to 4 pm
Closed Sundays and Mondays.
Closed all federal holidays.

Students/Seniors/Military: $8
Members and a guest: Free

Docent Tours

Tuesday to Friday: 10:30 am and 1:30 pm
Saturdays: 10:30 am, noon, and 2:00 pm

Mount Vernon is an independently owned non-profit and run by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association and is not a government museum, open 365 days a year 9am-4pm daily. Also, the grounds are dog friendly.

If you have kids, the Kreeger has some nice gardens with sculptures so if it's a nice day, and you have kids, they can run. I went to Kreeger with a 4&7 yr old and didn't feel like they were about to break anything or get kicked out. Worth a go.

Our find this weekend was College Park Maryland's airport museum. Two small kids play areas inside. WASP and African American exhibits and old plane and plane parts.

We've been to the College Park Aviation Museum a couple of times. My daughter's pre-school does field trips there as well. It's cheap and great! Like @NolaCaine said, theres a kids' play area. Kids can also climb into a couple of old planes. The College Park Airport, which per Wikipedia is the world's oldest continuously operated airport, is right outside the huge back windows, and you can sometimes see small planes taking off and landing. We've combined trips to the museum with lunch at Yia Yia's Kitchen in nearby Beltsville.

As we told our kids, we went to "Party Chicken". Doesn't look like much, does not have a website, but damn, that Salvadorian food was amazing. (menu link below)
